As much as I love Rain Man, directing wise, the real winner wasn't even nominated. Robert Zemeckis for Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Was Rain Man the favorite that night or did this just kinda happen? I can't realistically expect Working Girl to win BP but I'm stunned with RM not being a musical or period piece that it was able to win in an era dominated by 3 hour epics/period pieces.

- _Rain Man_ was the highest-grossing film of 1988 and a hit with critics - Also, it had won the Golden Globe for Best Picture (Drama) - _Working Girl_ won for Best Picture (Comedy)

Even though RAIN MAN is a great film and Picture/Director linkup went as usual, this should have gone to Alan Parker (for having the best effort overall) or Martin Scorsese (who should've won for RAGING BULL and had a pretty decent effort, all the controversy notwithstanding). 1) Alan Parker (best overall, best looking--it won Best Cinematography after all) 2) Charles Crichton (most flavorful effort, even though he had no chance whatsoever) 3) Martin Scorsese (overdue, made even more so in two years, but since this was the film's only nomination, that hurts his chances plus the film isn't exactly accurate in portraying the Son of God Himself) 4) Barry Levinson (even though the film is great story-wise, the direction could've been done by anyone) 5) Mike Nichols (it's a freaking rom-com! from the guy who directed and won for THE GRADUATE) Oh, and where the hell was Robert Zemeckis for WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT? Hands-down the best directorial effort of the year! I really hate it when the Academy just refuses to admit they like a film, shown because ROGER RABBIT won as many Oscars as RAIN MAN and both tied for the most Oscars that year.

I have no idea why Robert Zemeckis was not nominated. I think Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is his best movie. I think he should've won. If Mary Poppins was nominated for both Best Director and Picture, why not Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Robert Zemeckis and Penny Marshall should've been nominated for directing Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Big. Robert Zemeckis should have won Best Director this year. Rain Man is a great movie, but Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is more innovative.

Charles Crichton was sort of odd one out in that list of nominations. I know there’s some controversy over how much he actually directed “A Fish Called Wanda” and how much Cleese did. I suspect, it was the academy sort of giving an honourary nod for all his old Ealing comedy films. He was also nominated for “Best Original Screenplay”(along with Cleese). There’s also the other reason that the Oscar rarely goes to a director for directing a comedy(Woody Allen is one exception for “Annie Hall”).

Wow! I waited so long to see this! Rain Man is such a good movie, but Mississippi Burning is a very well directed thriller, with amazing storyline. I agree with Rain Man winning Best Picture, but Alan Parker should have won Best Director.

Very weak year of nominees. ''Grave of the Fireflies'' was the best motion picture of that year but Americans avoid subtitles like the plague.
@madgang201
@madgang201 10 жыл бұрын
Actually, Americans didn't even knew "Grave of the Fireflies" let alone "Akira" existed. Fireflies didn't get an American release till MUCH later and "Akira" wasn't around for another year. Honestly, I don't see 1988 as a weak year as "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" also came out that year. Personally, because of how big an impact it made on the industry, the animation industry and visual effects, it should'e gotten a Best Picture nomination, but I'm perfectly fine with it winning 4 awards that night.

@Winduct
@Winduct 10 жыл бұрын
rps121 They are by no means bad or weak films but not that great to be nominated for such an award, let alone win. Both films have a 65% on Metacritic and righteously so. That doesn't mean anything but still, not the Best Picture material.
@Winduct
@Winduct 10 жыл бұрын
madgang201 Yes that is true. Anime films were distributed in the U.S. after the success of ''Spirited Away''. ''Who Framed Roger Rabbit'' was a great film and indeed should have been nominated in this category but that still makes 1988 a weak year for film.
