Number 9: don't toss away energy bar and gel wrappers. Put them in a pocket, or under the hem of the leg of your shorts, and dispose of them appropriately and lawfully at your next stop.

No. 9 Not What To Do. Don't pass another cyclist who is stopped by the roadside taking a wheel off or looking at their bike as if there's something wrong: always slow down and confirm with them that they are OK. If they need help, stop.

I started riding at a park and caught a flat. Like the other commenter said I wanted to figure it on my own but a seasoned rider stopped to check on me. I could have done it on my own but never having done it before, I learned some useful tips and most importantly didn't derail my ride by wasting time. Even when I ride in neighborhoods & stop for a water break, people ask if I'm OK.

The lifting weights one is sorta a shame to mention not to do. Cuz I meet so many men and women who refuse to go to the gym. Because they think people will make fun of their lack of muscle, or their weight. And it really hurts to see how dejected they look over it, they want to go but scared.

Love the vids, but sorry, disagree witrh lifting weights in the gym. Having a strong core, and tonned torso helps prevent injury and assists in power transfer to the legs.... Now, I am not saying become Mr Olympia - far from it - but I do recommend getting to the gym and lifting weights. NSAM qualified instructor for 30+ years and avid (hilly) cyclist since there are no flat areas here in Hong Kong... just hills.

Strength training the core, lower back and legs are essential for serious cycling. A strong waist and lower back is the key to enduring long physically demanding rides. Their are many strength building exercises that improve muscle tone and flexibility without adding large amounts of mass that many riders don't feel that they need. There are many benefits to incorporating weights in cycling without adding too much mass. Look at Chippolinni, lots of muscle tone, and a massive strong sprinter.

Many, many cyclists are transfers from other sports and in really good physical condition (esp competitive runners and swimmers). So they do well right away because of having the long hard fought physical fitness levels but don't know the details, mechanics, culture etc peers expect them too; this can happen for people financially and time limited too. Ultimately it leads to quitting when the mocking and social weirdness just doesn't let the racing be fun anymore. Thanks for you message.

Number 9: Be mindful of other cyclists and other road users. Look around before doing any maneuvers. Indicate every turn and stop. A good mindset to have is to imagine that there is always someone faster than you coming from behind to overtake you and you must provide space for them to do so.

1. no underwear under cycling shorts: produces VPL, chafing 2. dont run red lights: always obey road rules, not safe 3. dont eat a lot before a long ride: can cause cramps, not healthy 4. dont lift dumbbells: wastes energy on leg exercises, which are more important 5. dont stand up for too long: sit down, rest your legs 6. dont look down on other cyclists: you were a noob at one point, treat them with respect 7. dont ride with no hands when windy: wind can blow bike, control the bike 8. dont raise your arms too early: wait until its completely over

Core, for stay lower for longer. Leg, for extra sprinting power and if your leg are just extremely weak, it also help with maintaining high speed (that is not a sprint) as the power increase also means your leg stress less under same load. But generally, most people's leg are quite strong enough to ride fast, it's their breathing, energy distributing and lack of Lactaid threashold that hold them back. Arm, if you are track sprinter that need to pull the bar to sprint harder than your body weight.
@connor.launder
@connor.launder 7 жыл бұрын
It can stop damaging muscle imbalances in your upper body which can in turn effect your legs. As a cyclist you spend a lot of time sitting down which can put stress on the back of your shoulders and potentially shorten your pecs. Compound exercises such as deadlift, squats and bench press are useful to stop this happening plus it builds strength as you recruit different muscle fibres than you would do if you were spinning at 90 RPM (much like the GCN video where they tell you to do standing start intervals using a massive gear). If you do something like 3 sets of 5-8 reps of a comfortable weight (not looking to fail on any rep) then you shouldn't get too much heavier but should get stronger. At least thats what I've been lead to believe - I'm not a sports scientist, just a keen cyclist with some rugby background.

Nick Wright's Conscience yes. You'll increase your power output on the bike. Compound is the way to go IMHO. I'd look at Rippetoe on the KZbin

Re: no underwear. I cycle 9 miles to and from work every week day. I don't have 5 pairs of bibshorts for summer, and 5 pairs of tights for winter, nor do I have enough washing to warrant using the washing machine every day. Also I don't want to wear yesterday's shorts if I haven't washed them yet. So, I wear underwear when commuting. Thoughts? I've been doing it for 4 years now and haven't had any issues at all. Don't get me wrong, if I go for a proper ride like a club ride or a lunchtime ride at work, then I don't wear any.

2 pairs of shorts, wash in sink with soap. Won't take longer than 24 hours for 1 pair to dry on a clothes house so you will always have a dry pair. So far my winter shorts have been fine down to -1C using leg warmers. Leg warmers can be washed the same way and take less than 8 hours to dry so you only need one pair.

Certainly one way of doing it...far too lazy to hand wash things though. Haven't had any ill effects from my way of doing it just yet. Whatever works for you though :)

Well on lazy days I just take the shorts off and wash them while I shower. That works just fine too and only adds one minute to my shower time.

If I am not wrong Sir Chris Hoy said, and I quote, "I had to put a lot of work in to get strong and powerful but once you’ve got it, you can maintain it a lot easier. In the later years, I was probably doing two gym sessions a week, which lasted two hours." Well as him I too do weight lift and I love it because it makes me feel nice, makes me look nice from above my 45 years old and give me the edge over ALL my training partners. Including those 30's who don't weight lift. But I didn't know we were an embarrassment to the cycling comnunity. www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/fitness/training/sir-chris-hoys-golden-training-rules-215933#jfBsRQ0dDXmWbU8D.99

I have a fun embellishment of the 'never stand up' dictum. My urologist told me that on the first day of his surgery residency his professor told the residents: "never stand when you can sit; never sit when you can lie down; and don't fuck with the pancreas."

#1 thing not to do: ride side by side on a public and busy road, this goes for pretty anything, if you want cars to be nice and give room when they pass, don't take the piss (applies for cars too)

terry aqualad it’s almost unsafe to NOT run through lights as it helps you ride within the holes in traffic flow. That said, I always slow down to a near stop and survey the intersection carefully.

Rule no. 9 is when you go down a really high hill leading to a road, don't put your feet on. When the light is green, stop the bike with your feet. Going downhill, let yourself go and put feet on back/front frame.
