Cheers Steve. I was there with my late father the night Rushy won one of the back to the Royale nights. Will always remember it. Wish I got to see Dad race there.

Jason Parker - I was also there on the very last night, in 1996, when Gary Rush won that last ever race at the "Sydney Royal". I cried like a baby on the walk home (I lived then, as now, in Redfern) and I also still have an old Jam jar full of Sydney Showground Speedway dirt. It was jusst such a sad night, and knowing that the old so-and-so, Rupert Murdoch was to get his filthy hands on it, was cold comfort indeed!! I really hope those people in the US that are sue his so-called "News" channel, Fox News, take him "to the cleaners". Right wack, I say.!!

Guys, I came over from England just for the final two nights at THE Sydney Showground in 96. I had kind of had an ambition from being a teenager to go to Australia to watch the solos at all the tracks with magical names - the Showground, the Ekka, Claremont and Rowley Park. By 1981 I had saved enough to do a two-month backpack out there, and got to the Perth and Brisbane tracks. Sadly, I was two years too late for Rowley, but went to Speedway Park, Murray Bridge and Mildura. The Showground had stopped running regular meetings by then of course, but had been due to stage an Australia v New Zealand Test match one Saturday night in February - but it had to be cancelled due to the Aussie final at the Ekka being rained off and restaged on what would have been the Test match night. Before the Australasian final at Liverpool, I spent an afternoon at the Showground and walked the track but thought I would never see racing there, until I heard about the final two nights and knew I just had to be there! It put me in debt with the bank for a few years but it was worth every pound and penny, and I too scooped up a load of shale after the final night and have it here in a glass jar at home in Manchester, England! Great memories to last a lifetime.

It could have been still running at the showground at Homebush, if the government hadn't sold out to the AFL. I was gutted that ex-pat Victorians were more important to the NSW government than the people of Sydney. I'm sure I went to see solos run at Homebush and I remember it being a great day. I know it's not Moore park, but it would have worked and built up it's own history. Sadly Speedway Motorcycles are mostly dead in Sydney, unless they invested in Nepean.

@@SteveMagr You have worked hard on this, and it shows. I was there on that very last night, and I will always fondly remember Gary Rush winning the last Midget feature at the old "Royal." I still have the little plastic bag of "sacred dirt," and I fully intend to be burried with that, and the other one I have from P.C.R. MY God, do I miss the old place, I certainly hope that the yippies and Rupert Murdoch got what THEY wanted out of US, cause it'll be more than they'll ever know .... R.I.P Sydney Showground Speedway. Never forget!!
