Don't care what people think , but the facts are , Marillion was never as big after Fish , and Fish was never as successful without Marillion.

Marillion were/are a lot happier though. They make a lot more money from far less sales (from a VERY loyal fanbase)

It is very humble of you you to admit that you went on the side of Fish and only later started listening again to Marillions later albums. I say good for you.

Great interview. I’ve been a Marillion fan since the beginning. I was very upset when Fish left and in in truth it took me some time for me to accept Steve. But then I got into the new Marillion, felt in love with Steve as much as I was /am with Fish. Best Prog rock band of all time.

Great interview. If I was to pick 2 albums for someone to listen to and get an idea of what Marillion are about they would be Clutching at straws and Afraid of Sunlight.

Nice picks! I’m weird and quite fond of “This Strange Engine.” It would be a perfect album if Memory of Water was switched out for ANYTHING else, lol.

Super interview and it's sad the way things ended with Fish, sounds like they just needed a decent holiday away from the touring, maybe done their own side projects to let off steam but sometimes you need that bit of friction to make the gems.

Clutching At Straws is a top class album. I have the CD and the original vinyl LP made with the thinnest delrin puck, and now I have the latest 180g double album version remix which I found a bit odd, but ok because it sounds fantastic.

I used to be a huge huge fan with money to burn. Got most of the albums and singles on rare picture discs, gatefold sleeves etc and loads.of them signed too. Honestly hadn't listened to marillion in decades and was clearing out stuff and decided to sell all my marillion collectables. Thing is, I had to listen to them to check for scratches and the like first, and now I'm.back into them 😂

I don't know if Mark will read this, but I want to thank him(and the rest of Marillion) for Sounds That Can't Be Made(especially Sky Above The Rain). It's interesting that Barry mentioned getting off the Marillion train when Fish left, and then getting back on later. I had only owned a few Marillion works(Script, Fugazi, Misplaced, and Brave). Wasn't interested in exploring further. Then, I read some positive reviews for Sounds when it was first released, and decided to buy it(at the Hollywood location of Amoeba). At the time, my mom and step-dad had decided to divorce. I was close to my step-dad. So, I was very sad. I deeply connected to Sky Above The Rain.

It's an interesting story, I hope you feel better now. A lot of people left Marillion when the split came, I'm just so glad to have rediscovered them in about 2012, which is thanks to my brother. I think there one of the best bands out there, still producing outstanding music.

This is so interesting. Yes, I liked Marillion in the Fish days and I also loved Seasons' End and Holidays in Eden after Fish left. I couldn't get into Fish's solo projects, as much as I was desperate to. I couldn't get into Brave and they went under the radar until Marbles, which I sort of liked but never really got too excited about. Then I've left Marillion's new material alone until this new album. Both Murder Machines and Be Hard on Yourself are excellent. So I'm tempted to now to look back at the albums I've missed. I struggled with SH's voice, I don't like it so much as I used to in the early days, that might be the problem. Yet, I'm excited now for the new material.

That is exactly the same as my situation. I seriously stopped listening with Brave but just randomly heard a new song and was super impressed. May have to have a look at some of their newer stuff too!

I have read Mark's book. Very interesting and enjoyable. . I remember hearing the news from Tommy Vance on the Friday Rock Show BBC Radio 1 in Sept 1988, that Fish had left. It was so surprising. I have often wondered why. Mark's account sheds some light on one side of the story. Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws are superb albums. Great to get some insight on their creation.

As an album, Brave is more akin to the classic prog record. No hits, but memorable for all the right reasons, and just about impossible to listen to without playing the whole thing. Perhaps the best work they have done in my humble opinion.

I just happened upon this clip. I loved Marrillion back in the Fish days. I liked Season's End enough to get Holidays in Eden but soon fell off the Marillion wagon. As for Fish, I had Internal Exile which I thought was pretty good but not great. Anyway, I've watched a few your clips in the past. This is a wonderful part 1 interview with Mark Kelly. I am looking forward to part 2 and I will be investigating some more of their work with Steve Hogarth. You have wonderful descriptive and critical skills. Heck, I subscribed. Best wishes and cheers.

Given that Fish and Marillion wouldn't have worked at all after 1988, it's brilliant they've both gone their own ways and produced so much great material on both sides. I've followed probably more on the side of Marillion post-Fish, but acknowledge there's plenty of good Fish post-Marillion material as well.

I saw the Fugazi Tour here in NYC with an audience of about 30 people. One of the best concerts I've ever attended. I love the Fish era material. I have a compilation CD from Racket, sort of a introduction to their later work. Try as I may I just can't get into it.

I quite like Marillion but i just don't 'get' FEAR. I must try harder!! Afraid of Sunlight and Anoraknophobia remain firm favourites. Attended a concert in Southend on the band's last tour which, sorry to say, was poor as Hogarth spent too much time arsing about with a female fan and seemed a little 'tipsy' to us. However i have respect for the band who continued to tour and release albums for many years without the level of success with Fish. The aforementioned FEAR i believe reached no.4 in the album charts so well done for persevering.

Not the first band making an let go to an higly valuable persona and then to regret it, Journey...Van Halen... In that seense music is not of something else, this happends on jobs too. I think that the german part of the business got it right them supporting Fish. But in the end who is lissening to complicated well produced music in these days? Marillion where on its last in anyway as with all those other great bands. RIP

I met Mark Kelly in Boulder before a shoe once. It was my 24th birthday in 2004. I felt like I was meeting one of The Beatles, and I think I freaked the poor guy out hahaha. I'll never forget it though. Marbles tour. That show is still my favorite all time show. They played at a club called the Fox Theater..only about 500 people squeezed in. I was 10 feet from H. One of the best nights of my life. That includes going to Montreal for a weekend.
