Base-Model Hyundai Tucson Crash Test FAIL with ZERO STARS (Latin America Model 2 Airbags)

Hi guys! The 2021 Hyundai Tucson, manufactured in South Korea, with 2 frontal airbags as standard and no standard ESC achieved zero stars under Latin NCAP latest protocols.
The Hyundai Tucson was tested in frontal impact, side impact, whiplash and pedestrian protection. The model showed good performance in the frontal impact and side impact for the adult protection, however, the lack of standard side head protection airbags limited the car to get better scoring. Whiplash protection was good. The bodyshell and footwell area were rated as stable. Child occupant protection performance was poor because the Tucson surprisingly has lap belt in the rear centre seating position as standard and also because Hyundai declined to select the Child Restraint Systems (CRS) for the tests. Pedestrian protection was over all average with poor protection to upper leg protection and low score in the head, this car does not offer Autonomous Emergency Braking for Venerable Road Users as an attempt to compensate the pedestrian protection described before in order to avoid or mitigate the impact. Safety assist showed only SBR points. The car does not offer ESC as standard as well as other relevant technologies. Optional safety equipment would certainly offer better protection and Latin América offered Hyundai to test the new version of the Tucson but the manufacturer declined the offer.
The Tucson version tested by Latin NCAP clashed in time with the new version of the model. Latin NCAP purchased the unit tested in February 2021 as Hyundai’s official representatives in 3 relevant countries confirmed that the new Tucson for Latin America was at least 2 years away. Things developed differently and the new Tucson came in to Latin NCAP during 2021. This does not invalidate this result as there are many “old” Tucsons still available as new or as second hand which can be purchased by consumers.

Its 5 stars in the other markets, no intrusion with passenger compartment holding up extremely well. There are still many countries where full safety equipment is not required due to cost. Maybe you test some other brands sold in latin america with front airbags only.

Not due to cost, many are due to primitive law making and not adding these by law as they would increase the prices and people couldn't afford them easily. Yes cost, but with the consumer pockets in mind not the company having to increase costs

6 airbags are standard in Europe, USA, Japan...but Hyundai prefers offering alloy wheels as basic equipment.

They need to have the same safety standards as North American cars, but then the price will be too high for Latin America so base models like this exists

I'm pretty sure that cars in most Latin American countries are more expensive than in USA but way less equiped... the price is not the problem, car manufacturers just take a bigger profit in LA.

I just ordered this car, the 2022 Tucson limited hybrid, in September and it's coming in January 2022. It has loads of airbags including side airbags. Airbags for the back seat airbags that come down from the ceiling airbags from every place. I ordered it because of all it's great comfort for the driver and front passenger seat as well as back passengers, but mainly because of its safety features. Please don't go by one test. I don't even know who these people are doing this test

It clearly indicates that the tested model is a base model in the title. The base model lacks the features a higher trim level such as the limited has. That’s why the base model Tuscon performs poorly whereas a higher trim level does not. NCAP is one of the biggest companies that test safety of all makes of vehicles. This is also a South American test with a South American model. These models do not require some safety features due to regulation. US regulation requires many safety features that they don’t, even in the base model.

@@amark3721 not sure if '22 has been tested, but the channel listing "2021-2022 model" in the description of the video is flat out wrong and may lead them in hot water. It's not a '22. It's the last year of the previous gen, '21.

I think you need to further edit the video and the title to clearly indicate that the vehicle you tested is for the Latin American model, and NOT for the North American model. When people see NCAP most people immediately think of US models and not “Latin NCAP”, especially since you specially state that the vehicle was manufactured in South Korea which doesn’t really have anything to do with the lack of side air bags

Can someone please explain why this test was "0 Stars" and a "Fail"? There is a disconnect between those scores and what I see in this video. Was there a mix-up?

Because it has no side airbags, no stability control and Hyundai didn't recommend child seats, so the score was very low. The structure was rated good.

@@MrChristopherMolloy new ncap standards score rhe stars based of the lowest protection type Here we have 7% for active safety systems almost nothing, hence 0 stars This way they rate and raise awareness of where the cars fall short of expectations the most. It may be 3-4 stars in many accidents But that 7% when needed and if it happens and they are non existent it's going to end badly

These tests aren’t based on damage to the vehicle, they’re based on occupant safety. A vehicle can sustain limited damage while injuring its occupants.

Not based on damage, if the inside protection is bad, they won't even consider it (eg. if chest and head damage is too high), some NCAPs do "safety tech" tests, such as ESC efficiency, emergency brake, etc.

