Nice video. I bought a similar used Barker (originally had pneumatic feed on the X Axis and micrometer feeds for Y and Z axis) back in 1989 for $40. Bought it along with an Atlas 618 lathe. It sat in my garage for most of those years in between. In 2019 I cleaned it up a bit and bought draw in collets. End mills, the. It sat again. Now in 2024, I’m going to try to get it going and use it to cut a slot. Thanks for the video. DC

Hi very nice series of videos on the barker milling machine, a riser block is available. However I would like to raise my mill up to 5 inches higher to accommodate a larger vice have you modified your mill any further? Please post more videos. Thanks

I recently stumbled onto one of these little mills while buying a work bench off an old timer. An hour and a half and $300 later it was mine. I'm very interested in your thoughts on making micrometer dials. Mine dose have factory dials on the Z and Y axis but I think that with an accurate X this could be a fun and thought provoking way of milling. Kinda get the horizontal half of the brain working. Also interested in the mini vice used on the barker in another one of your vids. Great vids. Thanks for making them.

I plan on making dials for it when I get the mill back up and running. It is still in pieces being rebuilt. Lately I haven't had the time to work on it, or any other video for that mater. I'm hoping to get back to it soon. Which is just amazing. I use this vise for my lathe milling attachment. It by no means is the best vise out there but it does the job well. I'm going to get a tilting vise for it so I can mount the vise at 90 degrees. This way I can do operations that are typically done on a vertical machine.

Very cool. I would have liked an AM, much more versatility with over arm support. I plan on starting the dials in the next month or so. Currently it is still in pieces getting prepped for paint.

Basement Machinist - It would be really great to have a power feed for it. have you thought about doing that?

I have, and is something I may consider. I'm pretty sure it will be limited to just the X axis. The Y and Z axis will require removing the graduated dials to attach a motor. For the X axis, a lead screw can be made the full length of the table with a graduated dial on one end and a power feed motor on the other. I probably will end up adding power feed to it. It will most certainly be a custom job.

Agreed. Same here. My machine has a lever feed for the X Axis, which is the one I'd look to convert to a power feed.If you tackle that project, I would really like to see how you do it. Thanks again for posting. Great stuff!

Would you recommend a Barker mill for a home hobby mill?

If the projects you are doing can benefit from a horizontal mill, then yes. This little mill is very capable, but it does have it limitations. The major limitation being it does not have an over arm support. So, you will not be able to use conventional horizontal mill cutters. It is also is fairly small. For me that isn't much of an issue because everything I do is relatively small. I would not, however, recommend it as a first mill in the shop. For that I would recommend a vertical mill hands down.
