In another interview, (it might have been 60 minutes). She went into more detail about the damage, the crew chief told her after examining it there was too much damage to repair it and they were going to scrap it. Later they had a ceremony for her. The maintenance crew, unbeknownst to her, had cut the tail number out and presented it to her. She had it in her office in the Pentagon.

I saw a demonstration of the A-10 at DMAFB here in Tucson. It can turn on a dime, the guns sounds like ripping fabric but 100 times louder. I had a friend who was a trainer, teaching other pilots how to fly. Amazing. And there is no way the F-35 can do what this plane does.

In terms of the US being the most advanced military in the world, the A10 is "outdated". For years there's been a fight to have them retired and to have another craft, specifically an F35 variant, take over the role. But it almost universally has met backlash because the A10 has earned a reputation as a lifesaver. It's flown so many effective missions and given so much support that friendly troops literally cheer when they hear that an A10 is on the way. Its value has extended beyond just military might and into the level of being a piece of equipment that strikes fear into the heart of enemies and inspires our men on the ground to fight harder.
@Blackened30Күн бұрын
The thing is ultimately its safer to do close air support from outside Manpad or AAA range. Once upon a time that wasn't an option, you had to get down in the weeds to do the job. That hasn't been true since the first Gulf War, pods and precision weapons allow you to do the same job better from 20 thousand feet. The B-1 is one of the best aircraft in the role since it carries a huge payload, has tons of fuel and refueling capability and the speed to get where it needs to be in time to do actually do the job. The A-10 is slow and has more limited tools to do the same job. But grunts on the ground don't see that B-1 up high eliminating pockets with precision, they do see the A-10 flying 100 feet over their head when they arrive in time. The A-10 is a really amazing and cool aircraft, but now we're endangering pilots and ground troops needlessly just because the army's vision of close in support hasn't moved on with the times and capabilities.

The A-10, which they almost retired before all this Middle East mess, showed that close air support is still needed and valuable in the USA's arsenal. My brother was an A-10 pilot (F-16's previously) and flew/patrolled the No-Fly zone after the initial aerial attacks a couple weeks later to rotate those first pilots out to give them a break. He never saw any real "action" because the first few days of the war obliterated the Iraq war machine. This story still, to this day, is a true testament to the training, courage, professionalism and determination of the USA, once we commit to something.

I have huge respect for K.C. and her fellow warriors. Thank God that we have people like this. This story exemplifies the old pilot adage that "It is better to be on the ground wishing you were flying than to be flying wishing you were on the ground."

Six of them during their first deployment and one over Baghdad Iraqi Freedom. Great Jet and the best aircraft in the world for survivability and my favorite. Ejecting comes with its own risks, head neck and spinal injuries for example. It's not a perfect system but it beats ending up at the bottom of your own crater. That said a pilot would have to be very motivated to want to jump out (motivations like being on fire or in an uncontrollable nose dive). In this case it sounded like she had more confidence in her landing the aircraft than that of the ejection system. Typically there are no repercussions for ejecting other than perhaps more paperwork and debriefs. Of course, if you jump out of a flyable aircraft that is a whole different story. It actually happened to an F-35 pilot who thought he had to eject and so ended up in someone's backyard. The jet continued flying for about 70 miles without him.

The A-10 is a very unique aircraft. They built the plane around the main gun so the front landing gear is actually mounted off center to make space for the gun. The gun itself is larger than a car, its a 7 barreled gatling autocannon called the Gau-8 Avenger. The a-10 was built with redundancy in mind so any part that gets blown off has a 2nd one or a backup to keep the plane flying. With a little searching you can find images of a-10’s missing engines, half their wing, missing a tailfin, or missing the entire cockpit glass that have landed safely. Its a relatively slow jet that carries more ordinance than most single seat aircraft and its very maneuverable and extremely durable. The one of a kind sound it’s gun makes is so iconic that all ground troops recognize it and it’s psychologically a morale booster. And sadly our government is removing it and not really replacing it with a aircraft with similar capabilities.

The Black Rifle Coffee Company was founded by a bunch of Afghanistan and Iraq Combat Veterans, when they returned to the U.S. and finished their service to our country, they got together, and sourced some of the very best beans on the planet, they only sell their coffee beans online, I am sure you can figure out the website. I personally am not a coffee drinker myself, but I have been told, that is is as top shelf as you can get for coffee. When I served in the military, I was an aircraft mechanic, and depending on the aircraft, each can absorb certain damage, out of all of them, the one that is still in service TODAY that was designed to absorb an incredible amount of battle damage and stay in the fight is the A-10, before the A-10, it would have been the A-1, and before the A-1 was probably the P-47.

