Elton John was scheduled to play a couple of sets after Queen. When he was backstage with David Bowie and The Who (both were next in the set line up) watching the performance that Freddie and Queen were giving , Elton yelled out "You bastards! You stole the show!" Bowie is also quoted as saying something to the effect of "How the Hell is anybody supposed to follow that?!"

The world will never see groups like this again. Back then you had musicians. They would write their own songs, play their own instruments and a lot of them played multiple instruments. Singing in in harmonies without any electric special effects. Just performing. Today all we have is studio produced background music and a person singing.

As a 16 year old, myself and 2 friends travelled from Glasgow Central Station to King's Cross. We paid £25 a ticket and wow was it wirth it. We were massive Adam Ant fans and thats why we went. Of course we knew Queen and their songs but after the performance of Freddie and the boys our love was then given to Queen. Nearly 40 years after that day, its still crystal clear in my memory. If I remember well, Adam constantly point Live Aid as the reason why his career declined, which is quite curios. He's a nice but usually forgotten gem of the 80s

@Rhuan Lima spot on, he blamed it for the loss of popularity. Everyone was supposed to be on stage for 20 minutes. Adam was told to cut his set short and only sung one song - Vive Le Rock. He was blamed for the short set then publicly slammed the organisers of live aid....his career slid after that. He's still a favourite of mine and I still attend his concerts.

i was there 😍 about 30 rows back to the left, it was a hot day, thirsty but young 😂..tbh the concert was dying from long winded sets then on came Queen and my god they kicked out a set that was punchy and threw in shortened songs, they saved the day imo,,, it was the start of their comeback i still remember it all these decades later and i am thankful to have witnessed it, the greatest entertainer who was taken to soon.

His laryngitis was about 2 weeks earlier and he was over it for about a week but his doctor told him not to sing just in case it would damage his voice. He did anyway and you can tell a few times it cracked. Freddie Mercury was awesome!!!

This is a rushed 20 minute "greatest hits" set (that doesn't even have all of their greatest hits) set in the middle of a multi-band concert and Freddie himself was ill so it wasn't his best vocal performance by any stretch (still amazing though). And yet, they absolutely stole the show. Queen when they were finely tuned and fully prepared were beyond incredible but this performance is still amazing.

Roger Taylor on drums deserves huge credit for his vocals too..the falsetto is him supporting Freddie's vocals. You can hear him take up the slack when Freddie is struggling a little, Hammer to Fall and We are the Champions. 2 things to remember. Firstly, his doctor had warned him against singing that day as he was having a problem with his throat. Secondly, this was not a Queen concert, yet, Freddie managed to win the crowd over and get them all to join in. Oh, a third thing. I think it was Elton John was heard to say, can you hear that? Freddie Mercury was also suffering from AIDS when this concert happened. He wasn't full blown, but it was an exceptional effort for him to not only put on the concert, but as Brian May said, he was the one that made that concert what it was. The donations weren't coming in that strongly before Queen took the stage, but because of Freddie, they made their donation goals. Freddie was truly one of a kind and commanded that stage like it was his alone.

This was 85, I don’t think he was diagnosed as HIV+ until either 87 or 89. He did have some vocal issue that night which could have kept him from preforming…. He chose to go on anyway. :)

Fun Facts: A journalist named Paul Gambaccini who was backstage during Live Aid said that when Queen went onstage/Freddie started singing... it "was like a dog whistle went off: EVERY head of EVERY one backstage turned. They were all thinking 'My God, they're stealing the show!" When Freddie started his Improv with the audience, singing that first "AY-OH"... Brian May has said that the band DIDN'T know that was going to happen! So, when Brian's standing with his back to the audience/Freddie's starts singing "AY-OH", Brian said he was actually thinking: "Ohhh, so we're doing THAT now, are we?!" Not very many people notice that - during "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" - Brian changes guitars THREE times. Freddie did actually have a bad throat infection at-the-time and his doctor didn't even want him to perform... When the set was over, he said it felt like he'd "been gargling with shards of glass". (That's not so fun, actually!) Freddie's then-new boyfriend/common-law husband Jim Hutton, said that when Fred invited him to come to this event with him, ALL Freddie told Jim was that the band was going to perform for some charity event. (Oh Freddie!) AND... Jim had NEVER heard/seen Freddie & the band sing/perform before, AT ALL, EVER. (Jim had apparently been living under a rock... When he/Fred first went out, he had NO idea who Freddie Mercury even was... which is probably why Fred was drawn to him: Fred knew that Jim liked him just for himself, not his fame.) Anyway... when they arrived, poor Jim said "I was GOBSMACKED... I just followed Freddie around like a puppy!"

