I think every artist has a true love/hate relationship with the place they grew up and my guess is that this song is paying homage to both love and hate. ‪@AnnenMayKantereit‬ made this song feel like an anthem of Cologne. This song painted a beautiful picture of the flaw in escapism and I loved it.

Ok ähm wir wollen jetzt ein neues Lied spielen Okay um now we want to play a new song Und ähm bevor wir das machen And uhm before we do that Wollen wir aber erst was anderes machen We want to do some thing else Weil äm wie soll ich das sagen- so scheiße das klingt- das klingt immer so Because uhm how do I put it- as shitty as it sounds- it sounds like Vom Bordstein zur Skyline. Aber wir haben ja einfach mit Strassenmusik angefangen From the gutter to the skyline… But that’s what we did. We started with street music Und sechs/ sieben Jahre später spielen wir einfach vor 17,000 Leuten. And six/seven years later we just simply play in front of 17,000 people. Vielen vielen lieben Dank! Lots and lots of heart felt thanks! They cheer Und weil das so geil is, machen wir jetzt was, was wir noch nie gemacht haben And because that’s so awesome we are now doing something we haven’t done before ever Wir würden jetzt nämlich gerne einmal mit euch anstoßen We want to cling our glasses with you. Habt ihr was zu trinken? Do you have drinks? NEIN NO Nein… ok wir haben hier nur vier Kölsch, das können wir aufteilen No… ok we have only four Kölsch, we can share that with you ( that’s absurd but even more funny when you know that Kölsch beer is made fun of in Germany because it’s served in these tiny glasses) Und Schnaps And schnapps Schnaps, oh. Henning raises his glass: Prost Cheers 🍻 PROOOOOST Fakes drunk talking: Also wir reden jetzt schon noch so weiter So you know , we are talking like this, now Ok das Ding is, dass mein Mikrofon Ständer nicht ganz fest ist The thing is: my microphone isn’t stable Warte ich helf kurz Wait I help real fast ( they repeat that in an old man’s voice from Cologne) Wo ist der denn kaputt?- hier unten! Ah ja jetzt fest- jetzt hält es oder? Where is it kaput? Down here. Ah yes now fixed. Now it’s stable, is it? Das Lied heißt Tommi The song is called Tommi

Germans are "local patriots" , and the citizens of Cologne/Koeln/Koelle are among the most patriotic. The city really stands out. Is characterized by three big Cs: Catholic-carnival-cathedral . They have a vivid music scene. In the early 80s the band BAP managed to sell tons of records singing in dialect. Which average Germans didn't understand at all and had to use the booklet

@@u.z.9383 And as average Germans we sang along nonetheless. Because somehow we felt it. Verdamp lang her! And with this song, it makes me emotional for them but also almost regret that I’m not part of such a strong huge community that is just being from Cologne. The soccer club FC Köln might be a big connecting thing for them, too.

When the crowd starts cheering so much, he had changed to the Cologne regional dialect! And after hearing this song it makes so much sense that they drank the "Kölsch" beer before the song started.

I come from Cologne and this city has its own culture, is very diverse, open-minded, cheerful and many people travel to see the world or move to another city for work, like MAK (Berlin). But when we have children, we want them to grow up in exactly this culture.

The song is very much an hommage to their hometown Cologne. Two of them live in Berlin nowadays (Henning and Severin), Christopher still lives in Cologne as far as I know. They associate being home with standing at the Rhine :) and seeing the Spree reminds them of that when they are in Berlin. Also the chorus is sung in the Cologne dialect, that's why the audience cheered so much when first hearing it. In Germany we have a proverb (I'm not sure if you use it as well in English) "Viele Wege führen nach Rom" (many roads lead to Rome), meaning there are a lot of different ways to reach your goals. Sometimes it is used as "All roads lead to Rome" (because Rome was the most important political centre in Europe for a long time ) and as they are so fond of their hometown they converted that into All roads lead to Rome and eventually back to Cologne. Also as someone else has already explained, the line "damit die Kinder, die wir kriegen können, alle in Kölle geboren sind" means so that the children we might have in the future will all be born in Cologne. So they will move back home before having families so that their children will also have that connection to Cologne :) Also I don't think they associate moving back home with some kind of failure or defeat, at least I as a German personally don't hear that in their text. But maybe I'm wrong.

a few things Cologne is just the english name for whats actually called Köln so no, you don't need to pronounce cologne different A nice detail non-german speakers wouldn't pick up is that the song is not performed in high german(the accent created so all germans can understand eachother) but rather in a slight Kölsch(Cologne accent) The lyric of "so that the children we can have are all born in Cologne" was actually fairly accurate. He is not talking about definitely having children someday. He is saying that they should all one day move back to Cologne so that if any of them ever have children, those children will grow up in cologne just like them. I think you feeling like the songs subject is half meant to be a defeat is a cultural thing. Our country is not continent sized and Cologne is in a place you could reach within a day of driving or slightly more no matter where in germany you'd be, so there is not as much distance to your home city as when moving around in the US or Canada for example. Also many germans have alot of pride in the states, cultural areas, cities and in extreme cases even districts of cities they are from, so moving back to your home when you are growing old is seen as a life goal rather than defeat by many.
@walterooski
@walterooski 4 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for that clarification! I love learning about the cultural differences so hearing the perspective of those that understand what I don't goes a long way. That's why I wanted to make sure to say that it could be my cultural interpretation because I couldn't say for sure one way or the other, I really appreciate that explanation!

