@baremetalHW I'm old but I'm new. I love your My Mechanics vibe. Your resto's are absolute Masters level learning. Question.. you mention a few times that making them too perfect makes the car stand out as restored, especially to collectors. Is your goal to create a car that convincingly avoids a collectors scrutiny or do you add value by owning the fact that it's a quality resto? As an art teacher, I find myself wanting imperfections as a way to make each car non-fungible, so I would want to know it was restored and enjoy the craftsmanship of the artist(you). To me, a fan of the sublime nature of vintage and not a value chaser, I appreciate you not overworking yet completely revitalizing a sliver of my childhood.
@baremetalHW3 жыл бұрын
You nailed it... Can I restore a car that can fool a pro collector...that's my goal. Mirror polished cars are great for KZbin videos but aren't fooling anyone. My video "back catalog" is full of them and they are sort of boring to make at this point. Now I break out a microscope and compare zinc crystal structure and try to match it... try and age the paint... try and reproduce toning... it's so much more fun and rewarding than "the perfect paint job". Nothing wrong with seeking perfection in art... it's just that perfection for me is creating a restoration that would not stand out if it was sitting next to the real thing.

Man I missed these videos. Funny that you always mention not going "too far" with how perfect you try to make the car but a single dedicated video of doing just that might satisfy the masses. Can't wait for the next one.
@dsihacker013 жыл бұрын
For the "they were originally never perfect so don't make it perfect" point, to really drive it home, you should make a video of you making one normally, and one "as perfect as possible". Maybe even do a video where you take a modern casting and make it look as close as possible to a restored car in your collection to show how far mattel has come
@maxduro3 жыл бұрын
Hi and thank you for these beautiful restoration videos! I am in a bind myself with a restoration project and I thought maybe you (or someone on this thread) could give me a pointer or two. I am restoring an old toy almost entirely made of cast iron parts. I have stripped and cleaned the metal to bare but for the love of everything, I can not find a primer that sticks to the surface. I tried Vallejo acrylic primers and they peel like there is no tomorrow. I tried MrHobby's metal primer and again no luck, after leaving it alone for days to cure properly, the next layer of paint or primer just comes off. I do not have the plating setup available and maybe neither the inclination to invest in a new one just for this project. I was wondering if you have any suggestions?
@mercoid3 жыл бұрын
What, if any, cleaning agent did you use on the surface prior to priming? I’d go with a strong de-greaser and a Scotch pad followed by a clean rag and denatured alcohol. I also find it helpful to submurge the spray can in hot tap water for several minutes just prior to priming and painting. I frequently restore all manner of things (when necessary! …Patina / original finish destroyed enough to devalue), and have noticed that sometimes old cast iron can tend to have an almost “waxy” feeling surface that is quite resistant to paint.
@maxduro3 жыл бұрын
@@mercoid thank you for the reply! I think I have cleaned the surfaces well enough. I washed them with dish soap first, then sanded up to 600 grit, and before applying any primer, I further cleaned with methylated spirits. also used an airbrush to spray the Vallejo Primer, instead, I applied the metal primer from my hobby with a brush. Maybe should I try with an automotive primer filler? an etcher primer? I am afraid I might lose detail using any of these.
@baremetalHW3 жыл бұрын
Cast iron is very close to graphite (nothing sticks to graphite).. it is extremely high in carbon content... if you drill it or machine it it just turns to black carbon-like powder. Different cast iron has different amounts of carbon... if the parts you have have a really high carbon content you will never get paint to stick to it because it just sheds a atom thick layer of the carbon... try powder coating the part instead of painting ( a strange coincidence as it's the last video I did lol)... it is stronger than paint and will not flake/peel off.
@maxduro3 жыл бұрын