A stunning and unforgettable moment in history. I sat glued to the TV for almost 24 hours during this event in 1985. Up until Queen entered the stage there was little involvement or interactions and appreciations from the 90 000 crowd in Wembley Stadium in London. When they left the stage, the other artists did not want to enter after them - they said, "Who can ever top that". And the fact that Freddie was sick and had little time to rehearse properly before this show says a lot of his capability. Freddie was probably one of the best performers ever. I'm fortunate to have seen Queen live during Freddie's era. In 1984 and 1986 in Sweden. Amazing every time. Actually, I believe the band rehearsed solidly for a fortnight for this one 20minute spot, to get the thing perfectly honed, including the very tight timings. It was one of the reasons they outshone so many other big names who appeared there, who hadn't bothered much with the preparation, since it was 'only' a charity show. But check it out, perhaps I'm remembering wrongly. I never got to see a concert of theirs, but was lucky enough to meet Freddie and Roger once, just before they started their rise to fame, in 1973 - almost exactly 50 years ago! I used to see them all around - a bunch of very handsome young guys - in Kensington and elsewhere in London in the late 60s/early 70s. I had a bit of a crush on Freddie! He was such a sweetie IRL...

If you haven't seen the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, Rami Malek did an excellent job portraying Freddy, even recreating this concert in great detail. He won an Oscar for his performance. I grew up in the 1960s and 70s, the best era for rock music. I remember when Queen released "A Night at the Opera" in 1975. I was a senior in high school.

Queen really understood the assignment with this concert - whilst some artists tried to treat it as promotion for their latest music, Queen just played the hits, the songs everyone knew and got the crowd involved as you saw. It pretty much rebooted their career and a year later they came back and played a concert of their own at Wembley. Particularly check out the interplay between Freddie and the crowd before they go into Under Pressure. Iconic. The reason it said 9.48 at the end was because Brian and Freddie came back out on stage a couple of hours later for an encore and performed "Is this the world that we created".

This was the most amazing day of live music. Almost back-to-back we had Status Quo, Spandau Ballet, Elvis Costello, Sade, Sting and Phil Collins, Bryan Ferry, Paul Young and Alison Moyet, U2, Dire Straits, Queen, The Who, Elton John, and Paul McCartney. All in one line-up one after the other. It was epic. And pity David Bowie who went on straight after Queen and who just said "You bastards!" as they passed him waiting to go on stage. I put the commitment of the audience down to no mobile phones. They were just living in the moment, whereas now they would be intent on videoing it rather than participating.

All the Queen fans (millions of us world-wide) knew you would LOVE LOVE LOVE this! The entire band was GENIUS that bright summer day! Unlike other bands, Queen practiced for many days prior to this event. For one thing, they selected only those songs from their HUGE catalog they knew would elicit the response from the audience that they wanted - they shortened some songs, sped up some others so that they would bring their time slot to close right on 20 minutes - there are even tapes of their rehearsal sessions. BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE from the entire band that shows why they were loved around the world at the time and are LEGENDS to this day. This concert still gives me chills each time I see it.

You got that right. They didn't leave anything to chance. This was no accident, right from the start they tuned up their instrument the moment they got on stage. The timing, choreography, song choice was impeccable. I have no idea how many times I watch this, it never gets old.

