The ref. had never seen a knee bar before apparently. Break in the middle of a submission attempt in today's MMA would mean the last match for any ref.

Cant believe I thought to search Bas and I manage to pick just as he is uploading all his fights. Everyone loves Bas for his personality so to hear them commentated is great, also helpful for people like me who aren't very knowledgeable about the technical side of MMA.

The reason the referee stopped the fight in those positions was because the fighters were on the ropes. This was fixed in PRIDE - where the referee would just scoot the fighters away from the ropes or have ringside officials pull back the ropes for more space/push the fighters back in, away from the ropes or place them in the center of the ring in the same position they were in or in some instances just let the fight continue without intervention. Pancrase referees would just restart the fight completely with both guys back in the standing position. When they would do this it wouldn't count as a rope escape because neither fighter wouldn't reach and grab the bottom rope. This was done to avoid the fighters from falling out of the ring or getting stuck in between the ropes.
