I just bought a 1968 Chevelle Malibu with a 396 big block as an SS clone. My dad does wrench but growing up i never listened fully to much. I am learning now from him as well as the KZbin community. Good vid. Us old-timers take for granted that people just know this stuff, or that if you don't know you have to get your hands dirty to know it. In order to do this stuff right, you have to know the basics. If you want to become a 4 star Chef, you have to know how to boil an egg. Good stuff for everyone. For example, in my area a "Panhard Bar" is called a "Panner or Tanner Bar". Try Googling that. Even for us that do this stuff, it's good to know what things are really called.

I’m new to this too. I know some basic stuff. This video is much needed I don’t like asking fb either cause you always have some people thinking they can make fun of you or making negative rude comments. What’s wrong with me wanting to learn this stuff too. But I will definitely watch your videos because you actually like explaining and teaching it. I really appreciate your videos please make more when you get a chance. I have a 1972 Chevy C10 with a 350 2 bolt main bored 60 over camel hump heads 480 comp cam roller rockers and 625 street demon. I bought the truck already with engine built I just want to learn more about what I have and or even do more stuff to it and how to maintain it and change things. Thanks so much for videos

This video means so much. I greatly appreciate you doing it. I have been looking for a video that explains how to match up all the components when rebuilding an engine. Example would be what cam do I need to match the crank to match the piston to match the roller rockers. Awwwww, it's not hard if we just had someone to explain it to us.

Love the Channel great video , I’m just a 61 yr old shade tree mechanic , 1 step off using a tree limb to hook a chain to to pull a motor and trans . We used 3 10 ft 4x4 and 410x24 as braces and prayed for no rain , why we never realized we coulda threw a panthers tarp over that A frame and stayed dryer lol . Anyway , never did more then motortrans swaps , shocks basic crap . Have started on a 1956 Chevrolet 150 2 dr wagon . Floor just got here and rockers and my 110v MiG welder lol ( all I got ) . Got ahold of A 40 dollar 350 in a dispense of a poor dead guys stuff , ask about motor All they said was he wouldn’t hav3 saved a junk motor . It was stuck , pb blasted plug holes and uncovered exhaust valves , then pulled intake found small mouse house cleaned all that , didn’t pull heads , but this rebuild has cost me a fortune so far since Dec 2022 . So money is all but gone lol gonna hook to th350 stock and see if after rockers and floors and 3/4 forward side mount kit I bought . If I can put it back on the road by. June 2024 . I’m 61 , fell in love with a car like this when I was 11 yrs old 1973 . Any way , help me remember what my father taught me 4 decades ago. Timing , I know basic dot to dot on cam gear crank gear , but other then tdc and distributor pointing at number one , how do I get it set to the Hotrod recommend 8 deg, not sure if that’s before or after tdc . So please timing , valve adjustment . Deepest basics too . Will message time to time if that’s ok

Really nice explanation. Been around this stuff since a kid early 70 but when you have not had a motor apart in 40 years the basic run down is nice to refresh the brain. Forgot the 4 bolt mains just have 2 on each end.

Love your 307 videos! I just bought a 1968 impala 307 for a street/daily driver S10 on my other channel on here and I’m tearing it down to do a similar build to yours and your build videos are perfect for helping me on my journey as I’m only used to building four and six cylinders that are fuel injected and more modern. When I was in high school in the 70's, I had an Olds Cutlass 350 Rocket 4 barrel and that car ran like crazy. A friend of mine that had a built 69 Chevelle told me that my engine was probably built heavier with a 5 bolt main. I had no idea that he was kidding around. I'm glad I never repeated what he said. That little rascal. If I ever see him again, I'll bring up what he said for a laugh. I would guess the engine was a 4 bolt main because a race driver bought the car specifically for the motor.

