@@Anthyrion I don't think Goku never noticed rather, he could see the potential Gohan had for accessing greater power than even he could fathom. He knew that Gohan, deep down" understood power more than anyone at the time even himself and that was a crushing shock to everyone including the viewer. It's true, Gohan doesn't like fighting, never has, but unfortunately his life had to be about it to survive and protect the ones he loves. His doubts always got in the way of his own potential strength. Gohan during the HBTC training arc (and almost every other arc) consistently doubted his own ability not thinking at all that his dad was always proud of him. It was THEN you can see that Goku confirmed that Gohan unknowingly had what it takes to surpass even a pure-blooded Super Saiyan like he and Vegeta. Goku is a lot smarter and fatherly than people give him credit for. He DOES know his own son but the lesson here is, the WANT or NEED to be stronger isn't as straight forward for everyone. We all have our own views on strength and Gohan's view of it is defiantly different than Goku's.

To all the fathers out there rewatching this again, the emotion between Goku and Gohan, "go out there and win this one for me" hits deep in the heart. I have 2 sons, 15 and 11, and every day I'm in their corner boosting them up to be better and more successful than me in every way. My 15 yr old is already taking college level courses through an advanced curriculum and is an absolute wiz with any computer, machine, or electronic, like a male Bulma. Everyday I look at him with so much pride just like Goku does with Gohan and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

Gohan turns out to be 11 yrs old here although in the Japanese version I believe he was 12, Goku in this episode explains how his son has always had an innate ability to be extremely powerful in moments where things seemed hopeless like you and your lady have seen with Raditz, Frieza and other moments as well. Goku being the only one doing intensive training with his son in the chamber really gave him time to really know his son on a closer level, so it makes sense that he would be the only one to truly understand the depths of his son’s power. 😉

So it must have been Goku's plan all along to use Gohan's hidden power against cell. I can only imagine he hit a plateau and knew it was not enough to beat cell. It seems he gave it everything he had because he's stronger than Vegeta. We can question Goku's naivety, but I think this was a tough decision and one that he made in the time chamber. Now that he made the decision he has no choice but to follow through with it. I think that explains how calm he is. The turmoil of making such a decision was probably dealt with in the time chamber and we're just not seeing it. Many people are like that in real life as well. Once they make a decision, it's quite straightforward to deal with the consequences. And how many other options did he have to save the planet when everyone was counting on him?

To clarify, the confusion the journalists had after Goku named Gohan, saying something about taking a break and goign to eat is because Gohan literally means "cooked meal" in Japanese. So that is a translation thing. The confusion of the journalists makes more sense in Japanese.

There were a few lines of dialogue that was cut from the DVD & Blu ray releases. When Gohan is powering up & the camera cuts to Piccolo, Trunks, 16, & Vegeta, and their thoughts say something along the lines of: He has... More power... Than I ever... Thought was possible! I think it may have only been available on the Cartoon Network airing & VHS releases. Such a great bit of dialogue that shows how powerful Gohan is.

There is a pun in Japanese in this episode. Gohan sounds like "meal". So when Goku says it's Gohan's turn, it sounds like it's meal time. That's why the reporter thinks he wants to eat.

One of those DBZ theory type channels I watched a long time ago said that Goku giving Cell a Senzu Bean was actually the right idea, otherwise, Cell would probably just get pissed, power up to full and decimate Gohan (or something like that). By being fresh, he can feel in control enough to have sport with Gohan before shit really hits the fan.

That's exactly the point, and it annoys me that so many people don't get it and still call this "Goku's dumbest moment". People who call it a stupid decision somehow managed to piss the entire plot of the fight. Gohan couldn't have beaten Cell; all of them working together couldn't have beaten Cell if he just went all out (nevermind the possibility that he's just blow up the planet the moment they violated his rules). Even if he's stronger than Goku, he's NOT Goku. Look at the way he performs against Cell when Cell is fresh compared to how Goku did; and Goku's weaker. Even exhausted, Cell would be more than a match for Gohan, because Gohan is green. And without the senzu bean, Cell wouldn't have taken any of the risks he does to pull more power out of Gohan; the moment he realized that Gohan was a threat, he'd simply have killed them. Then Goku. Then everyone else. Beating Cell was all or nothing. The senzu bean had nothing to do with making the fight "fair". It was about forcing Gohan's back against the wall.

Cell was even willing to let him do so. Cell was not in trouble after his fight with Goku. You don't appreciate how strong Cell actually is. Cell is SO strong that he was still confident he could beat SSJ2 Gohan after seeing Gohan speed blitz the Cell Jrs and kill them in one blow; the only way that could be true is if Cell could have dispatched the Cell Jrs. just as easily: otherwise he would have been crapping himself when he saw Gohan do it. Cell only used a portion of his power against Goku. He had a lot of power to spare. And he didn't even need to use much of it against Gohan pre-SSJ2, because of Gohan's lack of control and experience. I really wish there was still a version to watch where it shows when everyone had shocked faces, they spoke inwardly too about Gohans power. In that version, Trunks is first and he says 'This is incredible' and then cuts to Piccolo 'G-Gohan! He's...he's...!' Then to Android 16 'He is far more powerful...' then lastly to Vegeta who almost finishes what everyone else was gonna say with '...than I ever thought possible!' I remember watching that version when it first came out on TV. I wish they kept that inner dialogue.

