Great times & great people...... Sydney has never been the same after that, For generations the showground was like holy ground.I miss it every Saturday. Thanks for posting...

So fitting that Rush in the legendary yellow and red Berco colours scored that final win! I was one of many who on the night scraped up Showground dirt as a keepsake. Actually, I took the (temporary) sign home home too...) Lee

As a kid in the 60's I lived for Saturday night at the Showground, the rest of the week was irrelevant! Solo's, Sidecars and my beloved Speedcars. Those were the day's my freind.

Things change in life, Sydney Showground's time to move on arrived sad as it was but great Speedway moved on to new venues and while the Showground is no more the memories live on every time a race car fires up on the clay . I am reminded every day of those two final nights April 20 and 27th 1996 with framed signed programs by Garry Rush.Much treasured .

Garry Rush was the only one competing at the Showground that night in 1996 who had actually raced there during its 'Golden Era' of the 60s and 70s

I used to do demolition derby's here back in the late 70s and one night driving out onto the track i caught one of the gates in my rear bumper and ripped it off its hinges.

I don't think that there will ever be another speedway venue as the Showground. If only a dedicated arena was built somewhere in or near Sydney to re-create a 1/3 mile dirt track & named Sydney Speedway Royale, a very good professional promoter, public relations with the media, sponcerships & the like could draw much needed entertainment for bored Sydneysiders who want Motorsports on a Saturday night. There's nothing for sportsminded public for the Summer months except cricket. Please post this.