Freddie always made sure the audience was satisfied. He appreciated the fan base, and he gave his all. The whole band did, all were greatly talented in their particular instrument. This is fabulous talent; no need for modern day autotune. No cell phones, the bands connected directly with the crowds. A piece of history which cannot be overlooked, as a special occasion (to use Freddie's word)!!❤

I have heard it said that during their set, all of the other artists back stage stopped what they were doing, turned to the tv and made comments about how Queen was "stealing the show." I don't know what time of night this took place but I do know that they chose that time slot because it would be seen by whoever was watching it around the world

OMG, THANK YOU Guys... This absolutely made my morning!! FYI... There is ALSO A QUEEN ENCORE at Live Aid... Freddie Mercury & Brian May had been invited to perform an acoustic ballad later in the evening as part of the closing numbers: "IS THIS THE WORLD WE CREATED?" ...This was what was about to appear at the end, at 9:48 p.m... This (AWESOME) video from Mundo do Rock used to have the encore included at the end, but then the "KZbin gods" started blocking the encore... so they just cut it off so their video wouldn't be blocked by YT anymore. The video for the encore is now on the official Live Aid YT channel. (HINT!)

The amazing thing for me watching this back, (I was 12 when i watched it live), but just remembering this wasn't a Queen or Freddie's audience it was a charity event with lots of acts from around the world ! But by the time they'd finished their bit everybody was a Queen/ Freddie fan even if just for a short time.

What's crazy is that he was super, super sick at this time. He had severe bronchitis and flu. He was running high fevers all day and his doctor advised him not to sing if he didn't want permanent voice damage. He refused to not perform, and he STILL had that much energy and sounded that great. That is a master at his craft! Definitely the ultimate frontman ever! That is cups of tea with honey & lemon on the piano. Many always thought it was beer, but nope. Nice reaction guys!

Right at the end of that video, when the screen showed 9:48pm, Freddie (vocals)and Brian (guitar) re-appeared to sing "Is this the world we created". Few of the Queen clips from that day include that song, but it's well worth checking out, it's a very poignant song which fitted in perfectly with the sentiment of the day, to help the starving people of Africa.

This is what stage presence REALLY looks like. Freddie held 72,000 people in the palm of his hand. Utter brilliance! Brian May said that when they played 'Radio Ga Ga' at this gig, the audience response with the clapping nearly made him fill his pants! Awesome!

Of course, it helps to have a half dozen of the most epic rock anthems to roll out for just such an occasion. Queen sometimes wrote specifically for this audience participation and seemed like whenever they did, it became a hit. On the one hand, they seem like real simple as songs. On the other hand, the pieces are all excellent, the vibe caught the audience, AND, you had Freddie showing why what's on paper is just a launch pad..

There was an encore at the end of the show. Brian's acoustic guitar accompanied Freddie "Is This The World We Created", it was very moving and appropriate for the occasion. That reverse bow he does at performances is for his old management who were predatory. After 3 LP's and world tours they still were being paid a few pounds weekly while management was buying new luxury cars. Roger was also told to not break any more drumsticks because they were too expensive to replace. If you listen to" Death on Two Legs" you will understand.

Great reaction! A buddy of mine flew overseas to see the performance (he was technically working as part of a stage and sound crew) and he said Queen's performance was the show. He felt like some of the other acts kind of mailed in their performances or didn't expend much energy on their shows, but then Queen came out and blew the doors off of Wembley. I don't remember who was slated to follow them, but my friend told they really didn't want to go on because no performance was going to match up to what Mercury and Company had just given the audience. Freddie had been advised not to perform as his throat was sore and had been bothering him, but you saw how much attention he paid to doctor's orders. Freddie seemed to live for performing and he did it so well. And, obviously, no what what bands people had come to see, it seemed that when Freddie was on stage EVERYBODY was there for Queen! I still remember where I was when I got the news the day he died. Queen's music had been such a big part of my life that I was floored and just couldn't function for a while trying to process the news. Just a shame to lose a talent like his. But the ones that burn brightest often burn out fastest, right? I'm still sad.
