I had bad Ujoints (94ZJ) on my front axle. To remove them you need to pull the hubs, and with 185k on them I figured they’ve lived a good life and changed them out. While I was at it I replaced the brakes and rotors and used all new bolts and fasteners. Thank you for all your videos, they’ve helped out immensely!!

Use plenty of rust-eating lube, and clean the exposed ends of the 3 long bolts holding the hub to the steering knuckle. Use a small wire brush, and lube the again. Let it soak, don't rush it. If you can, use a ratchet or boxed end wrench to remove these bolts. The reason being, if they start to seize, you'll feel it, and can simply tighten them a bit, then back them out more. If you break one of these bolts, the job gets a lot harder and more expensive.

LOL on that axle bolt removal! MAN I thought that last bolt was going to strip, but that socket held on. I like that you show the torque specs while putting the job back together, even though as mechanics, we know when it's time to stop!
@barricadegarage53615 жыл бұрын
That was partly because I was too lazy to walk back to my Jeep and get the big impact. I hammer hard on that stubby impact every day and it knows how to roll with the punches taking out a good 85% of fastners I put it up against. DIYers love to use torque wrenches so just because its something I dont often do, ill still post the specs on things I feel important enough to because im considereate of certain veiwers that might want that info

My 94 ZJ came from Canada and those axle nuts were rusted so bad, after soaking it with PB Blaster overnight still nothing I had could budge it smh. I had to make a trip to get a Bauer 1/2 corded impact gun and it came right off. Torque specs are over rated on it but still has more then anything I had in my box. Great video and information.

I just put the same MOOG HUBS on mine. Broke 2 13 mm regular sockets on the hub bolts, had to go buy 12 point IMPACT SOCKET SET. It's the 3rd time I have replaced them, ZJ has 182,520 miles on her. YOU BE WORKIN THAT SMALL IMPACT HARD SON, LOL. Did you see Milwaukee came out with a MONSTER 1 INCH IMPACT ? It's like a GRAND, WOW.

Thanks as always for the videos, I actually have been puttin this job off. I have one Moog wheel hub assembly but I see now, without an impact wrench, that wheel hub nut ain't never coming off. I tried and bent a breaker bar, penetrating oil doesn't help so I'm going to be purchasing a Milwaukee M18. But my question is, can you just replace one wheel hub or is it better to do both?
@barricadegarage53615 жыл бұрын
You can do it with a good breaker bar while the tire is still on the ground but I support your decision to just go ahead and get an impact wrench. As a ZJ owner youbwont regret it. The big one I used in this video was the older 1st generation m18 2763. And I recommend replacing both front hubs at the same time
@DOUBLEXXCEL5 жыл бұрын
@@barricadegarage5361 Ok, I'll look for another one and get the M18, when I saw you struggling with the stubby, I already knew I'm shooting for the bigger one.

Hey Sandmann-Off-road, I was about to email BG with a question about brake hardware on my ‘99 XJ- it looks like his ‘96 Grand Cherokee is the same knuckle- real confusing with the tin hardware clips- filed my knuckle groves out- was looking for smooth surface for pads to slide on. Do you know of correct hardware kit?
@jeffhale22784 жыл бұрын
@@YOUZTUBE2000 The 90 - 01 XJ uses the same knuckle and hubs as the 93 - 98 Grand Cherokee ZJ. It's a good bet the brakes are the same also.
