Hey Josh, For Your Information: as of the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024 (passed in May), BasicMed has been expanded to allow flights of up to 12,500lbs takeoff weight, and up to 7 occupants (changed from 6 occupants/5 passengers). You can read about it in a recent faa press release where it references the new rules. I'm a ppl student working on studying for my written test and came about this reading the FAR. Thanks for the great videos, they help a lot!

I’ve read that in order to qualify for a basic med, you must have been issued a medical certificate in the past. My 1st class medical may take a while before I’m approved and would like to start school now with a basic med. Do you know if that’s possible?
@firepilot1092 жыл бұрын
From FAA website on basic med; If your aircraft has been altered to permit the installation of a 7th seat by an STC, the seat may be removed and the aircraft may be operated under Basic Med provided the removal is recorded in the aircraft’s maintenance records and also on FAA Form 337 (unless the removal instructions were provided as part of the STC).
@FreePilotTraining2 жыл бұрын
This is actually a very good point, and I thought about going into that a little more, but I figured it wasn’t worth it. You are absolutely right, if the airplane has an STC for a 7th seat, and you take it out, that’s fine.

Ever since basic med came around I've always wondered, if I have to go to the doctor to get a special exam to fly under basic med, why not just pop over to the AME and get a regular class 3? The basic med exam seems more involved than any class 3 I've ever had, and it doesn't seem like it's saving me any time or effort. What's the benefit of doing basic med over class 3?

@jldodd Жыл бұрын
A couple of other reasons are there as well. I had to get a special issuance 12 years ago due to a heart arrythmia caused by a car accident that has since resolved. If I were to go for a regular Class III, I have to go through thousands of dollars of non-medically necessary testing every 2 years to keep my Class III and that can take months to complete. Also, it's almost a 2 hour drive to the nearest AME. I mostly fly small aircraft with one passenger. Basic Med saves me quite a bit of money and time.

Soon to be student pilot hopefully. I took my class 3 physical last October 10/26/23 but was differed for 2 issues. The FAA took 7 months to review then asked for additional information. Finally last week they issued my class 3 medical in MedExpress (Still waiting on documentation from FAA) but they only issued it until 10/26/2024. 11 months to complete the process but gave me less than a month once issued before it expires. I’m going to try Basic Med path to see if that can be issued now that the deferrals are cleared. I thought class 3 was supposed to be good for 2 years at my age. Any suggestions?

You can take the online course several times before it is required (2 years after you took it last, or the first time). If you are just taking the course to see the information and understand how it works, don't fill out the form for your doctor when you reach the end of the course. Only do this when you are required to, based on the last time you took it.

Can I exercise my flight instructor certificate when acting as pilot in command (PIC) under BasicMed? “Yes, but the key term here is PIC,” explains Brad Zeigler, FAA Aviation Safety Analyst and contributing expert on the BasicMed Advisory Circular, AC 68-1A. “An individual may only operate under BasicMed when acting as PIC of an aircraft that is covered under BasicMed,” says Zeigler. Basic med is a great thing for the majority of GA pilots that just use it for meetings, family trips, and people who do flight instruction but don't want to keep dealing with FAA doctors. If you are flying most GA planes, you aren't going above 18k feet and you probably won't be flying bigger planes over 6k lbs. Everything else is pretty much the same for the majority of pilots. Just don't fly to Canada.....yet. AOPA is still working hard with Canada to make it a basic med country like Mexico and Bahamas. Good video
