Hi Guys,
I do a outdoor gear review of the Osprey Aether 65 L and compare it to the Atmos 65 L . Both packs appear similar but have some differences that make them completely different backpacks. Osprey packs are well made and have many great features as well as a super comfortable suspension.

This was exactly what I was looking for. A good comparison between the atmos and aether series and a close look at the features. I made my mind and am going to purchase the aether mainly because they come in a bigger size than 65 liters. Also digging the front access panel to the main compartment. That alone will save me time having to unpack and repack and making adjustments to my main compartment. Awesome video!

There is an updated Aether "Plus" in 60, 70, 85 and 100 (& Arial Plus too). Looks like it now has the trekking pole carry, similar to the Atmos 65. On top of that, it has a removal day lid that can convert to a small day pack, as well as the integrated flap jack cover, again like the Atmos has; I assume it's easier to remove the lid now too, but couldn't tell for sure. But the price went up quite a bit. The 60L retails at $340 and goes up from there for the larger liter packs. There is also the Aether AG 85, which appears to be a sort of a Frankenstein of the Aether back and hip belt along with the shoulder straps and partial hip/back webbing of the Atmos but, it's on sale now, so I assume it's on its way out and being replaced by the new Aether and Arial Plus lineups; the Aether Plus 85 can carry 5 more lbs than the Aether AG 85 version. And there is the Aether Pro, but perhaps that's a slightly different comparison. Anyway, I have the Atmos 65 and may upgrade to one of the Aethers, as I need to be able to carry heavier loads (the Atmos 65 doesn't take kindly to overloading, but is a great pack and I like it very much otherwise.)

The older Aether packs had the toplid that converts to a day pack. I believe they used the AG system as well. It was my dream pack, as I really loved the idea of the convertible top lid. The new one is not appealing enough to make me switch from my Atmos 65 AG, which I absolutely love.
@basecampchris

Hi Sean, I think the Aether 70 has a convertible top lid. But the Atmos is a better pack I think. I love the 2 outside large zippered pockets over the large open panel to the inside main compartment that the Aether has.

Hey, thanks for the review. I have just bought an Atmos ag 65. As the one you reviewed in the video the font style of the "anti gravity " and "Atmos ag 65" has been changed. At first I thought it was a fake one but the rest of the bag proves its a genuine osprey item. I prefer the old font style and the vertical letters on the right arm strap. Sad they changed the design.. but still a great backpack. Cheers. K

I love the suspension system of the Atmos, but (for me) it has one design flaw that is a deal-breaker. It has limited main front compartment access, unlike the Aether. If you need to reach something in the middle or bottom of your pack you must go down from the top or try and find items from the side zippered access point. That gets to be a pain. This design makes it much more difficult to reach gear that might be at the bottom or middle of your pack. Especially, larger gear. You can't, for example place a camera cube with photo gear and long lenses in the main compartment and easily access them like the Aether. I do like the TMP (webbing) that rests against your back found on the Atmos, which helps with airflow and to prevent sweating on hot days. Unfortunately, the Aether doesn't have that design, although it's design isn't too bad. For my needs I ended up buying the Gregory Zulu which has the TMP web backing and also easy access to the main compartment for my camera gear and hiking gear. It's very comfortable and has lots of pockets and straps. If Osprey made the Atmos with front opening, in addition to the top opening I would have bought the Atmos. I think the suspension system on the Atmos is just a little bit better than the Gregory Zulu, although the Zulu's is pretty comfortable, especially their hip belt. The Atmos is a great pack and for most people it will work well, but for me and what I needed I had to pass.

I bought an REI rain cover size large for my Atmos 65L. $35. Atmos is intended to be a hot weather summer backpack whereas the Aether is intended to be a cold-weather winter backpack. More reason to have a rain cover for freezing cold rain, sleet, snow, and hail. Aether has two large straps for snowshoeing or crampons. Atmos has decent hip support so the weight is distributed to backpackers hips instead of neck, shoulders, and back. If you are looking for a smaller version day pack then get the Kestrel for winter and the Stratos for summer day hikes.

Hi Chris - you might have reviewed an older (2021?) version of the atmos. Mine bought end of 2022 has a rain cover included (in the bottom section) and perhaps more importantly the main compartment can not only be accessed from the top but also from both sides via zippers near its frame. What’s missing in the newer edition is the flap to seal the top of the backpack once the removable top lid is detached. Fun to see how you almost disappeared between both bags. 😂

Just picked up the Aether 85L Plus a few weeks ago. Doing a two day 23 Mile hike this weekend to test out! I see some differences on the 65L compared to the 85L Plus. The brain is clipped onto the bag in the front and the back, makes it a lot easier to take off, rain fly is on the bottom instead of the top, it has two separate long pockets on the sides of your front rain gear pocket, and it has the store on the go trekking poles. A comparison review would be neat to see!

I bought the aether because I got it pretty cheap. The anti gravity works very well. My only complaint is the hip belt digs in a bit. I'm thinking it will eventually break in. I like osprey and I'm very happy with it but it would be nice to try a Gregory just for comparison. I started with a budget pack around $60 it was ok but I wish I would of started at the top. can u do a review and comparison of the aether plus 60? it has the same daypack as previous ag model. Also they have the stow and go function, dual large zipper on top of the mid access zipper, dedicated rainfly pocket on the bottom and the same mesh pocket on the outside.

I have the aether 65 AG and its interesting to see what they removed and what they didn’t! I always try to search the difference. I cant remember if the atmos can take the lid and turn it into a daypack but for some reason on your videos it always seems like the atmos has more cargo space than the aether because of the 2 front pockets
@basecampchris

Love the 2 front pockets...it does not convert to a daypack, but is easier to remove with the clips.

It's a shame they seem to be marketing one for men and one for women. They both seem like fine unisex packs people should be selecting based on the features they want rather than gender. Thanks for another great video, Chris.

I thought the same until I learned the women's version straps are designed differently to better fit female body types...mainly in the chest and torso area. You can clearly see the difference in the shape of the harness if you compare them side by side. After learning this was the case, and heard reviews by women who experienced much better fit and comfort, I was quite impressed with Osprey's innovation.

Great video, Chris. The deciding factors for me were the multiple access points to the main compartment and the removable daypack of the Aether. Have to ask though, is this Aether you have a non-AG version? Because the one I bought (link below) has the AG suspension system. Had no idea it came in another variety. This Ather seems just like the AG version but with less features! No flap, no daypack. Maybe another video of both AG varieties? Looking forward to it! www.amazon.com/Osprey-AG-60-Backpacking-Backpack/dp/B07QG5WJB1

Yes...a little confusing the Aether AG comes in the 60/70 and 85L with the Anti Gravity and the removal top lid that converts to a day pack....where as the Aether 65 has a Air scape back panel and no day pack added.

I bought an REI rain cover size large for my Atmos 65L. $35. Atmos is intended to be a hot weather summer backpack whereas the Aether is intended to be a cold weather winter backpack. More reason to have a rain cover for freezing cold rains, sleet, snow, hail.
