In the manga, they said that Jiren would have wished for his master to be brought back to life to get his benediction/approval... after being left all alone in the world and betrayed by everyone, I can understand why he would want that. He's already all-powerful and pretty much no enemy can stand against him. Even the destroyer fears him. So, wishing for more power would be stupid on his part.

I like the manga more in a lot of cases, but I think in this case the anime did it better for me. Jiren just wanting to be all powerful makes him the perfect ploy for Goku, who would never even think of wishing for that because it would mean he can never be challenged again. It also makes Jiren more of a villain because he has no care for anyone or anything other than strength, regardless of how that strength is gained. But I can appreciate the manga version too. In that one I like how he chose not to save his teammates because he only trusts his own strength.

19:10: Fun fact, in this timeline, #17 & #18 never killed anyone, other than dr. Gero. They did a bit of random destruction, but never with any casualties (at least to our knowledge). They had several chances to kill or harm people, but always chose to walk away. That says a lot about their characters, even back then. Perhaps it was #16, who helped push them down a gentler path, than in Trunks' timeline.

Yeah I've seen that as a what if. Destroyers groom strong mortals from the beginning, including doing whatever it takes to make them strong enough. I think I've seen one where Vegeta ends up being God of Destruction, and destroying planet Vegeta, which although Frieza did Beerus ordered, was what pushed Vegeta to be stronger.

The question is how does U11 destroyer know about Jiren's past. Jiren rarely ever talks and U11 destroyer describes Jiren's backstory with perfect accuracy. Either Jiren told about the story, U11 destroyer been watching Jiren since birth or U11 destroyer was this "evil doer". Another theory is that this "evil doer" is Jiren himself like how Goku killed Grandpa Gohan. Jiren's master took upon Jiren to control Jiren's power but one moment, Jiren lost control and this led to Jiren's master death. This led to others staying away from Jiren for their own safety incase this ever happens again.

The manga did a much better job at explaining Jiren's story and motivation. He got mad at his team when they left him alone because he didn't even want to be in the tournament. He was there just in case he was needed, which he was.

I dont remember if the japanese version had jiren say he wanted the power to been time to his will but or anything too revealing. However I always thought that maybe that foe he fought was from one of the erased universes and never got a chance to avenge everyone. So I guessed he might wish back the other erased universes. I thought it was a cool idea since they said there were once 18 uinverse and thought that ones erased must have been very dangerous or something to be erased like having a powerful foe. This idea kept my mind running wild as the teaser to the DB super broly movie had yet to reveal the villain and the title of the movie.

Honestly I'm stoked about you guys getting into Dragonball! Since youre watching after Super, i think you'll get why Toriyama wanted Goku to go back to being his childish self. During Z, his power was only so high, and he wouldn't have been able to handle Majin Buu or Moro or whomever really, so he had to be serious. He wasn't able to completely chill out and be himself. Now that he has the power of literal godhood, he doesnt have to worry as much and can relax a bit. Go back to being the same guy Chichi fell in love with when they were kids.

17 can stand up to anyone as long as he is not killed, since he has infinite energy and does not get tired, plus he fights intelligently. That's why he lasted longer than Freeza against Toppo despite Freeza being a step stronger than him. And there with Jiren, Goku Vegeta and Freeza are ko but not 17 since he is tireless

Not sure what people think about Jiren’s backstory, but imo, I think it worsens his already empty character. He’s so built up as this unstoppable monster who has a wish that wants to make up for his dark past, but it isn’t compelling to me. That’d be like if Frieza on Namek didn’t say a word until his battle w/ our squad and dumped a whole backstory about how he wants immortality because he was bullied as a kid. If they really wanted to give him depth like this, I think flashes to the story from before the tournament starts and into his fights/meditation break would keep you wondering what this quiet guy is all about during the tournament

In the manga, the Cell Jrs. didn't explode like in the anime. Their brain matter and other organs were spattered on the ground, they eventually regenerated after the Cell Saga and went to 17's island. In Super's manga, Trunks & Goten fought with them when they went to look after the island during the T.O.P. I always assume that 17 constantly fought all 8 of the Cell Jrs to get stronger. Since he has infinite stamina, he can train for literal days and nights.

return of freeza movie reset the power scaling, higher natural base = faster gains from training, freeza at 120 million can get to god level in 4 months, 17 has an even higher base so he can improve even more from training (and buu even more than that)