Gohan is 10-years-old during the Cell Games, but due to his physical aging in the Room of Spirit & Time, he is physically 11. Gohan was born on May 18th, Age 757. The Cell Games takes place on May 26th, Age 767. One day in the Room of Spirit & Time is one year, physically. Gohan is a 10-year-old in an 11-year-old's body, basically. His birthday was like a week earlier though so he might as well still be 9, but the literal answer is... Gohan is 10. These are facts based on the math presented in the official material presented and cataloged in the Daizenshuu books and the Kanzenshuu website. Also, PS: I read the dates wrong when double-checking this so my math got screwed up. It's fixed. Whoops.

One important thing people keep missing is that Cell will fight Gohan with his increased spd which Goku couldnt keep up with (more obvious in the manga) and he wouldnt be able to even hit Gohan until he uses his true spd. Thats how much stronger/faster Gohan was than Goku. Its at least 25% gap which is the edge of rival gap.

One thing I notice in this episode and when you finally realize at the end is goku was just being modest. He def was just as strong as Gohan if not stronger. Let's be honest the whole time in the chamber he was training even when gohan was sleeping he was training. The fact some people still really think goku wasn't strong enough to beat cell is kinda mind boggling. The main thing that sets this theory up is when goku says he won't be around forever so he wanted gohan to step up and be the new hero. He was basically passing the torch so to speak. Occasionally Goku can be quite a bit smarter than he normally appears. In order for his plan for Gohan to work, Cell had to be able to really back Gohan into a corner. Cell had to put him in a position where he had no other option, but to release his power. The Senzu bean guaranteed that Cell would be more than capable of playing his part in Goku's plan. Regardless of how crazy it appeared, Cell was never going to beat Gohan. The way they trained leading up to the fight, and Gohan's enormous potential... Cell wasn't even in his league.

This arc shows how smart Goku is when it comes to fighting. He's recognised Gohan's latent potential when they trained in HBTC and was the only one to notice Gohan actually surpassing him in power. By meeting Cell in his final form via teleportation he was actually assessing his power compared to Gohan and within seconds that meeting lasted he already knew that if Gohan fights 100%, Cell has no chance. Hence Goku's further calm and happy attitude. After all, while no dad would openly admit it to his kid (don't want to raise a narcissist now, don't we?), having that kid surpass him in any way is the ultimate pride and joy.

I disagree with this. The problem was Gohan didn’t know how to control the power and it released involuntary when he or other people are in distress. Goku overestimated this and was relying on this ability to beat Cell. As Piccolo said “Gohan is not a fighter and is not thinking about strength or competition”. Goku was wrong about his son and miscalculated pretty bad. If wasn’t for Gohan realizing why his father was picking him to fight and him telling Cell about it Cell would have never pushed him into awakening it and probably would have just killed him.

9:58 In the manga, Gohan is only 9 at this point, maybe 10 due to the Time Chamber. In the anime, he's 11; one extra year due to the Time Chamber and another year from his birthday that he and his family celebrate in a filler episode.

Madison's got a point. Gohan fighting Cell is kind of a WTF moment. He's 11 in this episode. He was 9 before entering the Time Chamber, subsequently turned 10 during his time in the Time chamber, and his birthday wasn't long after he got out of the Time Chamber, thus turning 11.

Actually gohans latent strength comes from the fact that he’s a hybrid saiyan. He is more emotional/human than pure blooded saiyans, and is able to draw out power when these emotions pile up. For goku, even after everything frieza did, it took frieza actually killing krillin to push him to ssj. While for gohan the hurt and anger from his friends being beaten up and him not being able to do anything built up to the point where he was tearing up, and 16s speech was just enough to push him over his self doubt. Makes it that much more awesome.

@@DefonationIt's not that he can't, he didn't have a transformation on the level of Gohans, but I'm pretty sure in the kakarot game they show an unseen arc where trunks goes ssj2 against the buu of his timeline. Also in the cell saga I guess he already had his moments like his ssj transformation and the whole fight with cell. Imo trunks isn't really as emotional as Gohan, at least not anymore as an adult. If trunks was Gohans age and put in the same situation than I think he would've gone ssj2 as well.

Also, I think there's just something missing in the dub. In Japanese, Goku didn't say 'win this one for me'. I think he said 'Bring peace to this world. You want to be a scholar, right?' which I think is more impactful so I wish they did not change that. It shows Goku's understanding of Gohan as well.

There’s a confusing part of this episode. The word Gohan means “cooked rice” This is why the reporter asked “do they want to order food?” and throughout the rest of the episodes refer to Gohan as the delivery boy in English . So this is correct translation but most of us westerners forget the meaning of Gohans name and didnt get the joke so the comments seem somewhat weird or out of place.

One thing I always found interesting about this episode is when Goku gave Cell the sensor Bean they showed everyone else's reaction. But they never showed Vegeta's reaction I wonder what he was thinking and as for Gohan i just loved when Gohan screaming and his theme starts up epic.
