A followup on the "depth of why this works" would be fantastic! I'm already exploring other ways to move voicings with the 6ths and 10ths in mind.

Hiiiii, i have my interpretation of it :)) So he says that the movement is V - I in F. I see it as a C Altered sound to F, and I say C Altered because: If you get the first shape (Eb, E, Ab, C) and Invert it (to C, E, Ab, Eb), considering that C has to be the bass (cuz it's a V - I in F and C is the dominant), then the Ab and Eb make the #5 and #9 of a C Altered chord. Now the issue with this is that there's no Bb in the C to make it a true dominant, but I think that's okay cuz it's role is to have an Altered dominant *sound* - which I think it does well So we know where the notes come from, let's take it back to the origional shape (Eb, E, Ab, C) - this is the key to the movement! *The melody is just him playing around the C diminished scale* So the bottom goes down the diminished scale from the Eb and the top plays a melody from the diminished, which resolves to the C6, which is just an upper extension for a Fmaj9 (aka tonic). This means that you can play around with it some more, so what I did was keep everything the same but changed the top melody slightly, so it plays an inclosure on the C (specifically C, Db, Eb, Db resolve to C) (Also something neat I tried was to change the E of the resolving C6 chord to a D, giving me the 13 of F - which I think sounds pretty cool!)

If I had to hazard a guess as to why it works, a simple answer would be the voice leading on the final chord, cuz they all only move a semi tone to resolve (Bb -> A, Ab -> G, Db -> C). But if you wanna be surgical with it (and a bit more finicky), you can see it as resolving to C6 (cuz it's the 6th on the 5th of F) and the movement ends on a Db minor 6 (Bb, E, Ab, Db) and that resolves to C6 cuz it's the 6th diminished on the flat 2, and the C6 it resolves to is just an upper extension of Fmaj9 I'm pretty secure with this reasoning, tho the point of barry harris is that you don't treat each chord on its own, rather a whole movement. So each chord that the movement makes as a consequence of the movement is irrelevant, I only decided to look at the last chord because that's ultimately what resolves to C6 (ergo the reason the movement works at all), but in general treat them as movements, not individual chords to be analysed individually.

It's pretty long winded cuz it's hard to explain over text, but if you have any questions for any words I used (eg. Whats the 6th diminished on the flat 2?), this video has all the answers kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYLKc6GebtuInassi=ukXEH7S_zkPSqrVk Other than that, I appreciate this was a rlly dense heavily worded explanation so I'm very glad to try answer any questions you could have :)

Hi Greg, hope you are well. I am an intermediate classical piano student, however I opted for the genre, as I have other goals. My doubt is about the REAL BOOK by HAL LEONARD standards, I managed to rescue references and I have seen bad and good comments. On the contrary, at Berklee College, first semester of jazz piano, they ask the students for the REAL BOOK SIXTH EDITION. Is it legitimate and does it make sense to buy the REAL BOOK SIXTH EDITION?

Umm. Do you realise that a green keyboard with no contrast between black and white keys makes your tutorial extremely difficult to follow? I'm all for being hip and fresh (the green keyboard guy maybe?) but there's a very good reason for the contrast design of a piano keyboard. A visual aid that is incredibly useful for learning shapes. Maybe a phase or something. Here, you've essentially made the piano a green, fretless guitar. Paint your hair or something instead. Also, why call them Barry Harris voicings? Maybe due to the fact that he taught them? If anything they should be called Tatum/Shearing/Powell voicings. I definitely appreciate Barry's playing and his fantastic teaching and sharing of his information. He's at pains to say.. 'this is what Bud did!'. It's kinda like calling a pentatonic run on sax a "Brecker line" when Coltrane was doing it in '62. You dig where I'm coming from here? Small points but obvious ones.

Yeah I getchu with the "Barry harris voicing" part, I call them that cuz not only is it what it's largely called by the community (and so I gotta look up "Barry harris" to get this stuff) but also because I feel like he rlly popularised it with his teachings. I feel like even if the Bebop scale was around him, he rlly found a system that could be tought to anyone with the 6th diminished scale

Agreed the colour is very odd, or rather the lack of contrasting colours. The reason pianos have black and white keys is that the contrast serves as a visual aid in quickly identifying the notes. Changing up the colours can be fun, but having the black and white keys the same colour makes no sense to me. No offense to Weeklypiano - you produce some quality content - but the colour is a little perplexing.

@@cabijista1 thank you, of course there is no offense, I also like this channel very much. Sorry if my messages were too short, but i am not good in english. For me the problem is that it is more difficult to see the key pressed, because the colour is added by the editing software. We can see in the varnish reflection the original color. Anyway, it is not very important.
