Go to www.ammonyc.com to get the free Barn Find Assessment Checklist
Today's story is about a true barn find. The car in question is a 1966 Porsche 912, which was last registered 23 years ago. We discovered the car thanks to our friend Roger Garbow, from Full Throttle Marketing. He had received a call about the car's discovery and immediately forwarded the info to us, here at Drive Clean. Address in hand, we turned our crews around and headed-off to a northern region of Connecticut where we unearthed and restored this classic car. Watch as we assess our find, remove years of accumulated filth and grime, and initiate the paint correction phase on this 912's "Irish Green" shell.

ever since I found Larry's vids, my car has never looked better. And as far as people saying he does this or that wrong, if he didn't know what he was doing, would he be trusted to touch a $2,000,000 Ferrari? Or that 1 of 143 AMG CLK63? Think I'll listen to Larry, and not some youtube keyboard commandos.

We spoke about it at length in the video, but the seals on this car are non-existent so the water (if used) would go right through the car. (believe me I would MUCH rather wash the car in the normal fashion, but its condition would not allow me to do so safely) Thx for watching. -L

I have an autobahn trim 2010 accord in crystal black pearl that I got from Europe and with my extensive detailing knowledge and great tips from you I was able to level the paint and produce a deep see through finish.....keep it up !!!!

Looks fantastic,my only problem would be the tires,after 20 plus years standing, they need to be changed, rubber degrades over time.Original or not, if its going to be driven, safety first.

Indeed. As someone who just brought his 911 back from a 7 yr idle period, I can attest that the tires need replacing. After having my gas tank cleaned, and oil and brake fluid changed, I thought I could get by on my old 8-10 yo tires. They were badly flat-spotted and felt like driving on rocks. I had my car towed in and the above repairs done before I ever would have started it. I cringed at the final seconds of this video therefore. I realize mechanicals were not the point of this video, but some brief mention of them would have been in order here to warn people to be careful.
@carpespasm
@carpespasm 6 жыл бұрын
The point of the video is more the detailing work, rather than the mechanicals. The detailing guy's job is to make the car look as good as possible, and he's catering to the whims of someone who's blowing a lot of cash on having people restore his barn find car. Those types of people tend to be very image-aware, and how the detail guy talks about his process and planning and all that jazz is definitely tuned to telling his clients in a way they're comfortable with why his cleaning and polishing job is worth their money. While both he and his client know that those tires need replacing if that thing's gonna be driven, the detail guy's job is to make the car look good. Even if he knows those tires are going to basically be used to roll the thing into a shop and be immediately tossed, the owner will winge about them and think less of the detail guys work. It's functionally wasted effort to ensure that the owner doesn't have any apprehension that the detail guy cut corners.
@chuckschillingvideos

The purpose of leaving the ancient tires on is to provide evidence of originality. When the car reaches its "forever" home, the owner can swap out rims and tires.

I bought from an Authorised Main Ferrari Dealer, a 19 year old low mileage Ferrari. It had about 16,000 on it. The dealer carried out a full service as part of the purchase cost. The dealer had organised a 3,500 mile trip to Monaco & back via other places in Europe, after 1500 miles the inner cords on all four tyres were showing!! We had been driving at very fast speeds. The car had to be left in Switzerland as it was undriveable on the worn out tyres. but it was cheaper to recover it back to the UK, before fitting four new tyres!!! The perfect looking tyres were the originals. The moral here is don’t trust a dealer to go to the expense of renewing tyres on low mileage old classic cars!!! This was an expensive trip as that same dealer refused to pay towards the cost to recover the car!! Nor towards the tyres! From this and other expenditure through lack of use I now will not entertain the purchase of low-mileage classic cars!! Cars need regularly being driven and maintenance based on age not mileage.

+Joe Smith Ghosts are ridiculously bad at conveying understandable messages. I think it won't do your friends or your cars a lot of good to be haunted. But hey, it's just a Porsche, they're not so rare. The maddest recent vehicle barn were a couple of Buran spacecraft, which now makes all 3 accounted for (one was crushed into pieces by accident), which were lost because the actual barn they were in disappeared off the property lists and was a secret object. This was a Russian Shuttle-like spacecraft which promised to be highly economical due to not being shot up by a rocket, but launching from the top of a special aeroplane, but the programme was cancelled for various reasons, among those because it wasn't deemed safe enough, in spite of a successful round-trip. The heat shield damage on re-entry was deemed a bit too risky. Evidently, similar risks existed in US Space Shuttle but were ignored at the time.

You're also not considering that when the car was parked it was not as valuable as it is today. The owner may of had intentions to repair or do work to the car to allow them to drive it without doing permanent and irreparable damage to the car but never got back to it.

i was kind of expecting some attention to the engine or other mechanical parts... they literally just polished the car O_o
@AllAroundAshton
@AllAroundAshton 10 жыл бұрын
Mostly likely he did clean the engine and other mechanicals, but this was already a 30 minute video which is much longer then his usual videos. It takes a lot of work and a lot of time to edit and optimize a video. I bet the engine cleaning was behind the scenes, considering he already has a video dedicated to cleaning an engine. But yea, I was a bit surprised to, especially when he was like "woaaahhh, look at all these cob webs!" haha.

This is a true restoration. All its originality remains. Any replacements means it is not an original.

nope, true restoration means replacing all necessary components with original components in order to keep factory specifications, this was in best case some washing..

The paint was restored to original shine. Sir you show your inexperience when not knowing what compound and a wool pad does to the paint.

Paint resto is just a fancy way of saying he cleaned/washed the car. The 912 was dirty at most, bit of a misleading title really.

Obviously this car needs way more attention. You can easily save that paintjob, treating the rust, small dings and really bringing back the chrome will take far more work than what this guy did. I would've never steam cleaned the car, the rubbing on the paint with dirt leaves tiny scratches, I know he mentioned those, but why not replace the seals and just clean it properly. I get it's a 912, it's a good find, I certainly would love it, but take time. Last thing I would've worried about was tire shine, properly cleaned wheels need to be removed from the car. This is a BASIC, very BASIC "restoration" tons more needs to be addressed, I wouldn't have wasted this car on a basic restoration tutorial.

god this kind of "reality" show is just awful... two guys staring through the windows of a garage WHILE THE CAMERA GUY IS INSIDE NEXT TO THE CAR, and one dude says "is the garage open"? ... sigh... Just get to the car and the "restoration". This silly fake drama is enough to make me puke.

Has anyone considered they got certain shots after events had happened and edit them in earlier for better framing and viewing. Is it open couldve been how it was shot, once the opened it the camera guy went in and got stock footage of he car in the dark garage as stock footage to use later... or are you people too dumb to consider such things?

As someone who has restored cars, the deadline aspect is total baloney. If any owner gives you a deadline, you should refuse the job.

Drive it in rain and safe yourself a tons of money. All that on the car is just a dry dust, it's not greasy, it'll just come off. This video is, what's wrong with 'murica, people claiming to be experts at nothing getting paid for their wisdom.

Philip Cooper You clearly don't know what happens to neglected paint nor have you even opened a hood of a car; I hope you're some mindless troll but simply washing it doesn't restore the fresh Irish green paint that it has when it came out of the factory

It's a 2 year old comment so if he comes back I'll be surprised. Still, just in case: Rain doesn't include polishing. If you want your car paint to look dull then OK, fine; that's your choice but to say "save a buck" and expect the same result won't work.
