You can’t have any idea what a cultural phenomenon this was when it came out in the 80’s. I still remember exactly where I was when it premiered on MTV and it was as big as any motion picture. The beginning sequence was inspired by Jackson’s fascination with the special effects in An American Werewolf In London. Rick Baker actually did the effects for the video as well. The dance sequence is certainly one of the most iconic- if not THE most iconic- in music videos. We truly hadn’t seen anything like Thriller, and we were BLOWN AWAY.

I'm forty six and I've never seen Casablanca nor Gone with the Wind. I've only seen part of the Wizard of Oz as a kid on TV and I don't even remember what it was about. With cable television becoming more available all over the western world just when the CD revolution and MTV started, the music industry just exploded! To this day the Thriller Dance is still being performed every year at the New York Greenwich Village Halloween Parade in NYC where I live. It's the highlights of that massive parade every year. The Thriller dance was an enormous dance trend that lasted decades. Performed even at weddings receptions by guests and other parties with large gatherings. Before the Macarena or The Electric Slide there was The Thriller Dance. Yes, there were other group dances before The Thriller. I remember when this video premiered on MTV. I got to school the next day, and I dare say there wasn't a single kid who hadn't watched it. Thriller is the greatest music video ever made. Period. Young people will never comprehend the significance of Thriller -- the album. I was a teen when it came out and it was everywhere -- on TV, MTV, and on constant rotation on the radio. Back when people actually bought vinyl, cassettes, and CDs. Physical media, not an MP3 or a stream. The album didn't go away for almost a full year. It was like Beatlemania 20 years prior. There's no equivalent today. You'd practically have to combine 20 Taylor Swifts to match that level of EPIC that Thriller amounted to. Not to mention Michael was 24 when he made Thriller. 24! What were you doing at 24? You understand the level of genius it takes to create the biggest selling album of all time? No one can. It might not happen again for another 100 years.

Secondly, the makeup artist's decision to create a WereCat instead of a werewolf was brilliant and added a unique twist to the video. All the wolf sound effects in the video were taken from John Landis' movie "An American Werewolf In London," which made the experience authentic and chilling. Michael's WereCat howl on the track was a standout moment. Thirdly, Peggy Lipton suggested adding Vincent Price's voiceover, which added a haunting dimension to the video. Micheal is the single reason why music videos are part of the industry today. He was constantly innovating and stretching the possibilities. He was always entertaining and always made good music. You really should listen to more of his old stuff. Its sad younger people think Michael was a joke because he truly was a cultural icon.

And oddly enough, Weird Al as well. MTV had just started and no one really knew what they were doing, so Michael Jackson and Weird Al were just _trying_ things and innovating. And in doing so they defined what a music video could be. _Thriller_ was super expensive for the time, but everyone was so dedicated that it turned out to be something amazing.

Well, Michael certainly took music videos to another level....but he didn't actually invent them! Ever heard of an iconic Australian music show called Countdown? It started in 1973 and was full of locally made music video clips.....years before MTV or Michael Jackson's solo career ever happened....so let's not go overboard.

No one said he invented music videos. He _innovated_ them. Look at music videos from the late 70s and 80s, they have nothing to do with the song, or they're just the performers playing or singing it. What amazes me about Michael as a performer is how he made it looks so effortless. He was doing this video with actual dancers. When I say that, mean people who did dancing as a profession. Broadway performers, Solid Gold dancers, choreographers... all kinds of people who STUDIED dance. And Michael (a SINGER) just has to see a choreographer do the dance, and he does it. Dancers loved and respected Michael. Some of them got into dance because of him. Michael was a singer, but always wanted to be seen and respected also as a dancer.

I believe MJ studied and worked on his dancing far more than he worked on his singing. Also keep in mind he went through a whole period where lip synced most of his concert performances in order to be able to keep his dance numbers complex and top notch. I think he really prioritized dance as part of his “song and dance man” entertainment package.

