THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. My Father and I were about to begin the setting up of my NAS system with the Seagate expansion drive. He was a computer genius for over 50 years and he passed away before we could get into the project. I had all the parts and needed to figure out how to get to the drive. In the middle of my meltdown, missing my Dad, I found your video and I can now continue with my project. Again, THANK YOU for this video. Should I purchase more drives, I will utilize your link.

Thanks for posting this video. It took an extra tool, Dremel with cutoff wheel, to cut around the edge. The 6TB was a breeze using a strong flat blade screwdriver to get it started. Once there was a gap i was able to pry apart using my fingers and a wide blade screwdriver. Now I have them mounted in a removable bay inside my tower. Again, much appreciated.

My Seagate drive just died, and I was a bit reluctant to take it apart until I saw this. Turns out there were a lot of spider corpses inside, melted on to the circuit board, probably shorted it out, or maybe the adapter died. I didn't want to smash up the enclosure in case I had to RMA it. But I'm using it as an internal drive now and it's working just fine! Thanks!

I have found sliding 2 pieces of paper inbetween the crack and then sliding an old card (like an old credit card / membership card) inbetween those 2 pieces of paper is fantastic for this sort of thing. For one you can adjust the width of it by moving from just the corner to the whole thing and its often softer than the plastic used on the external hdd case. I use it all the time to undo clips on laptops. Works a treat and from my experience didn't mark like metal tools do.

This video keeps on giving, just opened 16 TB version, Exos X16 ST16000NM001G inside. More or less the same process, I kept my screwdriver vertical to the seam, gently pulled it along the seam with one hand and rotated the screwdriver some 45-90 degrees with another every cm or so (half an inch) listening for the pops. Took about a minute, 2 of some 25 clips survived the process. Wandering how long before someone posts "Just opened 1 PB version" ...

Thank you for this video. Another use case scenario: Since these Seagate external enclosures do not have an actual power switch, one might be inclined to remove the drive from these, and put in a proper enclosure that has a power switch. Relying on buggy power saving features of operating systems isn't always best.

Nice tutorial...clear and concise. No music drowning out the voice. Well done! Thanks. My issue is that the data connection is unstable: sometimes the drive disconnects, and I must jiggle the connector, until the pilot light comes back on, and connection is restored. The wire is OK, and the power cable registers a steady 12VDC. Since the female connector is fixed to the circuit board inside, looks like I need to salvage the drive and discard the enclosure (poor quality control by Seagate). But I will try cutting back the plastic on the male plug, so that it mates better with the recessed jack. Sigh!

I bought the 10TB one a little while back, and the speed is just NOT up to snuff. Kinda took me back to the LaCie external drive I bought in the early 2000's, but that one was atrociously slow, this in comparison was blazingly fast. I digress, this worked well, it's in my PC now, and I was able to put an empty 4TB drive in the external case (just to have some wiggleroom, lol), with very little battle scars. Got it pieced back together, and it still works with another HDD, just had to delete the volume.

Does the USB-SATA PCB do hardware encryption? That is, will we be able to read the data if we disassemble it and plug it into our PC's SATA? Many hard disks's USB-SATA converter do a hardware encryption such that the data is not readable if you take them out and you have to re-format them.

I did this with 2 3TB Seagate External drives in 2013 and both worked fine up until this month where one of them just all of a sudden just started making a clicking noise and died. The other one is still working fine though. The price for the external drives at the time was way cheaper than if I was to buy the drives as bare OEM drives. Even with one of them failing after 6 years of use I more than got my moneys worth from the drives. The drives them selves are actually fairly fast big file copies from one to the other drive was normally around 140-195 Megabytes a second so no real complaints with the performance. I guess the 7200 RPM spin rate and decent cache on these drives helped a lot with the performance. I have since replaced the 1 failed 3TB drive with a 8TB Seagate drive and it actually feels a bit slower probably because of the 5400-5900 RPM rate but the cache is at least 256 Megabytes. The new drive seems to only sustain 115-185 Megabytes so a bit slower than the older 3TB 7200 Drives.

Worked great. I used a box cutter razor to start and a flathead screwdriver to pry apart. I opened the case because the Seagate 8TB drive inside had failed, and I wanted to try a different USB interface to see if that was the problem. The new interface kit didn't get a tone recognition from my laptop when I plugged in the USB. I reinstalled the old one and it did get the tone, even though the drive wasn't recognized because it had failed. Not sure if that has any significance, but thought I'd mention it.

I think it is used to hold the USB board aligned to the hard drive during assembly. I would save it (stick it to the inside of the plastic cover) in case it's needed when you attach another drive into the external case. That way you can find it if you need to reapply it.
@ruedigersyt2 жыл бұрын
Another good reason to get the drive out of the case: The outside USB-connector was damaged by a jerk on the cable, and now has connectivity issues. Thus, the only way to continue using the drive is "outside of the box", so without the enclosure.

Market segmentation, if they start to sell average quality high capacity HDDs for cheap they will sell less expensive enterprise HDDs, yes enterprise HDDs have SAS and are way more reliable but if a consumer grade HDD with the same capacity costs 4 times less then it becames the better buy thanks to most servers having lots of redundancy.

