Not many people realize Fort Wayne is basically Detroit’s unofficial minor league feeder city. Even the Pistons originated there before moving to Detroit.

You want to say "it's not that deep, it's just hot dogs in Detroit. " But I've worked for a Greek pizza restaurant for a while, and you start to feel a sense of pride when you have a big role in the restaurant success. So when you get right ups from the local news or a 30 second video clip on the 6:00 news you feel like you're doing something. You're always saying your product's the best and you try to keep low prices to try and keep customers coming back. When I was young, and first working, I didn't care about any of that. Once I got into my 30s I had a lot more pride in what I did. I was a teacher who worked at a pizza place part-time. You always hate the guy next door who claims he has better food than you. I’ve been to both many times. My dad, grandpa and I would go to both every time we went to a Tigers game or a Red Wings game. We’d stop a get a coney from both places. I can tell you the the rivalry is real and that everyone I know is torn between the two places. Personally, I like Lafayette better. I think they just have better chili which really makes the dog for me. Plus, Lafayette is more down to Earth. It’s the kind of whole in the wall city food I know and love. American is just trying too hard.

Lafayette seems to be the old school guinea shit, gimme it. And American looks to be evolving with the hot dog times. Lafayette’s employees definitely seem more engaging and passionate. Americans employees didn’t seem very enthusiastic (just a couple kids with day jobs). The owners were enthusiastic, but, a little bit aggressive in their distaste for Lafayette. Are Lafayette’s dogs really that rubbery? Usually these old school type guys win Portnoy over. So, the dog must have been unimpressive.

Just so you know, Coney Islands started in Michigan in this country. The first Coney Island restaurant was opened in Jackson, Michigan, in 1914 by a Macedonian immigrant named George Todoroff. The Detroit area coney dogs are the best, There is also another style called the Flint coney, its more of a red sauce. The last is a Chile dog that to me they are shit! Keep up the great reviews.
