He seized his chance to become a professional actor, and neutralised his accent to broaden his range. I recall seeing him play a gay Londoner in the late 70s, and having a 'blimey, it's him!' moment, so different was he to the scrawny northern kid remembered from Kes. His career has been patchy since then. He usually acts as *Dai* Bradley to avoid confusion with the older Yorkshire-born actor of the same name (who's best known for Argus Filch in the Harry Potter films).

'Why I oughtta . . . give my Oscar to, eh, David - "Dai" - Bradley !' John in-his-dreams Wayne. 'Kes', without doubt, the greatest British film ever made; and could never be reproduced and nor should it ! It is a real 'time-capsule' movie. David's acting, as many others in the film, was superlative; as was the script. [As said to be by a Northerner, as coins spilled from my pocket in a bar, 'Eh-up lad, tuck in brass!' ]

Barnsley has its rough spots, granted, but then I've lived in Oxford too and its rough spots are far worse. There is an underclass of drug users and general decay in every urban area in England, not forgetting Wakefield of all places. Visit Worsbrough mill museum or Locke park. Take in one of the finest Town halls in Yorkshire, if not the north. The market is still visited by coach loads of shoppers on days out. Its been around longer than the Domesday book and has a unique and proud culture..

I must admit I hated the film Kes. I saw it when I was about 13, at school. At that time my feelings of injustice were pretty strong, and still are, so when I saw Kes I walked away from the film hating and despising pretty much all the adults in the film. I need to watch the film again, so see if my initial reactions were correct. The only good souls in the film were Billy and the Falcon, as far as I remember. And if someone had killed my pet Falcon, I'd have burned their house down.....See? Even now, 43 years after I saw it, I'm angry......Which I suppose was the whole point of the film. It succeeded in that.

To be honest i would give barnsley a miss mate i was born in wakefield (next town to barnsley about 7 miles away) and after margaret thatcher closed down the coal pits the place became a drug infested dive and its worse now. There are much nicer places in yorlshire to visit i would reccomend "skipton", "york", "keighley" they are nice towns but seriously barnsley isnt the place it once was.

@AntPDC4 жыл бұрын
@@Teeb2023 I'm not appalled, merely dismayed. Your comment was pretty benign, if badly spelled. But the other negative comments here with regard to David's speaking voice is an ugly reminder of 1970's "up north" types - you know, the chippy, resentful attitude disguised as working class pride. In truth, that kind of Marxist bigotry was always intended to squash personal aspiration, ambition - to imprison people forever in their class identity. As a kid I was told to "learn my place" by socialist totalitarians in my school. And BTW, David is not remotely "posh" - his training at drama school in London merely taught him to speak in a manner comprehensible to a wider audience.
@Teeb20234 жыл бұрын
@@AntPDC You're reading into a very light-hearted comment, way, way too much. My mispelt "awfly" was quite intentional, to convey a slightly comical pronunciation, along the lines of Fawlty Towers' residents and their terribly posh voices. No offence was in any way intended. The little "smiley" at the end was put there specifically to highlight the tongue in cheek nature of the comment. I'm surprised you missed it.