This video is a testament to her decision making and training, but especially to the redundant systems and overall design of the Hawg. The A-10 is built to withstand damage, with the engines up high and partially protected by the wings and fuselage, the fuel tanks are self sealing, and the cockpit encased in relatively impervious titanium. Warthogs have come back from missions without a wing, some without vertical stabilizers, and riddled with bullet holes.

The A-10 is not a "fighter jet" per se, it's a ground support aircraft. Because of that it flies low to the ground where it invites more ground fire. Because of that the cockpit of the A-10 is surrounded by a "bathtub" of titanium to protect the pilot. The A-10's official name is the Thunderbolt II, but it's called the Warthog because it's kind of ugly and very tough.

Be interesting to see if the new, Super A-10 they are currently testing, will live up to its namesake? Two things people don't mention, when they talk about other aircraft, taking over close air support and relying on precision munitions instead. One the cost of those munitions compared to the cost of the A-10, A-10's are incredibly cheap, relative to every other aircraft. And second, the psychological effect it has on the battlefield, and not just for US troops, but also the sheer terror it inspires in the enemy! I'll take A-10's and AC-130 gunships any day of the week for close air support, over high-altitude precision bombing.

The A-10 was designed to take hits like that and still bring the pilot back home. They knew it would be shot at a lot with the mission it was tasked to do, and put all kinds of redundancy's into it. It has triple redundant flight controls. It's landing gear is specifically designed to be deployable even without hydraulics. It can still fly even if half its tail is shot off. It also has a titanium bathtub that the pilot sits in, designed and tested to resist anti-aircraft rounds. No other plane in the U.S. inventory has pilot protection like the A-10 has. If any plane was going to bring her home after taking 100+ rounds, it was that plane.
@spacehonky631521 сағат бұрын
I aint gonna second guess her for deciding to land her damaged plane. She's the expert who had a whole hour to test the manual flight controls. You're right though, she probably could have bailed out safely. I'm guessing they trashed that plane afterwards anyway.

I wish they would have said all the other things about the A-10 that makes it literally “the flying tank”. Like, it’s designed to land with it’s landing gear UP in case they loose hydraulics and can’t put it down. That’s why the back tires and wheels stick out from their storage location by a decent amount. Or, that the engines are mounted so high so they are harder to hit, but that puts them in the line of flying debris if the wings get hit. So, they simply built the engines to be able to EAT the wing if they had to, and still run. Or, that the gun is longer and heavier than an old school VW beetle if you see it outside the aircraft. It slows the aircraft down and causes it to try to rotate when firing. That’s from the recoil and the rotational mass of all those barrels and that assembly rotating one way. They (sometimes) paint a fake canopy on the bottom of the aircraft. That way, if the enemy sees that while looking at the bottom of the airplane, they wait to shoot because they expect the bottom to be easier to shoot through. While it’s one of our most feared aircraft, it’s sub-sonic (can’t break the sound barrier) and doesn’t have an afterburner. While technically not a fighter, it could out dog fight ANY fighter jet from any country, if it ever got in that position. That’s because it can out turn everything, other than a helicopter. It could get behind anything flying other than a helicopter. Once there, just a few hits from that gun would shred anything that flies. It has been on the chopping block SO many times to get cut. The people in the government that want them cut say it can be replaced with a lot of other planes. One of the “geniuses” that said to cut it, said you could do close air support ( something that’s done VERY low and requires a tough bird ), with a B-2 stealth bomber! As in, bomber that cost SO much money for one, can’t take ANY abuse, we have VERY a few of them, they require 2-3 crew to fly, and has to operate at huge altitudes to stay safe. So, the idiot that said this stuff got laughed at in congress. We were lucky enough to still have John MacCain in office and he was a pilot during Vietnam himself, was shot down, and spent a lot of time in the “Hanoi Hilton”. They have struck it from the budget finally, which they shouldn’t have done, and say they can replace it in the same role with the F-16 and F-35!?!? Both are “F”ighters, not “A”ttack aircraft, have to fly faster just to stay up, have NO where near to loiter time on station, can’t carry the same load amount as the A-10, and both are way more expensive to buy, operate, and maintain over the A-10’s, and their biggest problem is, they can’t take 1/10th of the beating an A-10 can take.

