0:34 Not trying to attack you, but people need to know what the term "third world country" really means and learn why the term is very outdated in the 21st century. The "third world" was a Cold War-era term for countries not in the "first world" aligned with the U.S. and the West and not in the "Second World" aligned with the Soviet Union and the communist bloc, which is why Cuba is not a "third world" country but a "second world" country. The Cold War ended more than 30 years ago, and we really should leave the term "third world" in the past as well. The more accurate term is "developing country" or just low-income country.

What's really sad is that after 16 kids from the DR are no longer considered prospects. That's the real tragedy here. If that kid was in the states, or almost anywhere else, being 21 yrs old wouldn't be an issue and he'd still be considered a top prospect.

This is insane for a bunch of reasons. American kids get screwed because of these strange international rules. An american kid has to go thru high school, college and the draft and then team has control of him and hes making peanuts for the first 6 years? International player lies about age and gets $4 million bonus? International players should get drafted too. Im not sure how the players union is seen as the strongest union in the world and allow this to happen. American kids get screwed by there own league. In the Japanese league they only allow a few american players per team to help japanese players while MLB ios ok screwing american players. How is the union not doing something about this? My step son is 5 and was born in colombia. My step son would be better off being a bad international player than a great american player. It makes zero sense. An american player has to play amazing baseball for a 10 year stretch to get the amount of money an international player gets for being good for only 1 year when hes 16. Every other sport has international players enter a draft and no other league has issues with birth certificates. The birth certificate excuse is an excuse. I dont know what its like in the dominican republic but in Colombia birth Certificates are certified with seals and you have to go in person to the city you were born to get them. None of this makes sense and the Baseball union is literally insane for allowing the mlb to screw american players. Just to show how insane this is Paul Skenes got a $9 million bonus while this unknown 16-21 year old dominican got a $4 million bonus. The number 15 pick of this years draft got a $5 million bonus and after him the other picks got below $4 million.
@darthbauer515319 күн бұрын
Players can get to the draft earlier in America as well and boost their bonuses if they choose, Bryce Harper set a blueprint for it and no one has followed suit. I do agree that international rules are too lax when compared to US/Canadian prospects though. I think the fairer way would be to just have an international amateur draft. Posting of professionals is fine imo it’s the amateur situation that’s way too “Wild West”. I don’t like the idea of rewarding dropping out of school to compete so allowing players in younger in America seems problematic for American youth while the current system is problematic for Dominican youths. Need to better prioritize becoming good adults before they start exploiting them.
@cptjockitch18 күн бұрын
@@darthbauer5153 The MLB wants everyone to think that everywhere except the usa is a 3rd world country and dont have real birth certificates. Its crazy that no NBA international player has lied on there birth certificate but in the mlb an entire country "dominican republic" is in on the certificate scam. The nba has been drafting players out of africa for years with no issues. The MLB is either in on the scam or just plain dumb. When players want to come to the united states they have to fill out paper work for a visa. They dont just give those out to anyone. You have to do interviews for the visa and passport. Real paper work is needed. Is it possible players have found a way to lie and cheat the system? possible but highly improbable. These international players need to be drafted. its the only way to make it fair for american players. Why does a japanese pitcher make $300 million in his first contract while the number 1 pick makes pennies for his first 6 years? Im not saying rookies should get $300 million but international players shouldnt be making millions.
@asianbeowulf427617 күн бұрын
There isn’t a large available pool of american players for NPB and the ones that do want to play there are not automatically skilled enough to be able to compete with NPB talent. Good on NPB for protecting Japanese players from being squeezed out by foreign mercenaries.

Cuba's actually a "second world" country, based on the original meaning of the term. The West (Europe and it's settler colonies + Japan) is the first world and the Soviet aligned or communist countries the is second world. The third world were countries that were not industrialized and didn't fall into either category (non-aligned during the Cold War).

If you were from another country you could get hundreds of thousands of dollars just as a prospect but you will get pennies on the dollar if you’re a Dominican kid or from any number of impoverished countries. Teams know if they throw 10,000 dollars at some kid it will be more than that kid has ever seen but in other countries no one is dropping out of school because they got 10k. It seems kinda shady.