@BartechTV3 жыл бұрын
It depends if it's the drive itself that is broken, or the SATA to USB bridge, or the cable, or the power supply. It could be many things. If the drive is still working you can just open up the enclosure, remove the drive and connect it to your computer by SATA. If the drive is broken then your only option is a data recovery service. Recovering data from a spinning hard drive isn't something that you can do yourself at home with a large chance of success.

@@gerbear3227 Open it up and see if the SATA-DATA bridge (the thing wiggled off in the vid) is loose. Could have also broken the connector, but there's no way to know unless you try. Just unplug it from the power first. Unplug and replug the bridge to see if it works again. If not, that likely means the platter on the inside of the drive was likely scratched by the read arm from the shock. There's not much that can be done there. Would just add that a prying tool makes it so much easier to get the case open.

It's ridiculous that an external HDD goes for $144, but the equivalent internal hdd cost is $155. Seagate, why are we pay $11 more for plastic we don't need? Many people are taking the shell off of these to use as an internal drive.
@Emexrulsier4 жыл бұрын
the drives inside external enclosures are actually quite slow speeds often even slower than 5200 and often have less cache and slower read/writes. Because they are on the USB bus its a waste to put a faster drive in that wont even get utilised.
@silentwitness5364 жыл бұрын
@@Emexrulsier True. Theses external seagate barracada 4tb ones are 5400rpm. Some of the other Seagate barracuda 4tb ones are 7200rpm (15% faster) which might (in not all cases) account for the price difference.
@fireblazer66613 жыл бұрын
@@Emexrulsier mine have mostly been 5400 rpm. But unless you want to pay a lot extra, you get a 5400 RPM INTERNAL drive as well. For example, right now I can buy an 8tb external... for 170 CDN +tax. BUT the internal is 195+tax (cheapest internal, still also ONLY 5400rpm) with a mediocre cache. So I'm trying to debate whether I wanna buy some 170 dollar drives or pay the extra 25 and get internals. Big drives are selling out fast because of that stupid CHIA cryptocurrency, so I feel like I should probably get 1 or 2 before they go sky high like video cards have... Now video cards that were 400 bucks are going for over 1000. So I can't afford to upgrade my PC now, because of bitcoin mining. sigh

and what do I do if my seagate disc has a metal shell around the bridge? the screws don't fit any standard screwdriver, and I can't cut it open. trying to retrieve my pictures of pets and relatives. :/
@kornflakes892 жыл бұрын
Get a non-standard screwdriver. Wal-Mart has a bunch of screwdriver sets and Hyper Tough brand tools are pretty cheap.

@@kornflakes89 could you perhaps tell me what a set would be called? we don't have wal-mart in the netherlands :(

Cross head screwdriver? That would be Phillips, just as round thing on neck would be head.

Thank you! The caddy died on me but the HDD is okay.

@David Jameson yeah, same thing happened to me. If I unplug everything and plug it back in then it sometimes temporarily works and then stops working again. I've never had a HDD break on me in all of my years, so I expect that it's the external enclosure that just needs to be replaced and I'll be trying that as soon as I receive a new one.
@Anonymous-gu2pk4 жыл бұрын
@David Jameson well, I managed to make a copy of all of the really important data (even though I had to keep reconnecting the drive multiple times), but I cannot rely on it anymore if the issue persists, so I am hoping that the new enclosure fixes the problem. If it doesn't then I'll just have to get a new drive. Either way, I always like to keep multiple copies of the most important irreplaceable data, because there's always something that could go wrong with one copy even without the hard drive failing.
@Anonymous-gu2pk4 жыл бұрын
@David Jameson so, I got a new generic enclosure and it has been working fine for a day, we'll see if it lasts, though. I saw another video about external hard drives breaking, because the cases are usually designed to be standing on the side (rather than laying flat on the desk) and if they fall over while in use then something may break. I've never had that happen, so I had no reason to suspect a broken HDD, but if someone else has problems after knocking the drive over then they should know in advance that it's probably not going to be a very easy fix.

The cheapest 4Tb internal 3.5" drive I can find is $150. I can buy the Seagate external 4Tb drive for $99. Makes no sense to me considering you get a USB3.0 case chucked in for nothing and it's still 50 dollars cheaper. I'm off to butcher an external drive today.
@BartechTV3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. It's never made any sense to me why external drives are cheaper. I'm sure there must be some logic to it somewhere but I just can't see it.
@hypersphereengineering60153 жыл бұрын
@@BartechTV I think the reason is that people don't buy them and external drives are easy to setup. Most people nowadays would buy a new computer before opening it up to swap a drive. I've been pulling computers apart for over 20 years so it's no big deal. Just got back from the shops with my external drive. It took me 5 minutes to remove it. Now I just need to install into my desktop and install an operating system. I ended up getting a 4TB Seagate like your video. Exact same case, had to kind of damage the case to get it open. They used to be screwed now they have plastic bloody clips . Don't care though , it's an internal drive now !!
