As soon as she turned around there was no turning back, Barry was going to kill her even if she pretended to let him go. He's not dumb enough to think she was going to forget about it and she couldn't kill him because she's a cop (Television cop that is, real cops don't care about the law).

No, he was begging for his life. He could have accepted the consequences of his past and gone to jail. He chose to kill, for his own freedom. Asking her to not arrest him was not some noble "I don't want to kill you," it was simply him deciding that her life is worth less than his freedom, but not necessarily worthless.

Since Barry is the main character, we obviously sympathize with his side of the story. But Obviously Moss is doing her job and if she let Barry get away, she's putting other lives in danger and she'd never live with the guilt. Barry just isn't getting a happy ending.
@ladyofrillwater
@ladyofrillwater 5 жыл бұрын
For sure. The problem is that, much like Macbeth is unable to emotionally commit to the evil deeds he commits, Barry is unable to emotionally commit to turning over a new leaf. Macbeth can't internally justify his crimes despite committing them knowingly and willingly, ultimately bringing his own downfall. Barry wants to have his cake and eat it; for all that people call Sally a self-centered character (and she is, dont get me wrong), Barry is probably the most selfish and self-centered character in the show, just in a very subtle, almost childish way. He doesnt want to face the consequences of his actions. He wants to be free from guilt without acknowledging the guilt in a meaningful way and as a result, he's doomed to fail.

My theory as to how Barry came out on top: Barry grabbed the gun and ducked behind the tree at the same time. Not knowing there was imminent danger (probably thinking Barry was running for it) and not having a clear shot, Moss hesitates and doesn't fire. Its only once Barry ducks out from the other side of the tree does Barry fire his first shot, probably hitting moss center-mass, at which point Moss reflexes and fires her weapon, misses, and before she can get another shot off Barry follows up with the two other fatal shots afterward. We're talking about a police officer who is trained to subdue and arrest, only to fire when fired upon, against Barry, a former and decorated Marine who has since become a stone cold killer and assassin who kills without hesitation. Even though Moss having her weapon drawn first should give her the advantage, with the extreme circumstances and strategic planning on Barry's part, its entirely possible for Barry to still realistically come out on top of this exchange of fire. It mostly comes down to reflexes and psychology. Someone who is willing (or is programmed) to pull the trigger and take a human life without hesitation... versus someone who isn't.

@Do it Dex You missed the op's entire point. The theory was, Barry ran behind the tree. The officer believed he was trying to make a dash for it, so she wasn't just going to instantly shoot him, that would be highly illegal. She would look to the right of the tree (her right) because that's the direction he dashed in. Barry instead pops out from the left of the tree (her left) and shoots her. She, seeing this, right before she died would have at least tried to get off a shot or even reflexively shot. Correct me if I'm wrong

Killing her off was a really brave and smart writing move from Alec and Bill. Janice was such a great character who could have easily continued on far into the show. But they respected the character enough to not contrive stupid reasons for her to stay blind or become complicit. She was smart enough to work it out, and had a rigid moral compass which wouldn't have allowed her to keep quiet. The most logical result was exactly this.

Barry's biggest flaw as a character is that he thinks he should be able to atone for what he's done without being held accountable. He doesn't want to apologize and he doesn't really want to change, he just wants to be left alone, which isn't an option when you're a murderer.

A year late, but that's what i really liked about his character, [[spoilers]] in the show's finale, only when he was ready to be held accountable so that Jean wouldn't go to jail was he able to put behind, jean killing him led to the false story that was spread of him pinning Jean as the criminal enabling sally and his son John to live free of his past sins. Even in death, just him being ready to pay for what he's done saved his loved one's lives, although not specifically intended to save then and there.

