there was a company in the uk called tj hughes. so to avoid confusion of perhaps people thinking tj maxx would be something to do with tj hughes they just changed the j to k. tj hughes was nearly identical in what they sold so perhaps people may have thought tj maxx was like a bigger tj hughes like when companies build bigger shops and put extra on the end maxx could seem like a bigger version lol.
