Thanks for the memory. I bought one new in 77. It was sitting on a dealer lot and had been ordered by someone who cancelled because it took way to long to be delivered because he ordered the T-roof. It was the two tone blue, had NO A/C, but did have the blue vinyl buckets, tilt wheel and AM/FM. The dealer also had one on the showroom floor that was LOADED but had the split bench velour interior and I wasn't thrilled with the split bench, so I bought the other one. I have seen a few black and silver and yellow and golds sitting at other dealers, but none had the T-roof. One DID have the sunroof. I sold it when I was sent to Germany and car insurance in the early 80's was outrageous.

My grandparents adopted me at age 3, and Grandma bought a brand new 1976 Dodge Charger SE. It was a beauty. Dove grey with that bordello red velour interior, buckets with console shifter, 360 4V. Man, I wanted that car! But they traded it in 1979 for a brand new New Yorker Fifth Avenue Edition with the 360 2V. That one is a beauty as well, and I do have that one here in my garage in SoCal thanks to them keeping it for me in a garage in Western PA for years and leaving it to me in their will. Both that 76 360 and the 79 360 had Lean Burn. It works fine until it doesn't. LOL. I still have it on my New Yorker, although it had failed at some point and someone (probably my uncle Ken, since he thought he knew about cars) had installed a supposed good used (but wrong) one from a junkyard. Well, when I got the car shipped across the country to me in 2014, it didn't run. I discovered that incorrect Lean Burn computer, and RockAuto actually had ONE correct rebuilt unit. I installed that, and she fired right up, runs beautifully to this day. That Lean Burn system can advance the ignition timing all the way up to 56 degrees advance! Crazy. But at 108k miles, it hasn't hurt that 360 one bit. And it gets more than 20 MPG on the highway, if you keep her under 65 and it's kinda flat. Anyway, rant over, and I do dig that Charger Daytona! Probably rare back in the day, and rarer than hen's teeth today! Thanks for getting into the Malaise Era, Mortske! Love it, man! Stay cool, brother!

Despite all the crappy rust in all the corners she looks better than what I use as a daily driver. No joke intended. I think these Canadian Mopars were never rust proof from the factory. So you can't blame just neglection, humidity and road salt on it. If you do look close you can see one of the leaf spring mounts is crooked as was the towing hitch. I think she has had some trailer sliding or collision going on. Cause how else you bent the leaf spring clamp that bad. For what this car is it's actually one of the best starter package if you want a none tampered Mopar to restore. Always love the Mortske minute, these help me to understand what went on elsewhere behind the iron curtain. You should make a board of the oldest batteries you have come across, should be a fun one to put together. I do regret spending 2k on something else years ago...should have saved it up for this rig.

@peteloomis84563 ай бұрын
There's a company that's called DUI who makes mopar big block electronic distributors that the top half is the exact same thing as the GM HEI distributors and they work great but if you have to run tall valve covers because of using roller rockers the distributor cap will hit the valve covers so most guys stick with the MSD distributor and brain box with the rpm chips that can change the rpm limits and the advance curves. They aren't cheap but they work very good .

The oil pumps on the left hand side of the block & its possible that the check ball & spring might be stuck so oil pressure is low and there's a cap you can unscrew to pull the spring & check ball out .To increase pressure just add a washer or 2 to put more pressure on the spring . Chrysler engines distributors can only go in one of 2 ways so if it doesn't start & run just flip the rotor the opposite direction and it should fire right up. Those 400 blocks make great stroker engines because the 400 has the largest bore of all the Mopar big blocks and a lot of guys are building 451 strokers out of them or 500 cube B block which is the 400 block stroked and they can make some serious power with the right parts . Check out Switzer racings B1 headed 400 big block stroker that makes over 1,000 HP at 10,000 rpms that uses a mostly stock 400 B block that's been machined for racing . If you can find a industrial 400 B engine those make even better stroker engines because the main webs for the blocks crank mains are thicker giving the block more strength without having to use cement or block filler that hardens to help strengthen the block more . The Chrysler engines can make huge power but the downside is they are never cheap to build compared to the Chevrolet or Ferds as I call them because parts are more expensive and to have any machining on them done for performance cost more as well being most machine shops are set up for the Chevrolet or Ferds. Check out a KZbin channel called Jim's automotive because it's a father son run machine shop who does engine machining and often fix engines that other machine shop would call unrepairable and junk .