Hyundai equip the Tucson in some sountry with only 2 airbag and no traction control in base model, thus 0 stars for ALL latin american market. Hyundai could do much better, the cost it's not the problem here as they stated: "Our cars meets the standars regulation in all country"

La verdad es que yo ya no le tengo confianza al latinncap. Probaron esa versión (de 2 airbags en lugar de 6) que solo se vende en un país (ya no recuerdo cual) cuando los Wolkswagen siempre los prueban en su versión mas equipada aunque haya una con 2 airbags. También, la protección para niños fue tan baja porque Hyundai no les recomendó ningún asiento y eso lo contaron como que es incompatible con la mayoría de sillas.

Korean car maker needed to got it right, but thanks to our USDOT and NHTSA ready tested for our safety-rating each vehicle sold in America. We can’t drive without our safety first. Many Russian citizens came to auction dealers for used vehicles that sold in America and shipped to Russia, Africa, Cambodia, Argentina, etc. because the safety well regulated.

Good point. Without American market Hyundai and KIA will consequently diminish safety factors on the cars to maximize their profits, and they already does it to korean customers. As a korean citizen zero score on safety makes me desperate but good.

No matter the brand. No car will ever get full scores for any base variant. You have to understand how NCAP scoring works. Safety engineers when designing a car have to adhere to strict safety related design guidelines. No matter the trim variant. The car was designed to make sure you survive in a crash. Each supplementary restrain safety system feature in a car except for a few airbags and the seatbelts are optional.

This is the old model and has been replaced. This is NOT the 2021-2022 model as listed in the description. This is the 2021 and earlier model, nothing to do with the 2022. Interesting timing of this video, when the MY22 is on lots already... Saying "2021-2022" in the video description may land the channel in hot water, because it is not a '22.

They don’t sell exactly the same car in every market. In Latin America, they’re still selling the prior generation, and without the many airbags that are required in some other markets.

Aside from the crash test I think per media reports one needs to worry about the potential of engine fires in these products as there really seems to be no true fix...either way good luck!

The 2017 had a bad rod bearing ( possible fire, but unlikely)which was fixed on all of them. 2018 to 2020 had a bad ABS pump which could catch fire of which all have been replaced. No fix? Those are all easily fixed.

It's a shame that cars for Latin countries are less save than in other parts of the world. The safety features excists but are just not installed in the car. Every base model should have base safety which for me means ALL safety features available. Please explain to all people killed due to car accidents why this is not the case .

"Same" models, purchased all around the world, are built in different factories, not only in other countries, but on other continents. For example, North America might have cars from Mexican factory, but in Asia they might receive their cars from Europe (Germany). So for North Americans posting on the poor product quality is not really the case - it depends in which factory they were made!

Did you even see how the passengers hit the side of the car on lateral impact? More than a save looks like collapsed lungs and head contusion, and that's without adding the lack of stability control systems and Pedestrian protection systems, that's a complete fail but if you're eager enough to get inside a go-kart, then you might enjoy driving this one too 🤣

So you're saying European and Australian lives are superior instead? 1 Latin NCAP star implies a 40% security, that means the South American variant of this truck didn't even score a 40% security rating. Nothing. Latin American government doesn't give a shit about unsafe cars. That's why there are so many deaths caused by car crashes in Latin America. The Tsuru is the unsafest car in the world and it was discontinued on 2017 but still, its the most common car in Mexico. Literally 90% of the taxis in Mexico are 0 or 1 star rated cars.

Obviously there are much countries in Latin America, but none of them require a minimum grade in security tests.The most that is done is in some countries if the minimum basic safety equipment is required. In Brazil, for example, a minimum of 2 front airbags, ESC, ABS, Isofix, etc. is required. But unfortunately also , most people here do not care much about the safety of their cars when they go shopping , they care more about technology and beauty .

This is FALSE!!!! That is not the new Tucson!! B.S. stuff. The 2021 has a very unique running lights design. Another tell is the rear wiper. On the 2021 it is hidden in the overhang at the top of the back window. This is clearly seen at the bottom. I have driven at least 100 of these in the past year.

Because the Tuscon has different versions sold in different countries. Most car manufacturers don't have all safety features standard outside of '1st world' nations.

Ah yes, it's Hyundai's fault for selling a car stripped of its supplemental safety restraint systems.. wait, who the hell in their right minds would sell these to their people? Shame on Latin government and Hyundai for allowing such malpractice and disregard for human lives.

Like someone else said, I'd be more worried about the engine fires/failures that Hyundai/Kia is known for. My first Kia/Hyundai was my last, too many engine recalls and issues.

0 звезд потому что автоматом 0, если нет 6 подушек. Здесь нетбоковых шторок, ну так это местный закон разрешает, где конкретнотакие комплектации продаются. В россии машины продавались с боковыми шторками в любой комплектации, по этому тесту 4+

I hate this channel. They don’t say WHY the rating is what it is. The safety cage held up well, dummy movement was well controlled. So what happened? Footwell intrusion? Poor side performance? What were the readings on the dummies? Hellooooo?
