This was a fun reaction. There actually are a few situations in baseball when you do have to run the wrong way on the basepath, like if you are running the bases and a fielder catches a batted ball before it hits the ground, you have to go back to the base you started on and retouch it, before you can legally advance to the next base (that’s called tagging up). Whichever way you run on the basepath, you have to touch each base each time you pass it. So players do sometimes run the wrong way, but it’s often because they or a baserunner ahead of them made a mistake. Once a player has reached a base safely and legally, there should be no reason for them to run back to the previous base. At least not any good reason.

Pitchers are creatures of habit, don't ever mess with a pitcher's routine. Also, even though teams play 162 games a year, a starting pitcher will only play in around 30-35.

The bat boy is the person that collects the bat from home plate when someone gets a hit and runs away without their bat. Usually each team has 1. That term just gets applied incorrectly to other helper positions around the field, which would normally be called ball boy or ball girl.

If the ball is caught you have to got back to the base you were on, so yes, you do run the wrong way sometimes, guys get in run downs to avoid tags all the time

It absolutely killed me that BDE didn't recognize Motley Crue's "Kickstart my Heart" at 5:38. If you've ever been to any sporting event in the US, the intro to that song is likely to be played and it's probably the most recognizable "bwwaaaaaaa" in music, not "the most random sound ever heard."

Exactly!! Actually a ton of people never recognized that that was the opening riff of Kickstart My Heart 😂 I’m from Phoenix and I remember them talking about that moment on our local sports talk radio the next day, and I think only noted metal/hard rock fan Ron “Wolf” Wolfley said he recognized it 🤘

The Pirates not tagging 1b for the out and instead chasing Baez back to the batter's box will always be what I consider to be the dumbest play. It's dumb in every way possible. The number of players who completely lacked awareness of the game situation and managed to forget the basic rules of the sport was absolutely astounding. Even Baez, after somehow making the Pirates forget how to play baseball, celebrated the baserunner being safe at home before running to 1b where if he didn't reach 1b safely the run doesn't even count.

Base runners go half way on fly balls. If the ball is caught they return to the base. So yes, running back to a base is part of the game.

Ball Boys (Now mainly Ball Girls) will sometimes stop a line drive into the crowd saving someone from facial surgery at the very least. You should do a compilation on Ball Girls they do amazing stuff.

Players do have to run the bases backwards sometimes. When a fly ball is caught, each baserunner must retouch the last base where he was safe before the ball was hit. Players will often go partway to the next base, and if the ball is caught they'll retreat. I've even seen it happen where a runner runs past the next base, then has to retreat when a fly ball is caught. Even on a ground ball, there are plenty of situations where a runner will retreat - for instance, if he's on second base, first base is empty, and the batter hits a ground ball to third base, the runner will retreat to second to avoid being tagged out while off his base. I was at a game once when a fan ran onto the field and led the security guards on a chase that lasted several minutes. He ended up near second base. The second base umpire had apparently had enough, and picked the guy up and body slammed him. The video doesn't mention two of the dumbest promotions of all time: Disco Demolition Night and Ten Cent Beer Night. In the first, fans were encouraged to bring disco records to the game. The fans were supposed to put all the records into a big bin, and the whole mess blown up at some point. Instead, the fans kept the records and sailed them onto the field like Frisbees. The home team had to forfeit because all the flying records made it impossible to play the game. The second promotion, Ten Cent Beer Night, was just what it sounds like. The home team was selling beers for ten cents each. Lots of fans got very drunk very fast, and conditions deteriorated into a near-riot. The home team had to forfeit in this one, too.

You run one direction to advance, but there are times you are not permitted to advance, and you might not know them immediately. If you advance around the bases, and then it turns out you weren't allowed to do that, you have to go back, and you have to touch all the bases again the the reverse order. This is why you'll see runners advance partway to the next base and then wait to see whether the play permits them to advance. If it does, they keep going. If it doesn't, they go back. But if they misunderstand what's happening (as Lloyd Moseby did - he mistook a thrown ball for a batted ball), they might go the wrong direction.

When I was a child, they used to have "Bat Day" at Yankee Stadium in NY... It's the late 1970's... the Bronx is literally burning down... violent crime is rampant... and in the South Bronx, the most dangerous place in America at the time, they gave 55,000 fans a full size baseball bat. Not a plastic toy bat... a wooden bat that you could use in a game! And they wondered why all the cars in the neighborhood had smashed windows that night

My dad said he remembers they did that in San Diego for a dodgers game and since the dodgers always flood out of hand (and are quick to start a fight) it ensured the end of mini bat night

They're called bat boys because their original job was to collect the bat when a batter hits the ball and starts running to first. It's an important job, because sometimes the bat might roll onto the third base line, and if a runner's coming from third... The giants' elderly balldudes comes on the heels of *the same team* having the manager's son do it... which would have been fine, if the manager's son weren't three years old. He actually *did* wind up in the way of a runner scoring from third, who fortunately was paying attention and had enough time to bend over and snatch him out of the way, as it fortunately wasn't a close play at the plate. Oh, and this happened in the world series on national TV>

The narrator seemed to not be able to recognize what the poor sound guy accidentally blared over the PA, but that was definitely the very start of Kickstart My Heart by Motley Crue. It was probably someone's walk up music he was getting cued up and had a little oopsie. I've done similar jobs (no higher than college stadium and arenas) and had my moments.

One of baseball's dumbest moments happened just the other day when Max Scherzer got thrown out of a game for using an MLB supplied substance (rosin) on his hands, and following the umpires instructions to wash his hands.. which he did in front of an MLB official.. Anyone who has pitched and used rosin knows.. rosin + sweat + sticky And now he's suspended for 10 games

Those are actually ball boys not bat boys. Bat boys hang out in the dugout and pick up bats when a player hits the ball or brings him a new one if he breaks his bat. Ball boys retrieve foul balls that are hit up the line to keep the game going.

I can't believe the dudes ran the wrong way on the bases. I mean I saw it, but I can't imagine they were as stupid as they were. The Lonnie Smith fake-out at 2nd base wasn't so much Smith being stupid as Chuck Knobloch making a great fake of a throw. It was aided by being in the Metrodome in Minneapolis which had a white fabric roof, which made the ball notoriously hard to follow. Incidentally, that 1991 World Series was arguably the most exciting World Series ever.

There are 17 games in a NFL season and possibly 21 depending on how they perform in the playoffs it used to be 16 but a few years ago they made the season longer (sorry if this sounds petty )

I think 10 cent beer night in Cleveland in 1974 was pretty stupid. Look it up. The drunk fans stormed the field and rioted and the Indians had to forfeit.

I don't think that it's the game that is to long per se. These guys play 162 games a year and that's not counting the pre season and post season. I am sure that you will lose focus from time to time when you play 162 games in 180 days.
