The best ever, great to see American ball players from their journey through high school, college, minors and then to the majors. Thank you for posting this.

Yea, I know. Nobody knew they were going to come down on players who were using PEDs. In the 1990s everyone in including the media turned a blind eye. There was no testing. Then around 2003 their tune changed and MLB eventually had testing a couple years later. So Bonds got tangled up midway through his “hall of fame “ career before and after the "powers that be" decided to come down hard on steroids. Clemens , Bonds, McGwire all came in the mid 80s, they were the best high school players in their area, they became all Americans in college, zip through the minors and they became all stars in the majors. He was amazing to watch.

I was at the mall in Scottsdale Az back in 2007 and I saw a guys sitting looking so sad, I stopped and asked him why he was looking so sad, He said, his wife told him he was saving money. I asked, how so? she’s shopping for all the sales. We laughed. We also talked about sport science, we both agreed that players in 10 years will throwing about 105+ and they will start looking like football players. Last years there was a list of 5 Yankees that were bigger than the NY Giants’ O Line. Thought back then MLB did have some country strong players like Bo jackson and some others but no comparison to the players of today. When Bonds first came in the majors, players thought lifting weights would throw off a players hitting. Bonds was surrounded by old school players like Willie, his father and others. Players were much more skinnier back then, though they were some players in the earlier 90’s that got good fast and out of nowhere, like those players down in Houston in the early to mid 90’s, of course in the mid late 90’s things got out of hand. Bonds was on Roy Firestone Show when he asked Bonds, your season was full of injuries, are you getting close to retiring in the next couple years. Bonds said to Roy Firestone, I got big plans, I am not done yet, that following year he hit 49 homers, the most in his career up to that point. Whats interesting, at that time Sammy, McGwire and Griffey was hitting 60 Hrs a year. Bonds would be prefect for todays game, just hitting homers ain’t cutting it’s, how many pitches you take per at bat, your strike out rate to walks. Even in his early years his walks doubled vs his strike outs. He had always hit for average. He would at the top in every category except strikeouts. Slugging/OBP/OPS, he doesn’t give up any part of the plate. It probably cost him more games by getting hit on the elbow, standing on top of the plate, which later on he started wearing the guard. Lifting weights in baseball is the way of life now, everyone has a fitness/trainer, most have a nutritionist and a swing coach. Hunter Pence was on the MLB channel last year, he said their sports science departments and the analytics department are training the trainers to coach players not to extend their arms. He said, keeping your hands close to your body when hitting, the ball will travel farther with less effort. Like a golf swing, body and hands should be in concert. Bonds swing is the one reason he can pull a inside pitch and keep it fair, while standing almost on top of the plate. There are no pills or cream that can make you hit, if he was playing today I think he would consistently put up numbers like 40 a year, hitting for average and walks. No one stands close to the plate anymore, IMO they are giving up way too much of the plate. Carlos Correa who had been in a couple of negotiations, broke it down how GMs view a great player, and It’s on youtube…making pitchers, pitch down the middle of the plate if you want that big contract. Everyone wanna extents their arms, the science guys want to change that but I imagine after doing something one way for so long, thats not the easiest thing. On a side note. Johnny Bench was on Jay Leno, and Leno asked Bench a series of questions about the state of baseball and at the end Leno asked, I heard you just had a baby at almost 60. How did that happen? Bench laughed and yelled, PED’s baby! Preforming Enhancing Drugs!

@@hatcher2262 yea well Bonds stood close to the plate with those elbow pads, ( did you see Harper get hit in the elbow yesterday). He also went to the maple bats, something introduced to him by Joe Carter. The maple bats have taken over the game. Also the expansion brought in three NL teams in the 90s and two in the NL West with that watered down pitching. I too lived in Scottsdale AZ for a few years, and Arizona as a whole I for nine years. I love the spring training, and of course went to the Giants one in Scottsdale. Also I saw Bonds when he was skinny back in Pittsburgh at three rivers in 1992, and in the first inning he hit it in the upper deck. My mothers side of the family is from Pittsburgh, so we saw him. He was the best in the 90s. And yes players in the 80s and the early 90s were skinnier. Yea Bonds started to get jealous of Caminitti, Bagwell, Dykstra ( who almost won that MVP in 93) , but Bonds won it. So he was feeling the peer pressure to stay on top. They ignored his 40/40 season in 1996, then the ignored his 400/400 in 1998, and then Bonds went into the lab. There was no testing, so I don’t judge it the same way as someone trying to beat a test. After the McGwire/Sosa 98-99 , he was like. I’ll show all of you! And he did. Bonds choked up, but yea his ability to keep the inside pitch fair was insane. I think Trout is just as amazing, and there are no words to describe Ohtani

Without steroids bonds would have hit maybe 500 home runs. Ken Griffey jr with steroids would have hit 800 but ken was injured all the time later in his career something bonds didn’t have to worry about because he was cheating and breaking records in his late 30s. Best ever? GTFO

@@westhoodqualzini7884 maybe 500? GTFO here, u casual he had over 400 homeruns before started taking steroids and he still had 10 years left also I could give a shit about ken Griffey jr the man is by far the most overrated baseball player of all time Barry’s best pre steroid seasons wipes the floor with any season ken Griffey jr has ever had 1993 Barry Bonds ..336 BA .458 ON-Base .677 Slugging 1.136 OPS (206 OPS +) Led The NL in Homers and RBI’s with 30 Stolen bases and a gold glove 1997 Ken Griffey jr .304 BA .382 ON-Base .646 Slugging 1.028 OPS (165 OPS +) Led The AL In Homers and RBI’s with 15 stolen bases and a gold glove Ken Griffey jr is a complete creation of playing in that embarrassment of a Mariners ball park and getting to play the rest of the AL. Barry bonds had a better eye, more power, hit for average was a all time great base stealer and gold glove left fielder while being impossible to pitch to. Ken Griffey jr was just a good outfielder with power in the AL and That’s evident in his OPS+ which is Park adjusted OPS.
