If you want to make a men's large mitten, follow instructions for men's in the written pattern instructions, and then as you knit you may want to add more rounds to the thumb and the hand to make it longer. You can also go up one needle size to make the overall mitten larger.

I turned off several instructional videos midway before finding this one - it's fantastic for beginners.. it's SLOW, it's in real time, the music is not overpowering (as a DPN knitter I can follow) and your voice is clear. I really like the way you explain each step of the knitting. For example I had no idea of how to cast on stitches in the middle of a row, and by following your video, it was so easy. However, I find it much easier to knit on four dp needles rather than three. I am now in the middle of knitting my first mitten ever and so far, I am happy with my progress. And thank you for making the written instructions available to download. ❤

I’ve been a bit intimidated on knitting things in the round. I only made one hat and that was quite a process. I’ve also always been curious how you add the thumb part of a mitten! I was going to just make some fingerless gloves because they seemed easier, but I really wanted mittens because my fingers get cold so I wouldn’t even like the fingerless gloves that much. I’m about a third of the way through 1 mitten and this tutorial is fantastic! It’s perfect for me who has barely done any knitting at all, mostly flat projects. I’m so excited to see how these mittens turn out! Thank you so much for the tutorial video ❤

i finished the right glove and have already started the left one twice and each time for some reason the finish is crooked when i finish all the decreases. I don’t know what I doing wrong! 🙈I did a help. Thank you 🙏🏼
@jacqknits
@jacqknits Жыл бұрын
Oh no. Well here are a couple things to look out for: 1. Be sure you are placing your stitch marker in the right spot before you start you hand decreases. It should be placed exactly half way around your round. 2. Be sure you are doing 4 decrease stitches for each decrease round you are doing. One at the start of the round, one before the stitch marker, one after the stitch marker and one at the end of the round. It is easy to forget one of those, so always count after each decrease round and be sure you have 4 stitches less than the previous round. Also pay attention to where the end of your round is so you don't accidentally do an decrease at the end of a double pointed needle instead of at the end of the full round (I've done that before). 3. Be sure your thumb gusset is in the right place for the left mitten. Follow the instructions for the thumb gusset set up row for the left hand to be sure your gusset is occurring at the end of the round, not the beginning (as it does for the right hand). 4. When you are done with the hand decreases, you may just need to position the mitten around a bit so that the decreases lie flat on the side and the thumb is near the left side. Could it be that simple??? I hope that gives you a few things to try or to double check is correct. Good luck.

Really a clear, paced explanation of how fingers are knitted in gloves. I've only tried finger-less gloves, so far. I wonder if this mitten could be shown using needles in the round? I'm not confident using DPS. 🤔
@jacqknits
@jacqknits Күн бұрын
Thank you. To do mittens in the round without dpns you would need a very small circular needle. Then the problem is with the thumb. You would not be able to knit the thumb in the round with a circular needle. The circumfrence is just too small. You can however use a long circular needle to knit mittens by using the magic loop method. If you are not familiar with that I have a video on how to knit fingerless mittens with the magic loop. The same principle can be used with a full size mitten. See video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGfPqoWOi7V_jNk

I'm pretty much a beginner but this is my standard way to knit mittens. I have found that I need to put caps on my DPNs because I tend to push the stitches off the unused needles. You have to keep putting the caps on and off as you knit around, but for me it's worth it.
@jacqknits
@jacqknits 10 ай бұрын
You may want to check the length of your DPNs. They shouldn't fall off your needles unless you are using some shorter needles. I use a 7 inch needle and for something like this mitten where there is only 12 or so stitches on the needles you shouldn't run into that problem. But nonetheless I'm glad you found a solution for it. Happy knitting!

At the beginning of the video when you are distributing the stitches onto the other needles, you do 10, 10 and 12. For the men’s medium in the pattern with the 40 stitches for the cast on, how should I distribute the stitches for the other needles?
@jacqknits
@jacqknits Жыл бұрын
Hello. It isn’t important to have an exact number of stitches on each needle just as long as they are approximately evenly distributed. I would probably do 14, 14, and 12 for the larger size.

@jacqknits
@jacqknits 11 ай бұрын
I'm glad you enjoyed these mittens. For a men's large I would first try increasing the cast on stitches by another 8, so cast on 48 stitches. You can try that, knit for a few inches and have him try them on while they are still on your needles. If too tight, increase by another 4, too loose, go down to 44. It may be a bit of trial and error at first.

