Try putting the hub bolts back in so they are about 1/8” from being bottomed out (full thread engagement) you can put the socket on or use a drift in the center of the bolt to knock the hub out. This will prevent you from beating the hell out of the steering knuckle and ball joints and the force applied pushes the hub out more evenly with less effort.

My guess is they were rusty or damaged the first time the hubs were replaced by the previous owner. The Jeep wasn’t a daily driver for me so I didn’t feel it necessary to purchase them

Your not "supposed" to let it hang by the hose you're absolutely correct. However, I've NEVER had a hose break because of it.
