Barong Dance in Bali (Scary - real trance and animal behaviour!)

All cultures and religions have their own version of an ancestral combat between good and evil. Balinese Hinduism is no exception, with the fight between Barong (the lion looking figure) And Rangda (the female, white figure). The first represents the good, while the other is named the queen of the "leyaks" - men, whose spirit can be detached from the body and travel at night in pursue of evil deeds. The fight is staged in ceremonies all around Bali, and this one was filmed in Padang Bai on invitation by Pak Widana from Widana dive services (widana-dive.co.uk).
Local people get carried away during the ceremony and some get into trance, crying, screaming, or imitating animals. There are no actors in here, nor it is a staged tourist performance. All was captured during one ceremony, and it's as raw as it can be.
Camera used was Nikon D850, on Ronin S gimbal, and there was a lot of luck not to damage it, sometimes.

In Bali, this one in the video, is not just a dance. It's a ritual with so much meaning to it... usually performed during an important holy day in Balinese Hindu calendar...there are so many offerings prepared, priests are gathering chanting the mantra, Barong and Rangda represent the king of the spirits and also the demon queen (p.s the good over evil). the performance is not for entertainment but rather a sequence of ritual which is done to gather the deities and all of thy guardians.. there are hundreds of ceremonies in Bali with different types of rituals depending on the purpose of the ceremony. Mostly are done to keep the yin and yang or the Balinese calls it as Rwa Bhineda (spiritual harmony)

We have similar religious tradition in India... I m from Uttarakhand ( India) where it is practiced ,we call it "Jagar".As a ritual, Jagar is a way in which gods and local deities are woken from their dormant stage. The ritual is connected to the idea of divine justice and is practiced to seek penance for a crime or to seek justice from the gods for some injustice . Music is the medium through which the gods are invoked. Each family has its own Kul Devta / Kul Devi.. I visited Bali in April, it is so beautiful. I have fallen in love with Bali❤️

The trance part reminds me a lot of the italian cultural and mythological phenomenon of tarantism, in which people who were believed to have been bitten by the "taranta" (mostly latrodectus tredecimguttatus or lycosa spiders but it's actually a mythological figure associated with a disease whose symptoms include shaking, nausea and local pain) had to be cured with the subject dancing on a particular kind of music (the "tarantella"), played with instruments like violins and tambourines by local musicians. This music used to induce the subject to a trance in which he/she followed rhythmical and repetitive paths of steps and acted like an animal, usually imitating the "taranta" itself. The dance could last from two to six days, in which the subject was looked after by his/her family and peers. Some of the these people's actions look a lot like the actions of the "tarantati". Those similarities reveal how ancestral is the power of music and dance, beyond any culture.

What a precious clip as it gave us a peek into an ancient culture that’s still alive. I actually moved to tears while watching the real trance state the people were in. I have personally experienced being in a trance while dancing to ritualistic music. It’s an ecstatic experience that’s indescribable, it felt like I was being taken over by a divine force that’s existence itself. It’s deeply emotional, animal like and healing. If I tried to fight it and not surrender, it could turn scary for me. Please let go of judgement as you have to experience it to understand it. Thank you for posting this video 🙏🏼💗

This is based on ancient ceremony. In old black and white footage from the 1920's, no observers are seen laughing or mocking. The dancers in trance are supported physically, and gently brought out of trance with incense. It's sad to see this disrespect as the result of modern invasion and influence from foreigners.

We have very similar traditions in Myanmar. Many people believe there are spirits who look after them so they hold festivals like this for the spirits. People get into trances & believed to be possessed by spirits of humans & mythical creatures. Once, our neighbor's daughter who was a young lady got possessed by a creature that is a combination of a snake & a dragon. She rolled around in the mud & completely lost herself. I actually come from a family of strong believers and have seen many of my family members get into trance like state where they loose control of their body & mind, wouldn't remember what happened etc.. My mum thought they were BS & never got affected.