Holy hell Batman. I fricken lost it when the gas tank perfumed your shop. On another note I enjoyed your Mortske minutes since I am old enough to have seen those vehicles and when they hit 200 on the track. I haven’t seen fireworks for the carb. From Leanburn to ride the lightning.

I got learnt real good on this one. Didn't care for the car too much but oh baby, the Bluzer has a killer look. What a peach!

Find a 77 or 78 Dodge Monaco or Plymouth Fury police package, that was the only way to get the 440 without emissions in that era. And they could light up the tires!! Some cars have value just because they exist, I'm guessing this is one of those cars. I've never seen one like it, and I've seen a lot of cars. So, yeah, it might be worth something. Either way, I love that paint and stripe scheme....very cool, even if it doesn't have the horsepower just the looks alone does it. Good job getting her running, Mort! Thanks for sharing!

Your giving this Charger away , there's two grands worth of parts and that's without a sweet running engine and great set of gears front and back . That's a Daytona you have there , It's not Barret J stock but still running and driving , I wish I was thirty years younger and still fit to drive !! anyway I really loved the presentation , What with the humor , and Duff Dog your still to of the tree . Till next time your for sure fan in Canada sends salutations and God Speed , Stuart ..

Man am I glad we didn't know about those autofirecrackersmokebombs! Thanks for doing a Chrysler product - watched Puddin do up a Chrysler the other day. Said he would LS swap it😂. I had to let that go when I saw his sweet dance moves.😅

I am so happy to see one of these car's on your channel, I also liked it's cousins the Mirada and the Magnum and No not the Station Wagon 😅 and Then when you opened the hood and I saw the Dreaded LEAN BURN BOX on the side of the Breather Cause they Suck, Back when Fram was Still Good I quit using them after having two different cars develop 📍 holes in the canister and almost blew up the engine, Always Enjoy the MORTSKE Minute.

Our 78 dodge magnum xe had the same steering wheel as this Daytona charger se, and a 78 Dodge power wagon w150 prospector also had the same steering wheel with the aluminum wood grain panel on the top center of the horn button over the steering wheel

My older brother got a brand new 1980 mustang at 18 and at 18 my little sister got a 280Z 2+2. I got the hand me down 1976 Dodge Charger SE. It had that same death trap LeanBurn electronic ignition system. It would cut out and sometimes off when I gave it gas to pull out on the highway. That thing was a big problem and death mobile…. Made me wonder if I was a surprise mistake baby…..Middle Child Problems.

I painted one of those for a friend of one of my wives. It was blue on blue body color, I think I like the silver/black scheme. The metallic paints had problems back then, obviously, but they look pretty nice when finished nicely.

That's a cool ride. You are correct about cars in that era. Not much on HP or collectability but as a daily rig they can't be beat for comfort. I was daily driving my 77 Cougar XR7 with 73k miles. Perfect shape... until last Tuesday. Got rear ended and that was that. If you know of any rear bumpers for a 77 Cougar sitting around in your area in interested. Also need bumper filler panels and bumper brackets.

Prefilling an oil filter and installing it horizontally is really not that messy (compared to removing the old one). The oil can only flow out of the threaded center hole as the most filters have a check valve flap behind the outer ring of holes (oil inlet). Just hold the filled filter vertically and quickly tip it onto the threaded mounting boss and spin it on. I maintained 4 cyl Hondas for years and learned to do this while laying on my back in the driveway 😁 I remember those old engine fireworks from the 1960s, not that I ever put one on a buddies car. Dont know why it would be inside the air filter housing unless you were trying to burn it up.
