Basenji Baroo and Other Noises

We couldn't find a good video of Basenji noises when we wanted to show friends what our Holly sounds like so we made our own! For those that don't know Basenjis are barkless dogs but still make plenty of noises. The closest thing they have to a bark is the "baroo" noise featured in this video. Holly is a 4.5 month old female so the tone may not be the same as a full grown adult but this should serve as a good example of the weird sounds Basenji's make.

Reminds me so much of Biscuit, my friend and instructor Randy's dog that always used to come with us during survival classes and was our sort of mascot and "team pet". She was a basenji who was solid tan and was very friendly towards those who were kind to her and in our group as she was trained to be, but quite protective and a good hunter (bringing back a number of squirrels and sometimes snakes) and guard dog. Always used to make noises like this whenever she met new people she liked or was particularly playful, but made a downbeat and growling version if she sensed danger (usually snakes in the form of venomous copperheads, which was good for us). Snake got her a year after I went off to college and it was one of the most upsetting things ever. Even though they can't bark in a traditional way, these are really sweet and neat dogs. :)

My basenji barely baroos or yodels only when she REALLY happy like if we see her after a while or if we pick jer up when she knows she’s in trouble

She's REALLY light colored for a red and white. Is it because of the camera or does she really look that color?

That’s all my dog lady when she is playful. Other times, when she is not playful, things can get s lil... how do I put this.. violent with my other basenji rascals. Rascal is a black brown and white one. Their cousins

Why do I keep seeing people doing this silly hand slapping stuff with their dogs? It's a terrible training technique, engaging the dog with your hands and having the dog respond by snapping or mouthing back. All our dogs understand the important difference between hands, food and toys....they are taught from puppy hood not to mouth or chew hands in any way. All our dogs will lick peanut butter or ice cream carefully off our hands without so much as an accidental nibble. This is not by accident it is by design. A dog should also allow you to pry any toy from its teeth without resistance or aggression, as our 91 pound pit/lab mix has always done and our puppy Basenji is doing as well.

The person and the dog are playing and here you come along and give this big long thing about what should and not should be done when the dog and person is playing. I don't need you telling me about training and luck when the whole point of me commenting to you is telling you to chill out. We aren't at a dog show and you need to relax your self. Newsflash...THEY ARE PLAYING. If you mistook this video as a form of training, when there was no training indicated in the description of the video, you need help because your level of comprehension is way off. Another newsflash....people train using different methods. Some are quick to work on certain dogs than others. Just because you've owned everything from an ankle-biter to a little pony does NOT make you an expert in the field of training. Nobody cares that you've owned a variety of dogs just like nobody cares about the different dogs I've had throughout my life. As far as puppies nipping or biting a human hand...that's how pups act. It's up to us as humans to deter them from continuing to do it as they grow. And guess what? Dogs ARE like miniature people. Just because they are on a different level of consciousness than humans does not mean they are not like miniature people. They have the same instincts as man does...survival. There are more dogs that are more human than many humans on this planet. And another thing....Phil Sandy is right. You are stuck up because you have this sense of arrogance in your posts that your method of training is the best. If you don't think so, go read some of the other comments and then come back and read yours.

I'm extremely sound sensitive and barks give me migraines, and I remember reading as a kid about these guys not barking. I thought that meant they were completely mute, but this is adorable and a lot more easier on my ears than barking. I think I want him!

It’s weird cause I have 2 basenjis, and neither of them do the baroo, so I think there’s a good chance that you can get one that’s completely mute.

warrior queen This breed of dog has wierd vocal cords which makes them unable to bark in a normal sense. The yodels and Barlow are the noises basenjis make rather than bark. Unless you are getting a basenji these noises won't come from your new puppy. Holly likes to make noises when we are playing or when someone comes into the house.