Cpt. Campbell without question did an outstanding job & we're all pleased she returned unharmed. I most sincerely thank here for here service. Unfortunately we have show that we, as a country, are willing to accept female soldiers being horrifically injured & killed in war zones. Are we really willing to accept what likely happens if/when our female soldiers are captured? I think not. Has the US government ever released all the details of what happened to the Jessica Lynch, a US female soldier captured in the Iraq war? What do you think happened to the Israeli females taken hostage in Gaza? You probably couldn't put that on KZbin. In my opinion, I don't think we, as a country, need to be sending female soldiers to or beyond the front lines in combat situations or anywhere the risk of them being captured by the enemy is high.

Sorry, but what hogwash, women have been officially serving in the military since WW1, so unless you're pushing at least 108, they've been serving throughout your entire lifetime, whether you knew it or not. Yes, roles were far more limited, but it didn't stop them from suffering and dying like any other soldiers. You diminish this woman's service and sacrifice, give her the honor and respect she deserves, and she has more than earned. She chose her profession, and like any individual, she should have the right to self-determination. Everything else is about you, how you feel, what you think is appropriate, blah, blah, blah, me, me, me, mine, mine, mine! How unbelievably self-important, self-righteous and just plain selfish you are. If someone is capable, competent, qualified and committed, they should have the same opportunities as anyone else, regardless of race, religion, creed, color or sex, PERIOD! The A-10 concept and specs were put on paper by Hans Rudel. Rudel was Nazi Germanys' most decorated pilot of WW2. Rudel's primary plane was the Stuka. Late in the war, his Stuka had two cannons under his wings (cannon bird). He is credited with destroying 800 vehicles and a battleship. Rudel was an unrepentant Nazi till he passed, but hated the Soviets more than the West. Rudel was the primary consultant in the development of the A-10, a close air support plane that was designed to destroy Soviet armor during the Cold War.

In a situation like that where the aircraft is so damaged and over so much enemy held territory the life and welfare of the pilot takes priority, so I don't think she would have been in any trouble. Quite the heroine.

Saw a lot of them in Korea when I was there in 1989. Also quite a few cobra gunships. Got mock killed by both in team spirit 89.

That was just about the last year you could be killed by an Army Cobra on exercise. I remember a few lingering green Ah-1Ss until the Desert Sootm adventure, but it was all 64s after that. The only -1s you ever saw were the thicc Vipers the Marines were flying around, which, IMO, were the best looking attack helicopters ever produced. 89 was when

No, you are 1,000% correct...there are things men are better at and women are better at and areas of CROSSOVER/OVERLAP but when people say EVERYTHING a man can....NO. period. There is ZERO problems getting out of a damaged aircraft, the military says if a pilot feels their life is in danger...LEAVE! GET OUT A.S.A.P.! DO NOT RISK YOUR LIFE! There was Israeli pilot in a brand new F-15 who lost an entire wing in a mid-air collision with an A4 in practice, while the plane spun out of control, gushed fuel and everyone on the radio screaming at him EJECT, EJECT, EJECT.....he stayed with the aircraft...last ditch effort, floored the throttle and it started to shape up....he wound up flying 10 miles back to base and landed the jet safely.....at like 350 knotts...but he landed it! Even you have to get captured and be rescued...eject and survive...phuck an plane! We got plenty more!

Hey folks, there is another very interesting video called "pilots asked to take out flight 93 ( the one that landed in PA.). It's about 37 minutes long and CBS News interview the two pilots. 1 male pilot and 1 female pilot. There feelings are bared in no holes barred interview. I think you would really appreciate it. Nice job with this reaction. Peace, Bill.

1) You have an interesting definition of “landed”. 2) Their not there 3) it’s holds barred, not holes.

Ejection would have had it's risks also. She was pilot in command of that aircraft. It was totally her decision to make. Also, the pilot costs the taxpayers more than the aircraft does. Lives always come before equipment.

I'm not sure that doing a job that is potentially/probably going to take another humans life would be considered "fun". While training may be fun. When your protecting your fellow comrades, and taking the lives of other people,...not so much.

Yeah, the A-10 is pretty much a flying tank. You have to get some heavier munitions than that.