@The Rue Morgue Why are you sure about that? If she wasn't self absorbed she probably would have noticed she was marrying an ass. Who that guy was never mattered to her, just as long as she got the behavior she wanted from him, and she wanted drama and apologies. Also, I find attributing her negative personality traits from maybe being abused (we know her own memory of events isn't to be trusted), but Barry being traumatized by war and quite blatantly on the spectrum somewhere doesn't enter into your mitigating factors at all. I'm am rooting for Barry over Sally because Barry is trying to better himself and do something good while Sally is trying to look like she is doing something good when she's really just looking for more attention. If Barry achieves his goal he will be a better person. If Sally achieves her goal she will be rich and famous with more assistants to routinely treat like incompetent slaves. I can't imagine in what context I would root for her and her terrible TV show. I'm not only not rooting for her. I want her to fail. I want her to get comeuppance and consider what failings of hers lead her to this place like Barry did in season 1. An evil character trying to be better is far more sympathetic than a selfish character trying to get more attention. She already sold out her principles. Season 2 Sally was likable. When she was full of crap she showed conflict over it. Prediction, her career takes a turn south and Barry gets a big break and she wants him back. Also, her assistant is totally going to bone him.

Anthony Beatty Jesus, you must be really insane if you think actively and directly killing innocent people is the same as just living in country that’s run by a government that lies about killing people.
@trevordavis6830
@trevordavis6830 4 жыл бұрын
Anthony Beatty Yeah it does. If people don’t know about the shady stuff that goes on, then they can’t be responsible for it since their decision is being made under false information. Are you seriously going to blame the shooting of a person on a the guy who tried helping the criminal out emotionally months before the shooting? On top of that, even the people who do know about can’t really do anything about it in the short term. If they leave the country or choose not to vote, the US is proportionally filled with more voters fine with the corruption. The only thing they really can do to stop it is spread awareness or vote to try to get better people in charge of the system. And again, you’re trying to compare a very complex system of unintentional choices to a guy killing a cop who never did anything wrong. In one situation, the shady actions of the government is going to happen no matter what and best people can do to stop is through voting and protests, in the other, there didn’t need to be any death at all. Barry could accepted his responsibility for all the death he’s personally and actively caused and not kill his innocent friend.
@trevordavis6830
@trevordavis6830 4 жыл бұрын
Anthony Beatty Not really, there are plenty of people who either don’t watch the news or what news they watch do purposely distorts the facts to push out a false narrative for their viewers to believe in. If you want to argue that it’s the government, corrupt journalists, etc fault for lying, sure that makes sense. But if a person has no idea that the institution they support is corrupt then they can’t be held responsible.

This entire scene from the vacation started up to its final second felt like I was holding my breath for it all to end, revealing that Barry was just having a nightmare. What's excellent here is that it doesn't do that at all. In fact, the most visceral, terrifying detail is that Barry never wakes up from this because it was all real. Season 1's final episode brought my jaw to the ground. And there's a ton more praise to say with what happens for the rest of the show.

Interesting that in this episode, while you see Sally in bed and hear/see the muzzle flashes in the window, you hear Barry's shots as the more muffled ones. In the next episode's recap of this scene, you hear his gun shots as the more "traditional" movie trope silencer "pew" sound. Just a random observation/nitpick.

I really like how for those scenes which a good outcome for Barry seems like a dream, they don't show it so that the possibility of Barry's inhuman skills could save him is possible and they don't have to actually act it out (which would frankly be impossible for them to choreograph and act it out convincingly). For those who are wondering how he managed to kill her when she was zeroed in with firing stance, Ill script mend for you. Barry leans onto the tree for support with his right hand emotionally devastated. Moss sees the deviation from the safest position of hands in the air, but no one would shoot an emotionally devastated man momentarily losing his posture. Barry still facing away from her grabs the gun and turns to shoot her with backhand-swing of such ferocity that she has no time to react for his reflex is inhuman - like Bruce Lee mixed with a cobra. In turning around to shoot her, his entire body is pivoted and rotated 20 inches out of the line of fire to the right in the direction of the tree. In shock she fires 3 shots that miss to the left. (Loud flashes in the night shine through the house window) (See flash back to this scene as posted by uploader in comments)
