Denny Doherty (1940-2007) (lead vocals on this song) was a Canadian (Halifax, NS) singer and songwriter, best known as a member of the folk-rock band The Mamas & the Papas. Born on November 29, 1940, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Doherty began his musical career in the early 1960s. In 1965, he joined The Mamas & the Papas, a group that achieved significant success with hits like "California Dreamin'" and "Monday, Monday." Doherty's smooth tenor voice and harmonizing skills contributed to the band's distinctive sound. Despite internal conflicts within the group, The Mamas & the Papas became one of the most iconic bands of the 1960s. After the group disbanded in 1968, Doherty pursued a solo career and later joined the reformed Mamas & the Papas in the 1980s. Not a capella, but vocal harmony groups. A capella basically means without instruments (the translation is something like 'in the manner of the chapel). The many harmony groups in the fifties through the seventies, and even through the present though less prominent, generally had backing bands or instrumental recordings. There were also a lot of Motown and other black groups that had numerous singers that you saw and a band in the shadows.

When John Phillips told the other 3 that he wrote a song about Monday, they thought he was crazy. Who would want to hear that, they said. Turned out to be the group's biggest hit. This was their second big hit, Spring of 1966. the Beatles started the long hair...this was really not "Hippie Music" per say, [the term "Hippie" didn't come into play until about 1967]. In the late 1950's "they" were called "beatniks" lol. But the Mamas and Papas were a link evolving into that...the California "Laurel Canyon" sound. Greenwich Village of NYC was full of folk musicians, they all knew each other or of each other in the early 1960's..future popular singers/songwriters, members of the groups including members of the Mamas and the Papas that formed folk rock type music including [name dropping here] Judy Collns, Joni Mtichell, John Sebastian of The Lovin' Spoonful, Bob Dylan, Roger McGuinn of the Byrds, so many others...

Yes , it was a short time that we were able to hear this great group as well as other wonderful musicians from the era. It was success and drugs that ended The Mamas and The Papas. Like so many groups from the time…. Struggling musicians/singers have a big hit . The record companies and their lawyers ( who are slimy on their best days) try to maximize their profits and keep as much money away from the artists. Drug use was new to suburban kids, it was glamorous, and it kept the artists high and away from business. These kids were suddenly famous. They had groupies,places to play, and what seemed like all the money they would ever need The Mamas and The Papas would record a song,play a concert and then get and stay high until they needed more money to get more drugs. The people around them knew they could legally, and not always legally, steal them blind while they were high, happy, and in a state of oblivion. Drugged out musicians don’t stay focused, consistently write new music, and fall apart. Sadly this happened to this wonderful group. 4 drug addicts will not be stable , not work at their craft, and only want their next fix. Then the business people will see there is no more money coming in will drop them and find their next band/ victims to use and steal their money. It was a sad story that was repeated many times. Many great artists of the era died from drugs, most barely survived and got sober but never regained their prominence, and a very very few prevailed. So when you hear a song or a few from someone in the 1960’s until the early 1980’s you can understand why they just seemed to stop and the music ended. Like child actors used until they would grow older, record companies and their executives knew they had a short time to use, steal, and throw out their meal tickets.

They had a great catalog of songs in the brief 2 1⁄2 years that they were together... They were a folk group that came on the scene the same time as The British invasion and Motown swept the nations music scene... The fact that they were able to thrive and be relevant during the British invasion and Motown speaks to their talent and popularity... I would really like to see you go down this rabbit hole because they have some great songs... John Phillips was a great songwriter and he wrote about things that he saw or experienced... He wrote a song called "Twelve Thirty " About his Experience in New York city and seeing a clock in NYC that was stuck at 12:30... Thank you for this! Have some fun and look up Michelle Phillips defiantly eating a banana while doing a performance on the Ed Sullivan show… she was in protest of the requirement that all acts had to lip sync when coming on the show… hysterical!
