Sadman Baseball

2 жыл бұрын

Baseball has a problem. It's too optimized. Statheads like me have boiled down baseball's value into three true outcomes: Home runs, strikeouts and walks.
But what if we had a way to measure the things that baseball fans actually enjoy from a player? What if we could put a number on a players entertainment value like we do their WAR? I've developed a statistic that does just that.
This video takes you on the journey of the creation of the new baseball stat that can help identify players who are fun to watch. And isn't that the idea? shouldn't baseball be fun to watch?

After watching the Mariners in 2021, them playing a season which ended in heartbreak, playing game after game that failed to take them to the promised land they’ve been chasing since before I was born, and loving every second of it? This isn’t stats, it’s art.

Speaking as a Yankee fan, I enjoyed the mariners more so than my own team. The Yankees don’t have good fundamentals and the pressure to win constantly (when even I knew they most likely would lose in the playoffs) made it a drag. Also Two wife beaters were on the team so there’s that. But the Mariners?!? They gave me the most fun the entire season. And the emotion they showed at the end made me feel sorrow and joy for them.

For pitchers, I think it’d be interesting to see how few funs they allow. Their funness is derived from stopping hitters from creating fun. Like the Monstars basketball that stole the powers of NBA stars, they become fun by robbing the fun of their opponent. Opponent’s FUNS Against per 9

Hi Sadman Baseball! Yet again another great video, but I wanted to know why you didn't opt to use catch probability as a metric for determining defensive funness. It's a readily available stat from baseballsavant and I think would've been useful in helping better to define funness for outfielders as most low catch probabilities happen with diving catches (and are exciting because they're unexpected catches to be made). Though, as it is just for outfielders (and there is no "infield reach probability") I could see as that would've unfairly weighted outfielders more than infielders. Have fun and stay fun! My Best, Ethan!
@SadmanBaseball
@SadmanBaseball 2 жыл бұрын
Excellent observation, TheEthanSem. I definitely considered it. But if I did use this and only on outfielders, I didn't know how to give equal value to infielders. outfielders would then be way more fun than infielders unless i chose a stat for them too. I couldn't think of one for infielders. So I decided on a stat that measures every aspect. Your critique is incredibly fair and I agree that those difficult catches are SUPER fun.
@netsch20
@netsch20 2 жыл бұрын
@@SadmanBaseball The flip side to this is that it shouldn't necessarily be the case that all players get to have the same "chance" to have a high FunScore, at least from a defensive standpoint. Like, obviously 1B isn't gonna be a very fun position so if we're aiming to say who is, as an entire package, a more fun player then clearly a outfielder will be more fun during the half of the game playing defense. So if that 1B wants to be considered more fun, they better be unbelievably fun as a hitter to make up for it, but that shouldn't be a knock against an OF.

I obsess over baseball and i’m on twitter frequently, but the arguments and hatred and negativity that have blossomed out of out “statistics” is really hurtful to the game. One of the most entertaining baseball videos I have seen all year. As a person that uses R for work everyday I did appreciate the montage. Can't help to point out the WPA+ while scaled to be positive number still captures negative outcomes to my knowledge. Awesome video bro. As an aspiring analyst, I love this video because of how you use statistics to objectively examine something so subjective, and also hate this video because it was such a great idea i wish i had. I love the ending too, where you talk about how an overemphasis on Sabermetrics is making the game boring. It’s an interesting dilemma in the game. It sucks to see less and less stolen bases every year, especially when we have guys like Fernando or Acuna who have the possibility of setting records if it wasn’t for a largely Sabermetric approach to the game now. It’s interesting to ponder whether playing “optimal” baseball really has been good for the game or not. Haven’t seen any of your videos until now and have subscribed very enthusiastically

Yes good video🤩 good points and for flips sake it doesnt matter if the stat is perfect... it is good for us to try and discuss why and how baseball is fun, and this video and stat certainly adds to that convo

A gem of a channel to stumble upon, I was surprised at some of the names at first but the more I thought about it the more I thought that you got it about right. P.S. Byron Buxton is definitely super fun to watch

Up front, I don't watch baseball other than occasionally come playoff time. However, KZbin videos and channels like yours and Foolish Bailey and others give me a reason to care about it and tune in even from a relatively outsider, casual perspective. Consider me a fan of what you're doing for as long as you choose to do it. Bravo 👏

I seriously can't believe you only have 10k subscribers with this excellent content you produce! I can see you being the next Foolish Baseball or SB nation EDit: You might also want to add a seizure warning somewhere, as there are lots of flashing lights and colors.
@SadmanBaseball
@SadmanBaseball 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks MrTheBigNoze, I put a warning before the Natural Anthem portion of the video, but you're right, there are some other parts that could use it. From now on I think I'm just going to put that warning at the beginning of my videos, because lets be real, every video is essentially a seizure waiting to happen.
