Jamie, Annabbella and I head into the Urban Jungle to rescue a rare and desirable 1968 Buick Riviera Grand Sport that has been in a concrete tomb for the past ten years. Will we be able to make it run?

I owned an identical 1968 Buick Riviera G.S. In London, England, in the early 70s. Same colour, same black roof, same bucket seats, and those gorgeous wheels and very stylish centre caps. It did have a nice chrome finisher around the front white marker lights though, which finished the trim off well. In the 90s i spent time, on and off, in the U.S.A working and came across a 1968 Buick Wildcat with a similar perfectly shaped roofline, rather than the upright style, the motor etc was also the 430 c.i. Drove it for over 30,000 miles all over the U.S.A, usually with a trailer. Both went like rockets and never let me down, not even a puncture. Check out the road tests of the time, very interesting.

Glad it started. If you baby that motor it could last quite a while. If I had bought the car, I would no doubt have the engine done, as I am only going to scorch a bearing on an old engine like that - the big Blocks are too much fun to lean into - ya Know? Been there a few times with Buicks...lol!

If there's no oil pressure, it's probably because when the engine was rebuilt, the oil pump wasn't primed correctly. When rebuilt, the front mounted oil pump must be packed with Vaseline petroleum jelly or similar lubricant before reassembling the gears in order to prime the pump correctly. That's a weak spot on an otherwise durable engine. Nice find and good luck with your 78 Riviera.
@charlesgrayson15103 жыл бұрын
I'm not surprised one bit the Riviera started uo with no hassle. As far as engines goes, the Buick small block 350 V8, 231 V6, and big block 400, 430, and 455 V8 are GM's best along with the older Cadillacs

Oil pump time!!! Buicks were external on the timing cover so easy job!!!
@whammond5114 жыл бұрын
srdale56 Agree!! Buicks often had oil pump trouble after 100K. I had a ‘76 225 Limited Pk. Ave. Which went through 2 oil pumps at 110K & again at 140K. 2nd time I put in a high volume oil pump. No more problems after that. Probably what Heraldo Riveria needs!!

@douglasbrown81754 жыл бұрын
The oil pump on that should be part of the timing chain cover and you can get to the relief spring right from the outside. Maybe the spring is broken or the valve is stuck. An oil pump comes as a kit, relief valve, spring, and new gears. Sure wish I could afford that one.
@thomaslord79954 жыл бұрын
Agreed. This (low oil pressure) could be a result of worn pump gears. A Buick tech told me about that thirty years ago. The gears are subject to premature wear when a new oil filter is installed without pre-filling it with oil, over several oil changes. Minor wear is noticable on start-up (noise). More serious wear may result in the lifter noise. Possibly, who ever rebuilt the engine overlooked the pump gears. The engine should be in good shape otherwise, with 42,000 miles on the rebuild.

Part it out? Hell no! That's a classic!

my first car was a 68 RIV GS I wish it wasn't on the west coast I would love to have another, main issue if you got disc brakes which was an option rotors are non existent, before you start it remove the oil pump, replace the gears and reprime it. Mine had the longer front cornering lamps and below the body molding it had full chrome, that one doesn't have it, looks like the ac compressor clutch blew they can be changed, if you want to check the compressor you grabbed the wrong part of it you have to grab the part all the way in the front.

Hank, thanks for being honest about the mileage you got with these cars. You get people claiming they got 10 or 20+ mpg out of their 1969 or 1970 Electra....I have to laugh !- I have some of each of these cars and now have a 74 Buick Century GS 455 (Built to High compression specs) and I have always gotten around 7 or 8 MPG. My 69 Electra convert maybe got 10 MPG with the rebuilt engine and carb.

I know it's been a long time but Buick engines have an exterior oil pump and they tend to lose prime pull of cover and pack with assembly lube patrolium jelly it will get pressure prime with drill already run long enough
