Barn Find Fergie. Episode 7. How to Rebuild an Engine

Jimmy de Ville's Garage

3 жыл бұрын

In this episode Gav and Jimmy get busy demonstrating how to rebuild an engine as they refit the head to their Standard 20C diesel engine.
This project follows a Barn Find 1953 Ferguson TEF 20 Little Grey Fergie. This vintage tractor was found in a hedge where it had sat for 31 years. Can Jimmy de Ville (from Goblin Works Garage) and Gav (former RAF engineer) bring it back to life using their engineering, building, fabrication and make do and mend skills?
There might be extreme, dangerous and crazy measures needed to breath life back into this retro, vintage vehicle and once farming extreme machine.

It's great to see you both making progress with the fergie,one tip for future reference,a little wipe of the studs with a cloth treated with some paraffin or a dose of that penetrating spray,gets you home more easily when fitting copper gaskets,and as the block and head haven't been surfaced,by the look of it ,a slight smear of Wellseal,if you can still get it ?,would help the head gasket to seat without crinkling the copper. I'm enjoying the series very much ,thankyou both,see you next week .

Best time to check the valve sealing is any point between torquing the head down and setting the tappets. Use an adapter in the injector hole to fill each cylinder with compressed air. Spray oil into the ports and watch for bubbles.

Make sure to check the clearance on the valve decompressor rack when setting valve clearance. This opens 3 valves slightly when the decompressor is applied. You can set the clearance when the valve the decompressor acts on is fully closed. Another trick of mine is to use copper washers on the bolts holding on the cam follower cover and the diesel pump gear cover on the timing cover as oil made its way out through the bolts on both my diesel Fergies. Great work and following with interest.

We'll be checking that decompressor when setting the tappets. Is there any setting angles we should know about?
@dazsden
@dazsden 3 жыл бұрын
There's a hole in the top of the bracket around the decompressor shaft above cyl 2. Turn the shaft until you can fit a screwdriver or drill bit down into it. This lines the shaft up in the off position. Set the clearance to 30 thou for cyl 1, 2 and 4 and set cyl 3 to 45 thou. This can be done as long as the valve under it it fully closed and as long as the drill bit is holding the decompressor shaft in the off position. They rarely need setting but way better to check in case they are holding a valve open!!

It might be worth giving Cheffins Machinery Auctions at Sutton, Cambridgeshire a ring for the wheels and tyres. They auction a lot of old MF tractors and wheels and tyres. The best whippy ice cream is from a permanent kiosk on the harbour at Blakeney in Norfolk. Tastes like it is made from Jersey milk, no water, just beautifully thick and creamy. I have been known to drive the 90miles just to get my “fix” from there......
