I didn't realise until i watched this that Barry Hines had a memorial in Barnsley. He taught PE for two years at my school, Rutherford school in London, in the 1960's. What a lovely gesture and memorial to a great author.

As always, great video. I was brought up in Barnsley, Darton actually. Old No. 7 was one of my regular stops back in the 70s along with the King George, Royal Hotel (now called White Horse?), Corner Pin and the Fitzwilliam (closed for many years now), among others. I can still remember standing outside the Bodega (Chennels) in my school uniform from Holgate after my last A level exam, in 1971, waiting for it to open. Happy days. Keep up the good work.

I’m a Southener from Sussex but have been living in the Barnsley area and married to a Barnsley lad for 44 years and Barnsley is the best place I know, as James has said many times, the people are brill and so friendly , I think Barnsley deserves cult status 🥰

Barnsley is a superb town. We go for Saturday neeeet aaart. Never any trouble. People always very friendly. Ladies always class. Unlike Huddersfield which has become deserted due to the proliferation of some very dodgy people. Hope Barnsley never allows those sorts of troubles to happen because once it takes hold there’s no going back. Keep up the great work Barnsley….👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

James I am so impressed with Barnsley so many people and all happy. it's no not like that where I come from, 'Birkenhead' where you're always thinking there's going to be trouble, and they're usually is. Looked like a cracking day out James. One thing that stood out to me, aside the friendliness of the people was the overall cleanliness of the streets compared to where I'm from. I'm from York and the council need to pull their socks up, the streets are very mucky and a bit of an embarrassment.

I’m sad to admit this but I’m a bit ashamed of myself I’ve always had this bias about Barnsley and thought of it as a bit of a rough down on its luck northern town but you’ve massively opened my eyes with this post Barnsley’s looks to be an amazing place with a thriving vibrant pub culture and an actually a very lovely town centre I’ve been a massive fan of your page since right near the beginning but this has massively opened my eyes to the fact I have prejudice I’m gonna make it my mission to have a weekend in Barnsley by the end of the summer Another bloody fantastic video.well done buddy

Thank you so much for this video and well done. I'm a Barnsley lad and you've done the best job I've seen of promoting our town. I'm in my late 50s now and this scene just isn't my thing anymore but it's great to see everyone having fun and enjoying themselves and Barnsley town centre looks rather magnificent. If Barnsley council had any sense they'd put you on their payroll and have you promoting the town. How about a few more videos filming the beautiful suburbs and villages. Cawthorne is the obvious choice. Well done mate. You've done more good for Barnsley in 46 minutes than the council have done in 46 years. I've been reading all the comments from people and you've done the town proud. Let's pull down that statue of Dickie Bird and replace it with one of you lol. All the best.

Hi James, great to see you out and about enjoying yourself and socializing in your home town, your love of and pride in the place is infectious and I have now added it to my list of days out to do on my tick list !! I have to say most of the music featured was definitely not my cup of tea (your tastes must be much wider than mine!) but I agreed re Hannah Rowe, I will also check her out online. I had to skip forward through the Metallica tribute band, I couldn't name one of their songs and couldn't tell if it was distorted or not - horrible noise !!! ... HOWEVER ... as you enjoyed the vibe of a busy town that hasn't always had good press in the past, with music everywhere inside and outside venues, I think you would enjoy the Margate Soul Festival which takes place on the first weekend in August each year. I've been most years since it started 20 years ago and can only recall one day when it wasn't hot & sunny ! Great vibes, most people 'our age' and a wide variety of musical styles all over the town from classic soul to R'n'B, jazz to reggae, disco to house and much more, all in a wonderful setting by the sea ! Check it out online,I think it would make a great weekend away for you and Helen and you wouldn't have to worry about grabbing one of the hard to find hotel rooms either !!! Saturday & Sunday daytimes are the best parts, so maybe drive down on Friday and back on Sunday evening margatesoulfestival.co.uk/

Well what a fantastic day out ! - The lady that said Sheffield needs to take note is right, so does Donny as its gone down the pan since I moved to Donny from Sheffield over 35 years ago. We often come to Barnsley shopping as its brilliant compaired to Doncaster Market which isn't half as big as it used to be. The streets look clean and everyone so friendly and enjoyed a fab day out which must have put so much money in the local businesses - Well Done Barnsley for such a fantastic event. 👍👏👏- Shame Helen couldn't make it

That brought back some memories, me and my mate used to sack off college at lunchtime and go to the Chinese for the lunchtime set menu and then spend the rest of the afternoon in the No7 until closing time (when they closed in the afternoon) and I remember summer Friday nights being mobbed like the video, great times

Top tip - if you want to get served in a really busy pub, don't get your elbows up and start waving a twenty at the staff while shouting, all you do is make eye contact with someone behind the bar, smile and say "Hiya". You'll be next. Ex pub manager here.

Barnsley, Wow! What a transformation. I visited my Granny in 1969 when I was 14 and I remember catching a glimpse through an open pub door of a dark, smoky public bar with Barnsley Bitter pumps on the bar. It was known as "muckiest 'ole in Yorkshire" back then due to the coal mining, and her dad and brothers were miners around the early 1900s. I went back for a few days in 1977 when she died and had a good few pints of Tetleys in the Wheatsheaf with my Dad and Brother-in-law. I called in briefly in 1983, just passing through and not much had changed. Having seen your vlog I definitely need to come back!

Me and our lass sometimes go to The Dale in Worsborough dale on a tuesday night for rock and roll night and we always say that there is still a great community feel in Barnsley like old days. great place

That place has changed so much I don't think I'd be able to find me way around, there used to be a Fashion Store called Monkey down a Snicket (there's a word for ya) opposite No:7s I think it was and when I was holding some folding I used to travel up from the Midlands to bulk buy some clothes, it was a great shop.