@jacqknits
@jacqknits 24 күн бұрын
The knit and purl stitches for the cuff give it a bit of a stretch which is nice for any cuff. With just knit it won’t have that nice stretchy cuff and it may feel loose and not keep your wrist warm. When you are doing a 1x1 ribbing know that you are always knitting the knit stitches (the column of V looking stitches right below) and you are purling your purl stitches (with the purl bump right below). That may help you keep track.
@Sofia.Hannah

I love your mittens pattern, so easy & adapted to magic loop. My only question is: both children’s and adults patterns have thumb of 11 stitches, is this correct?
@jacqknits
@jacqknits 10 ай бұрын
So yes, the child and the adult small has you working the thumb gusset till there are 11 stitches between the markers. Then when you transfer those 11 stitches to scrap yarn you then cast on a few stitches to continue. For the child mitten, you cast on 3 stitches and for the adult you cast on 5 stitches. So when you go back to work the thumb, the child thumb has a total of 14 stitches you are knitting and the adult has 16. Hope that helps. Thanks for reaching out.

Thanks for your video! Find it super helpful 😌 I am not sure what I did wrong but the inside of my glove looks like your outside. Seem to have done it inside out somehow… also for the thumb I ended up having to pick up 7 stitches instead of 5 because otherwise it had large holes. I’m not sure where I went wrong 😵‍💫
@jacqknits
@jacqknits Жыл бұрын
Hello, thanks for watching. As far as your mitten being inside out ... make sure that when you are knitting with your double pointed needles that the OUTSIDE perimeter of your triangle your needles create is facing you, not the INSIDE. You should be knitting so that the knit stitch (the V's you see in the stitch) ends up on the outside of the triangle. The purl bumps will end up on the inside. Does that make sense? Watch on my video on how my needles are positioned in relation to how I'm knitting. For the holes in the thumb, when you cast on and continue to knit be sure those stitches (the cast on stitches and the stitches already on your needle) are pulled tightly up against each other. Also on the next round when you knit those stitches, be sure you are giving it an extra tug to line them up next to each other. Also, at the end of the video I show how you can close the gap on the little hole that are created at the base of the thumb. Hope that helps. Have fun!

That is an excellent question and one I often ask myself at times as well when looking at a pattern and the yarn/needles I have on hand. If you are a more of an advanced knitter you can probably make your own adjustments by casting on more stitches and making adjustments as you go with the increased number of stitches to accommodate your thinner needles and yarn. But if you are more of a beginner, that may be a bit difficult and I would recommend sticking with the same size needle and yarn as the pattern calls for. Otherwise it may cause a lot of frustration and the wrong size mitten! I wish you the best and happy knitting!!

@jacqknits
@jacqknits 14 күн бұрын
No, for both mittens you will alway do a make one right increase (M1R) right after your first marker and a make one left increase (M1L) right before the second marker. Do not switch them for the other mitten.

I am struggling, how do you get the two tails coming from same end?
@jacqknits
@jacqknits 22 күн бұрын
If you are casting on using the long tail cast on method then you will end up with your tail and your working yarn at the same end. Other types of cast on can result in your working yarn ending up on the opposite end. It really doesn’t matter where your tail is. You still want your working yarn to come off your right hand needle and you will knit your stitches on your left hand needle to join in the round. Does that help??

Yes. You would need to cast on more stitches. I would recommend starting with casting on 44 stitches and see how that fits around your wrist once you have several rounds completed. You would also want to increase the gusset size continuing to do increases every 3rd round until you have like 15 stitched between your markers. You may also need to knit more rounds for the hand,cuff, and thumb. Hope that helps. Thanks for reaching out.

When I look at your needle that has the marker, it has 14 stitches, so are you moving stitches from your 1st an 3 needle on to this needle. The rest of your instructions are very clear, it’s just this part that I am having trouble with but I intend with your help to conquer this (hopefully) ❤ Thank you very much for replying.
@jacqknits
@jacqknits Жыл бұрын
Remember that the total number of stitches on your needles is 34 when you do your decrease set up round, but they are divided amongst 3 needles. It doesn’t matter how many stitches are on each needle just that they are divided between the 3 needles. You place your stitch marker half way around your round (after 17 stitches). That is probably somewhere on your second needle. For your decrease rounds you are doing a decrease stitch at the start of your round (beginning of first needle), before and after your stitch marker (on your second needle), and at the end of the round (the end of the third needle). 4 stitches decreased for each decrease round. I hope that helps.

