Basic 300tdi engine condition checks PART 1 - The Fine Art of Land Rover Defender Overhaul

Before we go ahead and overhaul the engine we need to know what sort of condition it is in. Setting the valve clearances to reduce noise firstly so we can listen to other noises the clattery 140 000 mile diesel engine is creating.
A Relative Compression test is demonstrated in this episode.

I did a pressure compression test on a cold 300Tdi engine. I got more or less the same values down the four cylinders on a dry test. 330psi on cylinder 1; 320psi on #2, 320psi on #3 and finally 310psi on #4. That was the reading on a cold engine.

The last set of readings were 400 plus PSI on the cylinders with engine at running temperature?

Hi Chris, good day. My 300tdi just had a timing belt change. After driving almost 1000ks it developed an intermittent loss of fuel supply while pressing the accelerator. One day the engine just stops while i was driving as if it was out of fuel. Now it doesn't start but still cranks. Does it had to do with the timing belt replacement? Hope you can give me an idea. Thank you

Great video and channel I enjoy watching and very helpful. Just a quick question- done a compression test on my 200 tdi which came up with exactly the same result on cyl 1, 3, 4 which was 28 bar and on cyl 2 its 24.. It is a 20% difference and wondered if that would indicate a problem. It uses no water or oil however it smokes white grey unburnt diesel like smoke at start up so done a compression test when replacing the glow plugs of which 3 were shot but started fine. I think its a valve problem. Havent checked the clearances yet.

hello, i have a 300tdi defender 350.00 km still on the same head ,gearbox, it has timing gears as well ive now found that engine oil is filling with diesel and oil is forced up past the glow plug al though not much. Im thinking that diesel is entering past the oil seal at the diesel pump connected to the front case which has oil for the gears. or the other is that diesel is getting past the rings , any advice would be great thanks

hi, i dont understand how .20 mm can be close to 1/2 of a mm . .20 would be closer to 1/4 of a mm. (.90 is close to 1 mm)
