Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment, Wood Preserver & Universal Preserver. What's the difference?

I bought a pressure treated summerhouse last Summer and wanted to choose the most appropriate ongoing wood treatment. Looking at all the options available in the shops I was somewhat at a loss choosing the right product. This video has made it all quite clear. I will use the wood protective treatment, which would appear to be all I need. Pity the clear one doesn't provide UV protection as that was the preferred option. Thanks.

Hi there, glad this was some help. There is also the option of the Barrettine Log Cabin Treatment. It is a clear coating that does offer some UV protection and if not too late, would be ideal for your summerhouse.

I put on the protector first by mistake on untreated oak logs. Is it to late to put preserve after???

I get it. The protector has a lot more wax and UK protection pigment in a darker colour than clear. The preserver is like a traditional 3 in 1 wood preserver, with some wax which will wear away in a year to cause UV damage.

I'm just building a couple of gates using untreated PAR pine. I want the finish to be a solid grey, not showing knots etc. What Barrettine product(s) would you recommen?

If its for an outdoor structure how do you suggest the timber is under 18% mc?!!!!! Its more likely to be around 25%.

Can you put a Matt finish product over the wood preserver ?

This would all come down to the particular top coat which is being used. The premier wood preserver contains wax, so if you are looking to paint over the top in a matt finish, I would recommend the premier universal preserver. When applying a preserver, followed by a top coat, its is always better to stick to the same brand. E.G - Barrettine with Barrettine, Cuprinol with Cuprinol. If you want to apply stain, is it correct to apply it before you apply any of the protecting/preserver products?

If you are applying a stain over the top then it must be the Barrettine Premier Universal Preserver as this one is wax free. The Wood Protective treatment and the normal Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver are heavily wax enriched and will repel the stain.

@@NeutronParadigm No, the wood preserver has to go on first as it needs to penetrate into the grain to protect the timber. As long as it is the Universal which is wax free, that will be perfect!!

Yep! 3 coats would be sufficient or 2 coats and Barrettine Log Cabin Treatment for more durability.

I am due to get a new log cabin delivered and erected in the next couple of weeks and I can’t guarantee the weather. What is your recommendation on an initial treatment to keep the moisture away until dry enough to do the job properly?

Barrettine does not recommend applying any of their products in temperatures below 10 degrees and when the moisture content of the wood is higher than 18%. It is very difficult at this time of year to apply any liquid products outside. When it gets a little warmer then you can apply the Barrettine premier Wood Preserver which is a wax-enriched preserver. You can then apply oil over the top. Hope that helps.

I have a treated timber fence since 5 years ago, I can see a bit of mould in some places, what should I do first? I am putting a log cabin next to it in May, just waiting for better weather to do it, but I need to do the fence first, can you give me some advice? Thanks

We would recommend a good wash down with a mould and mildew remover such as Barrettine's and from there re-coating with the Wood Protective Treatment which could also be used on the new summerhouse so 2 birds 1 stone. If the New summerhouse is NOT pressure treated or pre-treated then It would be x2 coats of Preserver and x2 Coats of Wood Protective Treatment. I hope that's helps!

Hi I've had a table made for lounge and they have stained it with barrettine dark oak stain wood protective ,is it safe because it's exterior use and its in doors ?

We would never advise using this product inside as it contains lots of chemicals that protect against mould, algae, etc. I would recommend sanding the table back to bare wood and using an alternative product that is suitable for interior use. I hope that helps!

What is the best system for tannalised wood that will be in contact with the ground?

The Ideal system is to use the Wood Preserver to fill the timber with active protection and then seal it in with the wood protective treatment. This keeps all the nasties out and if any do manage to get in, the preserver prevents anything from growing. Protected inside and out!

Thanks for your question. The Barrettine Premier Universal Preserver is wax free so this product can be painted or stained over. The Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver is Wax & Resin enriched so can be used as a stand-alone product but not painted over. The Wood Preservers penetrate much deeper into the grain than the Wood Protective Treatment does. The Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment is the perfect product for your Gazebo but can't be used on decking. You would need the premier Wood Preserver for this project.
