Barnsley 1972 - Town in Redevelopment

Barnsley during 1972, showing redevelopment work under way on the new market complex (town centre) and Harborough Hills retail area (formerly Redfearn's glassworks and Star paper mill). Also an advert for Yorkshire Electricity being filmed outside the YEB showrooms. Amateur 8mm film.

We lived in Wilthorpe in 72 and I can remember the pool. Great video.

My grandfather worked on the town he always reminded me every time we was in town he be like..... see that there I worked on that haha

That view of the old Harborough Hills, with Burton Bank in the background is fantastic. Remember feeling scared when my grandad drove his car up there.

I did my emergency stop on my driving test going down there on a cold, damp, foggy November morning in 1972, when the road was still narrow and half-cobbled. It was a very long 'emergency' stop but I pulled up without skidding, and passed. The examiner said he wanted to see whether I was as competent as I was confident.

@@kevingreen20 I did mine in 1979 and I was dreading that option. I got Huddersfield Road, Honeywell and back up Old Mill Lane. Passed as well.

@xdm32 yeah cheers, I had a look on google maps the pools are long gone, shame that park actually looke like it was looked after. were you a film maker in the 70s then? I've seen somet of your other stuff seems like youve been some places

@Jaya365 Wilthorpe Park is still there, although the shelters (and perhaps the pool) are gone. If you enter 'xdm32' in the search box, you'll get all my old clips, for what they're worth. Only 3 clips relate to Barnsley.

What a depressing shit hole! Even as a kid going round Barnsley town centre I remember thinking those brown pebble-dash buildings are really ugly! Glad they flattened them.

The 70s market complex is a bloody monstrosity! Should have left the market as it was, in the open air up Market Hill, the way it had been for hundreds of years.
