First of all, I'm thrilled that Jason Thune of DLT Trading is making introductory videos with Mike Stewart and his new Bark River cutlery. Thanks Jason and Mike. ... I've spoken with both of them at length on the phone and can attest to the fact that they're both great, extremely knowledgeable guys. They're both a credit to their companies, as well as the industry. ... ... Now, to the Golok II. ... In the past, I worked for State of Alaska, DNR, Division of Forestry, Fairbanks Area Office as a Forestry Technician. In wildfire season, I worked on an Initial Attack Helicopter crew, as first responders to new, remote wildfires - mostly lightning starts in the White spruce of the Tanana Valley State Forest. Our suppression tools were chainsaws, pulaski axes, and round point shovels. The State issued us Woodsman's Pals with the stacked leather washer handle and saber guard. None of us found them to be worth the weight of carrying. We needed to rapidly construct firelines through White and Black spruce. That involved removing the small saplings as well as limbing up the larger conifers, so a ground fire wouldn't climb the "ladder fuels." Neither chainsaws, nor pulaskis are very effective for that work. Over the years, I occasionally saw someone on the 16 person handcrews hired on an emergency basis, with a large Bowie knife, rapidly performing that work, but not often. A Sandvik bush axe is pretty effective for that too, but it's also fairly bulky and more difficult to pack. (Handcrews in the lower 48 are 20 person, because they're deployed with rolling stock. Alaskan crews are 16 person, because they come from remote, roadless villages and deploy to very remote staging areas with wilderness airstrips, or gravels bars, etc. A Twin Otter can carry 16 people with their gear, but not 20 - so 16 it is in Alaska.) I've been on thousands of those Helitacs. I think the Golok, or Golok II would probably be ideal for that type work. It'd also be very handy for quickly building a comfortable primitive camp for the duration of each incident. That's important when your working a minimum of 16/7s all season. They call that bushcrafting now. We just called it our life, back in the day and didn't think twice about scandi grinds and such. ... In the winter, Forest Technicians in Alaska did resource work. That involved cruising timber with snowshoes, and traversing the timber sale perimeters. We needed to cut line of sight the length of a surveyors chain from station to station on each leg of the traverse so the guy at each end the chain could shoot a compass azimuth to the other guy. Golok II would be perfect fo that. Albeit, GPS has probably radically changed how traversing timber is done now. ... I think the Bark River Kephart 5", which I now am proud to own, would be the perfect belt knife for that life too. Necessities then were cutting tons of fiber tape (to keep helispots free of FOD), making things from MRE cardboard and cubitainer boxes, cutting cord, preparing all your own meals, which included slicing 5 lb canned hams, 5 lb Tillamook cheeses, spreading peanut butter and jelly from jars, dicing onons, potatoes, carrots, etc. ... I think Horace Kephart and Mike Stewart are on to something. ... Thanks guys, Marty

I like the design philosophy of the golok. I am in Southeast Asia and I use traditional parangs and goloks for clearing brushes and chopping dead branches and bamboos for firewood. The fact that most of the time the jungle here are dense, an axe is really useless here. Then I found out from my friend about Bark River’s Golok and pre-ordered one from DLT the last time and man do I love it! It swings well and slices like cutting through butter. Looking forward to what the 2.0 can do.

I have a Golok 1- 3V and am extremely satisfied with its performance. If you wield it right, cutting 1.5 inch hardwood saplings with one swing is possible. And it's a well carriable 1 pound package (without sheet). Awesome product by BRKT! Now guys, why do you produce and why should I buy a heavier, less nimble and more cumbersome tool?
@jovanvojnovic1944 жыл бұрын
Because it's an improvement.
@Kantahh4 жыл бұрын
Sorry but more weight, larger size, less balance and just a half flat grind is not an improvement. Too much of a price for just a larger handle...
@jovanvojnovic1944 жыл бұрын
@@Kantahh Mate, it's just an inch longer, and minimally wider... a wider blade makes it definitely better for chopping. As for the weight...I guess you should use it first before you start complaining...😀
@Kantahh4 жыл бұрын
No need to use it buddy. Physics and maths don't lie. 0.5" wider and 2" longer at that thickness will be around 5 oz heavier (without considering the handle difference)...that makes quite a difference in carrying and using.
@jovanvojnovic1944 жыл бұрын
Again, Max, it's not two inches longer...It's just an inch. The weight gain is hardly worth mentioning though.

I welcome the new changes. However, I do not like the idea of this replacing the existing Golok. Why not offer both - and let the customer decide between the shorter and longer versions?
