with a locked up engine and a spare rusted up engine that looks like it was in a flood. lets see if we can build a runner out of these 2 junk ones. been off the road since the 70s, this one is powered by a 1.8L porsche engine that has been stuck for who knows how long, well I love the body style and had to have it. lets see what I got us into and what it will take to get it back on the road,

You know I always wanted a Beatle, from the first time I saw one in Bowman ND back in 1965. Well in about 75 I started to deal on one down in El Paso Texas at a fly by night car dealer just off base from Fort Bliss. I took her for a test drive, I think it was a "Super Beatle" the way the guy talked anyhow, and she did run out like a dream, my wonderful wife even liked it. Then We got back from the 10 or 12 block test drive, and I parked her back on line. I opened the back hood and looked at the engine, there was oil flowing from that cooler, at the time I had no idea what the hell it even was and I don't think the salesman did either. He made some excuse about the car sitting still for so long and told me the leak would go away with driving. I didn't buy the explanation, and I didn't buy the car either. I went to another dealer and purchased an Opel Manta, never did regret my decision, that little baby blue Opel was indeed my dream car, and later, when my wonderful wife got her drivers license, her first car was a puke green Opel Manta 1900. She absolutely loved that car, and when it finally died and we could no longer find Opel's, she settled for Buicks since Buick imported the Opel. God how I miss my wonderful wife who was taken from me by cancer after 51 years and 4 days...

For ventilation on the engine, I'd just run some flexible ducting (like on a clothes dryer) from those two side vents to the intake on the fan shroud with a Y at the fan. I'd make sure there was a dip in the hose to allow water to drain out because you will pick some up through those vents.

I did a valve job on a set of heads for my girlfriends camaro a few months back, blown head gasket, the intake valves had small pits. Just sanded the pits while it was in a drill and brought it up to a worn out 220 grit to eliminate stress risers

If you would put one drop of oil in your valve grinding compound on the valve face it well do much better.

Love watching these videos. Seriously, I know very little how engines work. I learn a bunch each time I watch. At least enough to begin to understand what the mechanic tells me when he's fixing my car. Thank you sir. :-)

I've been watching your videos for the last couple of years and I must say, even though I'm not really mechanically inclined, I could probably rebuild an old Beetle engine now. I learned things I never even knew about Beetles and Buses. I also want to say, watching your videos have gotten me through some hard times, especially this month. I wish I could buy one of your old Beetles too.

My dad always tells me VW stories from when he was a mechanic. Really cool to see what he talks about on video and by someone who works similarly to him. Love it that you take time with the little details, but working with what you've got. No need for high dollars when you've got this kind of knowledge to make it work.

Hey, just a little tip when taking out the valves. If you lay the head down on the workbench take a socket and place it over the valve spring caps. Take a big hammer and give it a good whack. May take a couple of wacks but the retainers should pop right out. If you get used to this it takes like 2 mins to take all the valves out.

@@steveb6103 For mounting the valves you will need that tool. And for taking them out its not the 'wrong' way. Im just saying its a lot faster to just whack em out with a socket.

I’m the world's least mechanically minded person, yet I can watch you strip down and rebuild an engine and you make me understand everything you are doing and why. Einstein said a genius isn’t a man who understands a theory, but one who can explain it to someone who didn’t previously understand it.

12:26 what he meant about the valve contact being too big is as time goes they will wear some because they spin as they open and close is most engines so they will wear making the contact wider, you want a decent contact area so the valves stay cool but if they are 100% contact then they will have a hard time sealing for some reason
