When I was 10 years old, my uncle took my dad and I to a tigers night game, we sat on the right field side, Rusty Staub was the right fielder and Mark the Bird Fidrych was pitching. It was a perfect summer night game, the stadium was completely full and the Tigers won. After the game, the fans stayed and clapped until the bird came out for a bow. We then went to the coney, not sure which one and I had my first coney dog. I have since been back whenever possible, one time I had 4 coneys. I will never forget the memories.

For those who don't know the actual story goes that both brothers started Lafayette first and when they had a falling out the "uncle" started American Coney. Also unbeknownst to the families claims that they started both restaurants in 1917 & 1914 the nephew confirms that 1924 was when the first restaurant opened up but according to food directories Lafayette was the first one to open in 1924 and when the falling out happened American Coney later opened in 1936 so their both kinda lying 😂

Ok, Prez, I'm 68 years old, been going since I was 6 years old. My father was born in 1919, and tells me how he used to date my mother when coneys were 5 cents. I remember, but they didn't tell you, there were 3 in a row. Two down from American. It was always closed, but I do remember the fights outside, between the two. And they would physically try pulling you into their storefronts. And you know Detroit Lion Alex Karris, yep family. As far as the buns go. Used to be the Blue Bird Baking Co. Made buns for both. And Dearborn Sausage produces the hot dogs. The proper way to order a couple 2 on 1, Heavy. Meaning, 2 coney dogs on one plate, both with Heavy Chilli. Now, Factoid! For years American, had a door on both sides of the Kearn block, But Lafayette didn't, Also American had BEER!! And what was the corner store, UNITED SHIRT, mens store. Just remembering the good old day's.

and the best part about Lafayette is ordering when its jammed before a local game or concert. The way they yell the orders and never get it wrong is the wild part. Otherwise dogs are the same. I prefer Lafayette for the experience and I think the bathrooms are hilarious. I got married in Las Vegas and our party of 30 ate at American. I moved to western Canada and have had American kits mailed for 8 years. Its the Rivalry that makes both a good time and good eats. This video was awesome to watch. I’ve been to both many times. My dad, grandpa and I would go to both every time we went to a Tigers game or a Red Wings game. We’d stop a get a coney from both places. I can tell you the the rivalry is real and that everyone I know is torn between the two places. Personally, I like Lafayette better. I think they just have better chili which really makes the dog for me. Plus, Lafayette is more down to Earth. It’s the kind of whole in the wall city food I know and love. American is just trying too hard.

As a 58 year old Detroiter, I have probably eaten at Lafayette’s around a 100 times. Primarily after concerts and sporting events. However, I have never eaten at American. They are for tourists and Lafayette’s is for Detroiters. People stand in line at Lafayette’s when American has open seating. BTW…I have never seen Lafayette’s empty like in this video.

Lafayette seems to be the old school guinea shit, gimme it. And American looks to be evolving with the hot dog times. Lafayette’s employees definitely seem more engaging and passionate. Americans employees didn’t seem very enthusiastic (just a couple kids with day jobs). The owners were enthusiastic, but, a little bit aggressive in their distaste for Lafayette. Are Lafayette’s dogs really that rubbery? Usually these old school type guys win Portnoy over. So, the dog must have been unimpressive.
