Hi there! I am Joseph.
I have been an expat living in central Portugal along with my beautiful girlfriend Mariana for six years now.
Together Mariana, my father Clinton and myself, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food!
In this episode we welcome you to join us in mid Spring time as we are given a tour around our dear friends farm house, which is for sale, in a rural mountain village in central Portugal.
We start the virtual tour by introducing ourselves as we explain the location of this wonderful gem of a farm and a little about the surroundings and local amenities.
We begin by walking up the long private shingle track, which gives fantastic access to the farm. Then we step onto the property itself, the first thing we see as we look around is Buddy the dog, barking away at us, his owner left him chained up whilst we did the filming so that he would not pester us. There is a large farm house of maybe 130 - 150m2 sitting on the driveway and a large garage, a chicken coop and ample patio area.
As we scoot around Buddy and make our way towards the front of the house Mariana spots a pig sty and a pigeon loft. This farm really is a perfect little Portuguese self sufficient smallholding. The owners here were able to produce a large amount of food for their family and it really shows how much effort they have put in over the years.
We discuss the vineyards on the farm and I hazard a guess that around 300 litres of red wine can be produced here. We then walk past a large natural swimming pool type irrigation tank, I would drain this down, clean it all up and line the tank to make it a nice plunge pool to escape that summers heat.
We walk down the track to the very bottom of the farm, North side, this takes us to a large stone well and a stream that borders the property. The stream and well have lots of water throughout the year and give more than enough water to constantly keep the 1.5 hectare of pasture land luscious and green, should an irrigation system be used. This will keep your livestock in nice green grass all year round.
Upon walking back up the track we spot a nice large vegetable garden with a strawberry patch, potatoes, onions, garlic, cabbage and spinach. We pass by the beautiful stone cottage once more and make our way to the final natural water source, the large 30 / 40m long fishing pond that exists on the farm. I would definitely plant this pond with water lilies and bull rushes, which would give a lovely natural bio filtration to the water, then add maybe some largemouth bass or carp. This would be where I would spend most of my summer afternoons with a good book and a fishing rod.
Once we had looked around everything we stood in the vineyard summed up our visit and Mariana and I decided it was just about lunchtime so we should head back to our farm.
Once back at our farm I took my little wicker basket, my gloves (which are needed for the next job, for sure!) and my trusty pocket knife. I foraged some lovely stinging nettles, perfect time of year to pick stinging nettles in spring as they are fresh young plants and have not developed the chemicals which can upset the kidneys yet. I also gathered a couple of pennyworts from our wall in front of the farm house to use as a garnish.
Back inside the farmhouse I laid all the ingredients out and explained what they all were, some nice Tuscan sausages, stinging nettles, pennyworts, some veggies and a nice dollop of double cream. Then I set to showing you all my very season soup of nettle and sausage. A yearly favourite of mine when the spring comes round.
At the end of the day I took a stroll up to our olive grove with Mitzy, Lilly and Tiger, my three strays and we discussed this week on the farm. It has been a bit of a hectic week for me as I have been busy doing cherry preparation work in the orchards of my own farm and that of my elderly neighbours. So lots of weed whacking and such what.
Thank you so much for watching and I hope you all have a marvellous week.
See our journey to self sufficiency / permaculture / organic farming living in Portugal, trying to produce as much of our own food planting vegetables, growing fruit trees as well as looking after all our animals, such as our chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, quail, rabbits and sheep - Shortly pigs too!
- Growing vegetables, raising meat and foraging on our cherry farm in Portugal’s Beira baixa, Fundão

Love your tour of the property. If I was younger i might have bought a quinta here in portugal. But now my small patio garden is quite ample. Particularly as i have generous neighbors. Love your recipies. You are the only "video" chef i have ever paid attention to and used the recipies. So nice to see cooking and eating as pleasurable not competetive. Muito obrigado

Hello Joseph, interesting soup with sausage.. Had to look up what stinging nettles is in Afrikaans. Remember them from childhood days but our gardens do not have them anymore as all strive for low maintenance gardens.. a pity as there is enormous loss of "friendly gardens " for honey bees and butterflies. Warm regards from CT

yet another amazing and inspiring video. i just have to say that i follow quite a few youtube channels, and without hesitation, you have the best channel on youtube. i see other channels with a million subscribers, or one hundred thousand, and the quality, love, and care you put into each video deserves 5 million subscribers. your editing style, personality, and content is deserving of a show that i could easily see on our american public broadcasting channel, pbs. i went to college for television production and marketing in chicago. you do compositions and editing that many people are unable to understand after five to ten years, or even a lifetime of education. please don't change anything! i love how you hold your edits, leaving the camera at times to simply stay on a shot for fifteen to twenty seconds instead of five. we used to have an icon of american television that did a weekly show so very similar to yours and by the time his career ended, everyone in america loved him. his name was charles kuralt. i'm ramblin on, but i just wanted you to know how much joy you are bringing to people.

@Farmerforfun
@Farmerforfun 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Paul! Not really in our area, I am a magnet for mosquitoes and I do not get affected here in Portugal. No idea why though, maybe it is the altitude, maybe the fact that most water sources are running or have fish to eat up the mozzies. Either way it is not too bad!

Hi Jillian! Oh gosh it isn't very often at all. You get Thursdays and Sundays after new years, because this is hunting season and when a lot of people are off work, so they get together and hunt, but it very much depends on where you are living, there aren't just hunters walking around shooting constantly, its regulated. Honestly, I saw more hunters where I lived in the UK, those fox hunters used to pass our house all the time
