15:08 “You’re not even a challenge to me anymore.” With that one line, Goku just eviscerated Frieza’s pride. There is nothing more humiliating than losing to your most hated rival while they’re telling you that you are well beneath them, that you are so far behind that you’re basically boring them. Especially to a guy like Frieza, who was unchallenged for so long. And for it to be a Saiyan, a race he thought he exterminated, a race he demeaned as just “monkeys”, and one as pure of heart as Goku-his opposite in every way-it’s like throwing an entire can of salt on his open wound. No wonder Frieza slowly loses his mind in this fight.

I personally love this scene. Legends have foretold of the Super Saiyans, and even Captain Ginyu have often stated that Super Saiyans are supposed to be heartless killing machines. Even Master Roshi and King Kai were concerned if Goku was consumed by this power. Then after Goku was satisfied with what he planned do. Goku chooses the power down. It's a way of saying "No... I'm still Goku, I'm not heartless killer and I'm going to give you mercy" he chose the moral ground. And in some ways became a higher standard then the very legend itself that almost consumed him. It's very powerful, and it's why people love Goku's character. It's also the reason why Frieza is also the complete antithesis of Goku and one of the greatest villains. The only thing he ever cared about was his power over others, and his hatred to keep others in line. Now faced with someone that bests him, everything that defines him crumbles. He has no power over Goku.... So the only thing he has left is his hatred. And what's that going to do for him? Even in the face of defeat he chooses no peace. And as a result in later episodes.... His life becomes worse. His own hatred is dooming him.

You can't just destroy an energy disk. You have to have an overwhelming absurd power gap over your opponent to destroy it. Energy discs are meant cut through almost anything, including people who are stronger than you. (Even other energy attacks.) That's why krillin managed to cut Frieza's tail off, and almost kill him earlier on. (If one of them hit him) Right now Frieza's energy disks are superior to Krillins, mainly because they can follow the opponent and be controlled by Frieza.

Idk about that since Gohan caught two energy discs from cell and destroyed them with just his energy so Goku could've destroyed them if he wanted to.

A lot more huger in comparison to the power gap between Goku and Frieza. While Goku was more powerful than Frieza. Frieza still had enough power to at least contend. So no. The difference was vast.

Fun fact: Mashiro Shimanuki did this cut (scene) from 4:54 to 6:04. He's a veteran animator that worked on Dragon Ball onward to Dragon Ball GT and Dragon Ball Super. You can tell his scenes by how he draws the faces in comparison to other episodes. His style tends to be softer and snappy. Another notable examples: Goku & Piccolo vs Raditz in Ep 4, Chi-chi chased by wild boar, Vegeta kicking Android 19, Cell's perfect form transformation 2nd version, etc.

"Is this the final attack?" Poker face. Nice. The fight between Goku and Frieza is kind of like a marathon runner against a sprinter. Frieza, going flat out, can keep up with Goku in the short term and even overtake him a little, but he can't keep that pace up forever. Whereas Goku can keep fighting at that level for a long, long time. Goku's only slightly stronger than Frieza at 100%, but Frieza just gases out. It's a similar story that'll....well.....let's just say we might see something similar in the future. Yeah, the discs are really difficult to deal with. They're razor thin on the edges which means that they can penetrate the 'armour' that ki generally provides, meaning they're capable of killing opponents way stronger than the person who created them (for example, Krillin almost kills Nappa with one - and would have if Vegeta hadn't warned Nappa. He also managed to cut off Frieza's tail with one). Frieza's way stronger than Krillin, so his disc is much more destructive and he's even able to control its trajectory. It actually says a lot about how much of a natural fighting genius Frieza is that he managed to not only copy Krillin's technique, but actually made it better. In the middle of a fight. There are a few examples in the anime where the discs are ineffective, and its kind of a big deal when it happens. Because otherwise they're stupidly powerful.

These discs rotate at a very astronomical speed depending on the user... since freiza was feared as one of the strongest warriors in universe until then...u can imagine how much of a killer move was it... Rotating discs can only be caught if the gaps in Power levels between the Superior opponent and the user....are off the charts

Goku is systematically breaking frieza down in this ep. The first shot to the solar plexus was the beginning of the end. When you think about it it’s almost like goku is physically and psychologically torturing him . Breaking both his body and his mind all at once

Over my years of watching dragon ball, I have noticed that the characteristics of the saiyans ( how they intensely train, and their love of fighting ) are similar to people who train in kyokushin karate ( I was a second DAN *2nd degree black belt* in the style ).. that style is known as one of the hardest hitting styles around, there is a form you learn in kyokushin, where the whole purpose is to take a beating, all you do is take the hits without blocking, I had boards broken over my head, arms, legs..

In regards to the destructo disk, it is a special kind of Ki. Razor Sharp. It is more than just pure energy. Only a being with a strong enough aura can deplete it and prevent themselves from getting cut. Not going to go any further than that because I don't want to spoil it.