Love the videos, very educational. I recently was given a 76 stingray and trying to id the engine. Got the number from back of block but on flat plate on passenger front there is no stamp. Cant tell if block has been shaved or anything as its baby smooth. Guy that gave it to me said its a stroker motor ( 383 ) But want to know more and he said motor was already in car when he got it. Any suggestions ? Doing a frame off restore for my grandson and getting ready to yank motor and trans. Thanks for everything.

The stamp on front pad of block only gives details of original application. If it has been rebuilt or modified that stamp being gone isn’t too big a deal. The block casting number will tell you the block bore size 350,305,307,283 etc. it may also tell you a little more but not much. Without taking engine apart it’s pretty hard to discern any details.

Great video... Just subscribed an looking forward to the knowledge... Have a 94 GMC K1500 Truck with a 5.7.... Runs great but it's got some age not original... Figured I'd rebuild it, be my first actual project... Typical GMC cab corners rusted but it's a truck and used as one... Like to add little to the engine to help it give that little help when towing and or doing recovery at the trails and bad weather you know... So your thoughts on what percentage of building extra might be ?

Just wanted to ask a question about the 307 build you mentioned that when you were looking for pistons you Aluminium pistons but you ended up with cast. So here the question wanted to know if you put the LS piston beside the 307 cast piston you mentioned there was differents between the 2 and it was about the valve reliefs on the LS Pistons. Was there a chance that you could of taken a moto tool 🔧 to the valve relief and ground the valve relief to enlarge it so the valve would clear it enough to make the valve clear the piston. Hope maybe it would work on the next 307 if there is another 1 to build. Also I want to thank you for trying to build the 307. Your engine had a very nice sound. Hopefully when you are done with the rest of build you can Terrorize the streets and the race 🏁 track. I'm going now thanks Ray in Idaho 😎

Hey Ray! So the pistons weren’t very thick near the valve reliefs, I was afraid fly cutting them would go through. I wanted to use forged aluminum pistons so I could put a turbo on it or nitrous. For the power and rpm level that engine has the cast aluminum pistons will be fine. I’ll just have to be careful if I add power. Thanks for watching!!

Anyway I was on line last night and I saw some forged Aluminum pistons under wieseco pistons that had a solid dome on top of them and also they had some that were Halloe. And compression on those were from 10.5 to 10.9 .as well as 11.1 . So here is an Idea only I've seen some used Aluminum pistons out there if a person just kept there eye 👁 open you might get lucky and buy a good used set of pistons that have a solid dome that way it gives you some play room. Just so you know I haven't ever rebuilt an engine I've removed serval engines heads done some front-end work replaced brakes and on I want to rebuild a engine and I thought about the 307 I'd never seen a good build for the 307 I wanted to put it in my 1998 GMC SONOMA with a procharger I think it would give me enough power to walk away most people. @@raystevens687 Yeah, I could have spent more time looking at other options but was in a hurry. You can find older stock style forged 307 pistons on ebay once in a while but theyre heavy and low compression.

Hi I figured you were in a hurry. I was just sharing info with you and know about in a hurry to so can relate to you on that. Oh I wanted to share with you I use to have a 1968 1/2 Chevy Nova myself 2 door it came with a 307 but I took it out and put a 283 it had stock exhaust but some kinda mild cam in it also Edelbrock intake don't remember which intake manifold hi volume oil pump Quadrojet carburetor when I was out and about driving I've had people want to race me they all had 350 chevy in them. And yes I blew there doors off hahaha. Anyway I'm going I do want to your project finished and see how your does when out and about or on the drag strip would be really cool. There’s a good chance that it’s a gm crate motor. Stamp starting with V is usually flint engine plant. The C could be part of a 0? Hard to say without seeing it.

Not really a way to tell. Most block casting numbers came either as a two bolt only or as a 2 or 4 bolt. Nothing on the outside of the block guarantees a 4 bolt unless it’s a 400 block then the casting number can tell you. I think on the 400’s the 509 blocks are 2 bolt and the 511 are 4 bolt but I’m not sure.