In black culture/church because we believe so much in Christianity and the Holy Spirit, the people who are crying we would call them people who caught the Holy Ghost. There’s yelling, crying, running, passing out, speaking in tongues and praise dancing. As a young person I always thought it was funny as well as frightening when church and family members around would catch it. I now see it as a form of high praise to GOD, and I wish to experience catching the Holy Ghost because it can be life changing.

@@torrefrancajaphet4332 I’m not sure what a "Kumalendi spirit" is, but I’ve grown up with these people from little to adult age and if you’re insinuating something evil, I don’t believe it to be true in my experience. Speaking in tongues in my church is the Holy Spirit using those people to communicate to the lord, and I was frightened when I was smaller because it’s very chaotic if you’re in a room full of people who feel the spirit in them. There’s no voodoo or evil gain if, again, that is what you’re insinuating.

All these invisible beings are the servant of Gods who always guard (Bhatara/ Dewa) as you can see the sacred object brought on their head. I have some doubts: the spirits that possess people in trance demonstrate intense hunger and thirst. Would they be spirits that could not completely disentangle themselves from human nature and because of that, have not yet reached the spiritual realm? Or do they carry some kind of remorse and because of that they are subjected to extreme senses of hunger and thirst (like the preta in Thai mythology)? I wanted to understand better.

In the Islamic tradition, its forbidden to invite or consort with demons. There's a veil between Humans and Jinn. Music also isn't permitted precisely because of its trance like effect and vehicle for programming a human. Only a "daf" (drum like) is allowed on special occasions. It wasn't easy it extract it from my life as I loved it but cannot describe the clarity of mind and space in the consciousness it freed when I stopped. Having said this, Music is ubiquitous.

It's a ritual with so much meaning to it... usually performed during an important holy day in Balinese Hindu calendar...there are so many offerings prepared, priests are gathering chanting the mantra, Barong and Rangda represent the king of the spirits and also the demon queen. the performance are not for entertainment but rather a sequence of ritual which is done to gather the deities and all of thy guardians.. there are hundreds of ceremonies in Bali with different types of rituals depending on the purpose of the ceremony. Mostly are done to keep the yin and yang or the Balinese calls it as Rwa Bhineda (spiritual harmony)

They're in a trance like state - some may even not know how to dance, but the spirit dances through them. The way they're taken by the spirit isn't often peaceful, and some don't like and feel ashamed of behaving this way.

Barong, Rangda and all of this happened when Indonesia was part of Akhand Bharat, or the Indian Empire in its glory. This was land without population when the Indians created it, that is why Buddhism and Hinduism are common in East and south-east Asia because it was part of India before others invaded India. It could all be such a greater county today if it was one.

Im so sorry, im a balinesse and i cant agree with this statement, barong and rangda is ancient culture even before hinduism come to bali this culture have been all in place, and after hinduism comes to bali all the priest teaching and connecting all balinese ancient culture with hinduism. And bali never be a part of indian empire. We accept india hinduism, but never change our ancient culture.

@@satriakokar820 ok, History can be different for different people, That's how I know it. But we can never say that another's history knowledge is wrong because even if it would be modified none of us were present alive at that time and we never saw anything. It is the ancient scriptures that decide and they can be modified/written by anyone in a million years.

@@aadi5277 yeah thats right, we doesnt know what happen for the past million years, but when some foreingner saw what u type here, they might have another perception about that and spread it without being clarify by balinese people itself. Being balinese and brings our pride to be cultured people sometimes going so worst if they doesnt understand it, and sometimes we all have bullied cause we still obeyed our ancient culture. And u just type bali is part of indian? Thats hurt me though but we are still a familly by religion but for historical we different and lot of differences.

You're listening to over 10 centuries of developing that music and those Gamelan instruments specific to Bali, it is an entire culture to learn to play these, children start at a young age. This a monumental culture, national cultures are extremely important and globalism is a major enemy trying to destroy local cultures.