He had also been studying dance intensively since early childhood. There are interviews of him at seven or eight saying he like James Brown's dancing and I'm sure he always had his eye on other artists and took and adapted what he liked of their moves for himself.

When this came out it was so far ahead of its time. A 13 minute video was unheard of. And how about the back up dancers oh my God. And of course Vincent Price with the narration. There was nothing like this ever before and hasn't been ever since. . Simply genius.

During the MTV music video era an announcement would be made that a new Michael Jackson music video would be unveiled soon. "Thriller" was much anticipated and Michael was the one that changed music videos such as 'Thriller" directed by John Landis and was essentially a short movie. What was nice was that it was pure wonderful music and entertainment by the legendary and highly talented Jackson without the sex and violence in music videos made my groups later.

BTW don't lie, His demographics were terrible, Thriller was all his got, by 1985 the unreleased songs album Farewell My Summer Love was a failure and in 1987 Bad the single broke the record for fasted #1 song to leave the top 40 charts (never before seen according to Billboard) and Bad album sales were disappointing, plus MJ never won a musical Grammy again after Thriller, ever!!!

The dance has been learned from the video, Michael never danced it in concert, etc. When this long video came out, it was shown on MTV on a special broadcast. Millions of people tuned in. You missed the important part in the credits. The video was a directed and produced by John Landis, a top Hollywood director at the time. The "scary music" was directed, arranged, and produced by Elmer Bernstein, a top orchestra leader who wrote the music for some of Hollywood's most noteworthy movies, such as The Ten Commandments, The Great and The Magnificent Seven--he was a multiple Oscar and Grammy winner. The spoken parts were done by veteran actor Vincent Price, who had starred in a numerous of top Hollywood horror and "thriller" films, and--finally--the song and album were produced by Quincy Jones, who was entering into his fourth decade as a jazz musician, movie and TV score writer and arranger, and music producer--Quincy Jones remains today one of the most prolific music writers and producers of all time, being nominated for 80 and winning 28 Grammy Awards.

So I grew up being very aware of the thriller dance due to watching the music video a lot . Its so iconic and it makes me appreciate the way MJ did music videos (its a lost art )

As an 80's kid, I can assure you that this video is where we all learned the Thriller dance, lol. It was not just a music video, this was a mini-movie and MJ was the top in those days. Once this video premiered, everyone had to do the dance! On a side note, if I remember correctly from seeing a 'behind-the-scenes' of the making of the video, that was MJ as the werewolf. It actually amazes me that you guys had no idea, even when not being from that era. That's kinda impossible. This was really groundbreaking, at the scale of Elvis, Beatles... Even my kids, who are teenagers now, understand the significance of this album and this video. They've known it for years. The techniques used, the filming, the special effects, the costs to make it... it was all huge for the 80ties. And Michael was the first to even make a short film like this to accompany a single. There's a long 'making off' video, which actually aired on tv multiple times. (Remember at the time that was the only visual media channel available at home). MTV was just a babychannel... MJ had set the bar for artists to come up with creative musicvideo's since then. Also the choreo, as it was done in a group like this, in sync, was something he was famous for. And make no mistake, everyone knew about the zombies dancing. It was a big hype, and is copied everywhere up until today. As cheesy as it comes across to you today, at the time there was a serious age-warning before airing.

I was 20 years old when this first hit MTV. It was played every hour for WEEKS. MJ was the FIRST black artist to show up on MTV on a heavy rotation due to this album with Billie Jean. MJ started a revolution for black artists getting their music and video's out to the public. There is a “Making of Thriller”, find it and watch it. MJ redefined the singer/songwriter. Michael Jackson was just a few years older than me. I grew up as he did. I have to say, it was a wild ride.