You get it exactly right :D He is basically singing about moving out into the open and missing home and wants to come back one day to meets his friends and all of em togetehr have their childs in their hometown and watch em grow up there. From my personal understanding its also like a homage to their story. Like growing up in Columbia, South Carolina then making music and exploring the big life and being in Los Angeles then, but in your midn you always wanne go home and eat that nice BBQ from SC, hear the crickets and smell the rain and see your friends. :D Best regards from Germany

More suggestions for other AMK songs: "Lass es kreisen" - a post quarantine song and very fun. It's not that deep of a song but a great starter for any show and Henning's lyrics are still very nice :) "Weißhausstraße" - one of their darker songs with incredible lyrics that read like a poem. It's not a well known song but maybe my favourite of their latest album. "Weiße Wand" - if you want something more experimental. It's the first song AMK ever made that is a social critique. The title "White Wall" is a metaphor for a few things I think. "Alle Fragen" is a song about coming back home after a long time and feeling like something is off. That one hits me every time.

you really need to listen to their beginnings when they were still street musicians. there are a few videos of them on youtube. They were probably only 17/18 years old and they were already conveying these feelings back then. There's a great video where a little baby runs up to them and Henning rewrites the lyrics of the song live and sings to the child.

This song makes me cry each time I listen to it!!! They are all from Cologne, where I was born aswell. They grew up there, played music in the streets and became famous. Then they wanted to explore the world and moved to Berlin (the capital of Germany). Now they are getting homesick and thinking about gowing back to Cologne to settle down and have their children growing up in their town, that they love so much. People from Cologne ususally have a very strong bond and connection to this city (just like me) so that's why that crowd (they are playing this song at a concert in Cologne) gets so emotional. Because everybody has Cologne in their heart and wants their own children to also grow up in this town.

I'm german and I don't hear any kind of "defeat" in this song. They sing about how much they love and miss the city and how great their childhood there was. That's why they all want to come back if they'll have kids so that they grow up there and have the same awesome childhood. I'm not sure where AMK is living currently but they surely have to travel a lot with being on tour and recording in different studios and so on so I guess that's where the homesickness sets in. Sure they're also singing about wanting to see the world and explore it but they never left to "get out of this boring town" they left because they were curious and from the lyrics it sound like it was always the plan to come back to start a family there. I'm from nothern germany and moved back to the village where I grew up a few years ago and even though its a few hundered kilometers from Köln (Cologne) this song always gets me emotional because I feel the same deep connection to the place where I was raised and I'm just not the same when I'm not here.

It a song of the love to Cologne. Cologne is very special, ans so are the people. Cologne is not only a city, COLOGNE IS A FEELING As the Band "Höhner" sings in their song " Hey Kölle" But if you don't live here, you'll never know what this city means to their people. And our language (Kölsch - same as our beer) and our football club (1.FC Köln) melts all the people together. I love this city so much ♥

I kinda disagree with you on the whole the song feeling partially like a defeat thing. I’m not from cologne but from rather close by and a lot of people who grow up here (me included) actually have a very deep seated connection to their home with the rhine kind of being the symbol to represent said home. As far as I know AMK very honestly and openly love cologne. They started out as a band playing on the streets of cologne, they probably have their biggest fan base their and they regularly do special stuff there as well. Also fun fact that I learned about yesterday: AMK actually played on the Bundestag (our house of parliament) before, when they were still in school. A band made up of different politicians played a concert there and since another politicians son or nephew went to school with them that politician instigated that AMK open for that band of politicians.

The Rhine is the river going through Cologne, while the Spree is the river going through Berlin. Many cities identify very much with their rivers, I assume like New York and the Hudson. In Hamburg die Elbe, in München die Isar, in Köln der Rhein und in Berlin die Spree. Please don't ask, why some rivers are male, most are female. There are many tales about Vater Rhein (father Rhine).

This song is a homage to the older Cologne song from Bläck Fööss (nacked feet) written in 1978: "Ich han nen Deckel". The song tells the story of a friend of the band moving to Berlin for work and writing home a letter to tell them how much he misses Cologne. And noch AMK is writing the other side of the story, as they moved from Cologne to Berlin themself. There is even a version of the song on the 50Years LP sung by Henning. check it out, when you have time for it ;)

Kölsch is my home dialect. The line “Die Kinder, die m’r bekomme könne, in Kölle geboren sind” - means: “so that the kids we are able to conceive are born in Cologne”. Cologne has a rich music scene which sings a lot in the regional dialect. Most people of Cologne are very bound to their roots, albeit Cologne is very open-minded and world facing. I am always in tears, when I hear songs like this. This dialect is near to the Dutch language. One of more famous “Cologne” songs is “Et jitt kein Wood” of Cat Balou. “Et jitt kein Wood”, would be “es gibt kein Word” in standard german, translates to “There is no word”. The song evolves around the idea, that there is word for the feeling of missing Cologne.
