Basic & Easy How to draw a roof plan in AutoCAD Tutorial - Hip Roof Plan Part 1

In this tutorial I will explain how to draw and draft a hip roof plan. I use AutoCAD to do this, but you can use any 2D drafting package, or even pen or pencil to follow along to how I work out a roof plan.
Roof plans can be confusing, especially when there are many hips and valleys. I plan to do a series of roof plans to explain how to approach and solve complex roof plans.

Hi again Fayaz, I will certainly look towards doing some videos of what you would like to see. I do have an architectural course on my channel that starts off teaching the basics in autocad, then looks at applying those lessons to doing a house. I haven't finished that course as yet, but I think that if you already have some skills with autocad you may find that boring as it is very detailed and aimed towards a total beginner.

its an AutoCAD tutorial on how to draw a roof plan. If i explained nothing to do with AutoCAD then not really an AutoCAD tutorial

Wow. Ok. You really struggle with roofs don't you. You made a very simple process much more complicated. Maybe it's needed for you to understand what's happening. Perhaps you should learn the closed pline extrude at an angle to create a 3d roof and then trace over it. Make your life easier. Me, I use ACA so use the automatic roof creation tool. If you still get Autocad on subs ACA is now part of the package and it will create the roof for you.

How about ... Draw all your corners in 45d. Start with your extremities, the smaller parts of the roof (left and bottom) and fillet the hips. Then draw from those hip mitres straight across and up for your ridge lines until you hit the next hip or valley. Then mitre those two connections. Continue on until all are solved. Perhaps this requires understanding what is happening in 3D with just your plan view and I've always found this easy. The rest of life I find hard but making roofs is easy. I like the copying around of the hips but really, it would have been quicker just to continue drawing the lines at 45d.

Just tried the PLine extrude method and I'm obviously missing something as it only extrudes as high as the first hip but it's fun. I have seen others do it successfully, just never needed it with ACA. Create your perimeter, closed PLINE. Extrude, using Taper option and enter your pitch from 90 (so 25degrees pitch would be 65 taper) and your height should be higher than the highest point so go double your roof height. However, since I'm missing something, search online and find the tutorials that show how it's done. Quite clever idea.