Whenever we did the Thriller dance, we all knew we were being/imitating zombies. We all learned the dance from the video, so our first reference to the dance was the zombies doing it. But, yes, it is hard to put into words how big the Thriller album was. No album before or since had such immediate, world-wide public impact. We were also at the peak of MTV, so everyone waited impatiently for his new videos to come out. There was a big todo about the release of the Thriller video (its first premiere on MTV). Friends got together to have watch parties. I was 13 at the time and with about 10-15 friends to watch the video together when it premiered. I mean, there may have been as many people watching that premiere as a Super Bowl. And yes, videos had been getting more and more elaborate as MTV became more and more popular...and Thriller took it to the extreme/pinnacle, creating a mini-movie. The video was directed by John Landis, who directed such movies as Animal House, The Blues Brothers, Trading Places, and of course the 1981 film An American Werewolf in London (that had ground-breaking practical effects for the transition of the main character into a werewolf). The narration is of course by the actor Vincent Price, who was well known for starring in horror/murder movies (among other films). The song was written as a bit of an homage to those types of older Hollywood thrillers (monster movies, 50/60s sci-fi, macabre/creepy films, etc.).

We learned the dance from this video, with the monsters. The dance was created only for this video and debuted in this music video. The album had already been released prior to the video debut and had sold millions of copies but when this music video premiered, it alone doubled the record sales and pushed it into the best selling record of all time. Every news station, radio station and talk show was talking about it the next day. I bought a magazine the was specifically made to review the song and the video. That was the only subject through the publication. The song/video launched MJ into the stratosphere!

I'm 63... when this came out I was already hard into Floyd, stones, zeppelin... etc... so I wasn't really into anything 'Jackson"... but... always a BUT..... My two young daughters were totally into him, and when "The Jackson's Victory Tour" announced a stop a mere 8 hours away, of course they begged me to go... they were like 9 and 10 years old. I finally gave ingot us 3 tickets, mid floor. Have to confess... I was blown away... not so much by the music, it was what I expected, although I did develop a little more appreciation for it. It was the SHOW they put on. Right up there with the best of the shows I'd seen of 'my type of bands'. it taught be to listen and observe more closely, music I didn't particularly like. And here I am today, still lovin' all the old stuff but, heavily into country, which is in due in no small part, to my Jackson's experience.👍🏼✌🏼🇨🇦

I saw the European Premiere of the Thriller video at a cinema in London on Nov 26th, a few days before it was shown on MTV. Now the effect of watching the Thriller video on the big screen is massive, compared to seeing it on TV. The whole audience went nuts and the horror scenes were more effective. We were then asked by the head of Epic Records if we would like to watch the video again and the audience screamed. Watching the video again especially with the dance routines, you knew that you watching magic, which would stand the test of time and an artist at the peak of their creativity.

Just to give you guys a little quick backstory since I am an 80s kid all… and since you asked about the video.. The idea for the 'Thriller' video came from Michael Jackson himself, in order to keep the album scoring high in the hit lists. After seeing 'An American Werewolf' in London he contacted film director John Landis and asked him to turn Jackson into a monster. The Thriller video was considered groundbreaking because the video sealed MTV's position as a major cultural force, helped disassemble racial barriers for black artists, revolutionized music video production, popularized making-of documentaries, and drove rentals and sales of VHS tapes. In the 80s MTV showed nothing but music videos back in the day. That’s how it started out and that’s why you see long versions almost like a movie that goes with some of the most popular songs from back then. Music videos at the time were a huge deal then but that all changed Later on with the Internet and social media.

How could you have never seen the video that changed videos forever? The only videos that topped this one is...Other Michael Jackson videos! Whenever Michael came out with a new video, it was an event in my house. I got to stay up pass my bedtime. This video was groundbreaking.

Yes, that's actually Michael. There's a video called The Making of Thriller with exclusive interviews and makeup and how everything came to life. I loved watching it as a kid. It's fascinating. They talk to Michael throughout, the Director John Landis, the makeup artist Rick Baker Ola Ray (the girl in the video), and the performers while putting makeup on. **Update** I just watched it after almost 40 years. The full video is on YT and was uploaded a year ago. Its 58 mins long, and it's well worth it to watch. You really see what a great guy Michael was. Just salt of the earth.