@ 18:26 The answer to your question is not that Goku (can't) destroy Frieza's disks, he absolutely could with one of his own or a ki blast but rather that the plot of the story at this point in DBZ calls for Frieza's hubris to be the cause of his own downfall hence why his own attack is what cuts him down. At this point in the fight Goku had more stamina and power remaining than Frieza hence his little "it's done" speech, he probably could have finished him off with brute force or a big Kamehameha if they kept on going but he chose to disengage. Goku is pure to a fault in the sense that he looks for redeeming qualities even in the most genocidal of tyrants, as it pertained to Frieza in the end he chose to share some of his own energy to spare his life so he wouldn't bleed out on the ground and would actually have enough power to fly away from the exploding planet and drift off in space to contemplate his defeat and was forced into delivering the finishing blow against his will when Frieza turned around and used that little bit of ki he had just gained to blast Goku with it, too bad Goku also held back too much power just like when Frieza attempted to blow up Namek so in a sense they both failed to "get the job done". That's why Trunks was such a breath of fresh air when Mecha Frieza and King Cold came into the picture, cuz he wasn't messing around dragging things out over the longest 5 minutes in anime history, he got things done 1 episode.

I will always say this that heavy body shot that made Frieza cough up blood is what really ended the fight because common martial arts knowledge dictates that body shots do more damage to your opponent than just simple hits the head Goku was using real life martial arts knowledge to win because Goku realized during the fight that while Frieza is definitely more alien like in appearance his physiology and biology isn’t all to different from his own so Goku hit him in the body where vital organs should be making Frieza get more desperate so he makes more mistakes and Goku takes the fight that’s why this fight will always be my favorite fight in all of DRAGONBALL

You know, over the years people have started to speculate that the "five minutes" thing was just a bluff by Frieza and that he had no real idea how long Namek would take to blow. IIRC, I think he even says "five more minutes" several episodes after he blows the core.

Honestly it makes no sense how Frieza couldn’t destroy namek with his blast. He’s FREIZA for fuck sake. Hell even Vegeta destroyed a planet so easily without any effort and would have destroyed earth with his Gallic gun had Goku not countered it. And here we are to believe that the once strongest being in the universe can’t even destroy a planet with his blast that was meant for destroying the planet?! Even in a weakened state Frieza should be able to destroyed namek with ease.

@@locomojoboy2 I think Toriyama's mistake was having a villain be a planet-buster so early in DBZ. I think it set the bar for destructive capabilities for villains too high, especially considering what came after Vegeta. The go-to move of pretty much every main villain after him became "destroying the planet" when they should've been aiming for much bigger destruction at some point.

I'm honestly not sure why the disk can't be destroyed. My guess would be that it's very compresses energy, so it take a blast of greater energy density to destroy it. Again, complete guess and headcanon on my part, but that's my take.

Frieza simply won't put up with someone turning his back on him, he's used to everyone around him being afraid and trembling and choosing their words, and Goku was the first to do it because he saw fear in Frieza. He, who was Hitler in this universe of the story, now without fear someone tramples on his pride and turns his back, and he is not used to that !

Madison, Goku may behave casually towards Frieza, but keep in mind that as a super sayain, he is 50x more powerful than when he launched the spirit bomb at Frieza. Yeah, Frieza was able to get some licks in, but once Goku transformed, there was no way Frieza could defeat, let alone kill, Goku.

Not only did Goku leave Frieza out of mercy but he also had to go because the planet could explode any minute, Goku knew he was cutting it close. Also, Goku knew the fight was dragging on so he just dropped the fight and now just wants to escape the dying planet.

It's weird because in this episode we should see Frieza sending a large energy ball on Goku and Goku throw back it in space and the ball hit another planet and it's completely destroyed. Did they cut or removed this scene ? Same about Frieza hit Goku and he falls in lava but he is protected by a shield and come back to hit Frieza.

Ok so about why he let's Frieza live, it makes perfect sense. Instead of death, a bigger punishment for Frieza would be living knowing he lost to a Saiyan! A race he despised so so so much!!

The discs cant be destroyed because I think in order to destroy one, you need to be stronger. Coz if Im not wrong, Cell was able to stop de disc with his hand. And here Goku didnt destroy the disc because he wanted to use the disc to end Freeza.

The discs: They cut anything that touches them. It's better to avoid them than to shoot them down while still in the way. Goku tried letting Frieza live. So first I gotta ask, why are you watching the first Funimation dub? It's filled with inconsistencies, obvious ones at that, especially in this fight. All that "ALLY TO GOOD" BS was made up by the dub to make Goku look like a superhero when he clearly isn't. Along with other things to as kid's cartoon marketing. Y'know, think what would 4Kid's do and why nobody likes them. Hell, Funimation themselves can tell you this is full of some pretty bad inconsistencies and aims to be closer to the source, which is why many of their dub are way different than here. But people liked this dub, only because they heard this first. The marketing worked. Cuz OH BOY you're in for a shock as to the REAL reason why Goku tried to let Frieza live. And I'll give you a hint. It's the same selfish reason Goku let Piccolo live and begged Krillin to let Vegeta escape.
