BARLBOROUGH: Bolsover Parish #6 of 16

The very Northwestern corner of the District of Bolsover for you today guys, this one's a very big village that had a lot to see and talk about. The great thing about this one is that most of the stuff that's featured here is so very easily accessed thanks to the Monnies Trail. In 1586, the bodies of the dead from the Plague here were buried in a sloping hillside known as The Monument Field or Monnies Field. That name has now become a name for a circular walk around this village.
Beginning at the Heritage Centre, the Monnies Trail will take you past a nature reserve, a golf club, and through a housing estate which a few years ago wouldn't have existed. In fact, what would have been there in their place would have been the Slayley Opencast Mine and a colliery, which of course have now long gone. Very little evidence of them remain now, but Slayley Green does take its name from the Opencast mine.
The industrial estate which took its place has quite a number of big names. A certain huge multinational company owned by a Mr Bezos for one is based on the estate, known as the Links. Some big name fast food outlets can be found here as well as a hotel and a pub, and speaking of pubs, this village has plenty of those.
The most notable is the De Rodes Arms named after William Hatfield De Rodes who lived at the massive Hall (which is now a school) here. He also constructed the amazing "mizpah" gate which is the entrance to the memorial garden here too. This village has history of all kinds everywhere you look, so it's no surprise that the Heritage Centre exists. I'm lad it does, because it made captioning this video much easier!
We are at Junction 30 of the M1, where the A616 crosses the A619. This is the amazing DERBYSHIRE (not Sheffield, thanks to residents in 1969-71) parish of BARLBOROUGH.

the tree sculpture used to be a bear - as bear fights used to happen in the area. the bear sculpture was made in about 2011 if my memory serves, and that was made from a fairly old tree that stood next to the primary school.