@jacqknits Жыл бұрын
Hello. Glad you are giving these mittens a try. For the left hand mitten after you have removed the stitches to scrap yarn for the thumb you should knit two more stitches to get to the end of the round. That will be the beginning of the round going forward. After you’ve knitted your rounds for the hand then starting there at that beginning of the round, knit for 17 stitches and place your stitch marker so you know where to do your decreases. You can add a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round but for me I always have that start of the round be at the end of one of the double pointed needles. I hope that helps. I’m sure these are going to turn out great.
@jacqknits
@jacqknits Жыл бұрын
I’m thinking I need to clarify further. After you remove the gusset stitches to scrap yarn AND you cast on 5 stitches then you knit your last 2 stitches of the round and that is the start of the next round. The round start position stays the same throughout the entire mitten. Hope that helps. Thanks for reaching out.

@jacqknits

Because this is such a small circumference to knit you would probably want to use the magic loop method to knit with a circular needle. That way you can use a long circular needle and not have to have such a small length circular needle. In a few weeks I will have a video live on how to do the magic loop method, but in the meantime there are a lot of videos out there showing this technique. It really is a great technique to learn. It’s hard to say exactly as I haven’t yet knitted a test size. But I would think you’d want to increase the number of thumb gusset rounds till you have 15 stitches between the markers. And then I think that casting on just additional 5 stitches will be enough. Also you may want to increase the plain stockinette rounds after the cuff ribbing to 10 to give that a bit more length.

@@violetmackay171 I've been working on a larger size for men, but I'm finding that the larger I make the mitten (more cast on stitches etc.), it becomes grossly oversized. There is not much structural difference between the men's medium size that is in the written pattern than what you would knit for a large men I'm finding. I would try the men's medium size from the pattern and if needed just simply knit more rounds for the thumb and for the hand as needed to make for a taller thumb and hand. You can also just go up a needle size to make the overall mitten larger if needed. I hope that helps.

Hello, thanks for reaching out. If you wanted to do this with a circular needle, I would suggest using the magic loop method to do this as you would need such a small circular needle to do the small circumference of the mitten and the thumb would be difficult. The magic loop allows you to use one long circular needle to knit a small circumference in the round. I will have a video going live on Dec 3 that demonstrates how to do the magic loop and I will also soon be posting some additional videos on knitting mittens with the magic loop. Happy knitting!

I can’t seem to understand the decreasing for the top of the mitt. How many stitches should there be on your needles before you start to decrease? How many on each needle? It looks like your needle with the marker has 14 stitches.
@jacqknits
@jacqknits Жыл бұрын
There are a total of 34 stitches on your round before you start to decrease (remember that those 34 stitches are spread out over 3 needles. It really doesn't matter how many stitches you have on each needle, just be sure that your stitch marker is placed halfway around your round). Your set up round is to knit 17 stitches, place stitch marker, then knit 17 stitches to the end of the round. So your stitch marker will be 17 stitches from the beginning of your round and 17 stitches from the end of the round (somewhere on your 2nd double pointed needle). You decrease 4 stitches with each decrease round. So after the 1st decrease round you will have a total of 30 stitches on your needles, then the next decrease round, you will have 26, etc. When you are done with all your decrease rounds you will have only 10 stitches left total on all three stitches. Here is the written instructions for the decrease rounds: Decrease Rounds: Set Up: K17, PM, K17 Rnd 1: K2tog, K to 3 sts before marker, SSK, K1, SM, K2tog, K to 3 sts to end, SSK, K1 (4 st decrease) Rnd 2: Knit all Rnd 3: Repeat Rnd 1 Rnd 4: Repeat Rnd 2 Rnd 5: Repeat Rnd 1 Rnd 6: Repeat Rnd 2 Rnd 7: Repeat Rnd 1 Rnd 8: Repeat Rnd 1 Rnd 9: Repeat Rnd I hope that makes sense. @jacqknits
@jacqknits Жыл бұрын
Hello. I am so sorry you are having trouble with this pattern. Which size are you making? And are you referring to the number of stitches that are between the markers after completing the gusset? I've just knitted up a swatch to this point and am showing that the stitch count is correct in the pattern indicating there should be 11 (for the small) and 13 (for the large) stitches between the markers after you completed the gusset. You start the gusset by placing two stitch markers with 3 stitches between them. Then with each increase round you are increasing the number of stitches between the gusset by 2, doing one increase after and before each marker. So after one increase round there is 5 and then after 3 more increase rounds for the small size you have 11 stitches between the markers (13 if you are doing the larger size as you are doing one more increase round). You then you will slip those stitches between the markers to scrap yarn and cast on 5 additional stitches. At this point you will have a total of 34 stitches for the small and 42 stitches for the large on your needle. Let me know if I'm not understanding where you are having the difficulty in the pattern.

Yes, that decrease set up row is just to place that stitch marker half way around your round. Thanks for reaching out. That is quite a bit smaller needle, so it would be difficult to make the adjustment on the fly.
