Barry Island Locos.2004; where are they now?

We pay a days visit to the shed at Barry Island Railway in June 2004. GWRs 5199 is in steam so we follow her from the Island, down to the Waterfront and Woodhams Halt. On the day of my recording, the paddle steamer "Waverley" sails into the docks at Barry and we also have a group of visitors
taking a tour of the depot. Finally Jane Hutt our local AM join us for a discussion regrading the future of the railway. Now the depot is full of TfW
FLIRTS for at least another year....so what's next ?

I remember when I was a kid, they used to host Day out with Thomas events up until 2008.

Such a pity that the heritage railway at Barry is no longer open.

Let's hope TfW are only storing their FLIRTS there until fully utilised.

@@TheMichaelWilcock2016Railways Hopefully, it was a great attraction, especially when it was run from the shed at the Island end. I'm not sure what is going on with those FLIRT at the moment. They were supposed to have been in operation on the Pontypridd routes initially, back in March. As far as I'm aware no crew have been trained on them yet.

This has triggered some happy memories. Like many valleys kids that grew up in the 1970s, I went on day excursions to Barry Island, and the coach would park next to Dai Woodham's scapyard. As the years went by, the lines of redundant locos became shorter. I had no idea at the time that this was good news, but later, when I started to visit heritage lines, I realised that many of the locos I was admiring were those very same engines I used to wonder at and walk amongst on those summer days on The Island. Do you think heritage trains will ever again run to/from Barry Island?

At the moment TfW are using the site to store their FLIRTS. Also all the working steam locos have moved away to other preserved railways, so it's just " wait and see"

The last news I heard 2014 was that some were beyond repair however at least three locos have been looked at by heritage railways with the possibility of removal to various sites as a source of smart parts and perhaps a much more derailed inspection But I haven't heard anything in recent times

I wonder what will happen to the rest of the stock now the Barry Tourist railway has closed.

It's only closed whilst the fine details are worked out with TfW about how to continue. There are people down there most days working on the locos so whilst it is closed to the public for now, there are very much things going on behind the scenes

some of the stock is now at the Garw Valley Railway ( 2 steam locos and a 108 DMU )
