I always found it really surprising that the band including Hogarth went out of their way to completely dismiss the Fish years for a long long time. Hogarth even claimed more than once that he did not like singing Fish songs as he could not identify with them or the lyrics. Rather surprising when we all know that they got some other bloke in to write the vast majority of the lyrics for years afrer he joined. That just doesn't add up. I do still find it amusing that they continue to have a chip on their shoulder and wonder in amazement why they just are not taken seriously enough and ignored. For a start, they could decide to go down another route other than releasing album after album of dull, uninteresting, uninspired tosh. Usually including indecipherable whispers pretending to be vocals. Come on lads you have flogged that dead horse long enough now... Won't be buying another Marillion album as the last one was just bloody insufferable. Thought the recent ones before that were bad enough. Good luck with the book though Mark.

Fear is the best album ever written by marillion in my opinion, and i have bought every record ( and heard it thousand of times) from the band since 1982.

Wrong, you are Wrong! You must have a different set of ears to me,FEAR is a fantastic album and I much prefer the Marillion catalogue post - Fish. Plus you can't really compare the two,as they are different beasts.

Very interesting interview! If I may offer a bit of constructive criticism: on a couple of spots you interrupted Mark when he was about to expand on a thought which promised to be very interesting. I’m thinking it is partially due to you being used to your review monologues, which is understandable. Even if you are going for a more relaxed approach, I would recommend that you let your guests finish their thought.

Marillion is a more refined band nowadays with albums like Brave - afraid of sunlight- FEAR - sounds that can’t be made and Marbles , which all are wonderfully written albums. Yes the first 4 are great and misplaced childhood is still one of my favorite but nostalgia plays a role in all that.

Really enjoyed the interview. F.E.A.R. instantly makes me think of The Blue Nile, with all the deft, quiet passages - beautiful album, and I can't wait to hear the new one. It's nice to see Mark stoked for it as well. Grand job, Barry.

Mark is a top bloke and such an underrated keyboard player. His playing on those early albums got me completely obsessed with the Moog sound until I eventually got a Minimoog of my own. Just For The Record is a high point of his for me, also a very underrated song.

that song has a great keyboard riff - wish they'd revisit it, it's a banger although I guess it's a very personal song from Derek Dick's heart & soul

I am really looking forward to the Holidays In Eden remix. The remixes for Script and Fugazi brought so much out of those albums that I finally enjoy listening to them again, so I hope that extra shine improves Holidays as well. I love the live version they did for the Marillion Weekend 2011, the songs are great for the most part, but the production really let that album down. And March 4th can't come quick enough!

I don't know how strongly H felt about not performing older Marillion in the early years after he (H) joined the band. I saw them across the pond (So. California) on the Holidays in Eden tour and on the This Strange Engine tour (and several more times since), and he sang the heck out of those old Fish-era songs. He clearly had a blast singing "Incommunicado," "Slainte Mhath," "Sugar Mice," and in particular "Garden Party." There's no way he was just gritting it out and pretending to be enthused. Maybe Mark is referring to some other older songs, but the Fish-era songs that I've seen H sing have always seemed 100% sincere. Great interview though. I could watch/listen to Mark talk all day about all things Marillion. I've been on the train since about '88, and what an amazing ride it's been. I hope the lads will keep doing this until they all drop dead. Seriously -- if they're still recording and playing a gig here & there when they're in their 80s or 90s, I'll be in the audience.

I've loved both versions of Marillion since I discovered them, but alas, the predictable genuflection to dumb leftist "causes" like climate change (the most vocal alarmists of which can't stop flying their private jets around the world looking for more ocean-front property to buy) is just cringe-worthy. It just goes to prove that when people are good enough at something to find a wide audience, like these musicians, they end up not being very good at anything else.

It takes me 24 hours to get to a Marillion GIG (From Australia) and I will take ANY Marillion song. Don't go editing the band's live output, it's up to them what they play!! Marillion is Marillion and there should be no issue playing one song or another!!

Mark was about to expand on why “Seasons End” wasn’t next at 14:08 but unfortunately wasn’t able to finish. I’m sure the reason will be explained in other interviews. I’m certainly curious to hear why although we will get both so it’s just a matter of being patient.
